Getting logged out...over and over...

I deleted cookies and cache which enabled me to log in again, but I keep getting logged out. Randomly and annoyingly. There have been times when I can cruise around the site and I'm fine until I want to make a comment and then I have to log in again. Other times I can type the comment, THEN I get logged out, the comment is gone, and I get an error message. Sometimes I come back to the computer and I'm immediately logged out. Sometimes I can cruise around the site for a while, and then I get logged out when I click a new topic or when I go from home to talk or talk to home...there's no rhyme or reason to the logging out, except that it happens often. And randomly.

Will creating a new account solve this? I don't care if I lose my user name and history, but getting logged out over and over is seriously annoying.

If this is something that's still being worked on at SE, I'll be patient.

Yikes. Of course I had to log in to comment, but I only have to do it once each time I come online (I turn my computer off for long stretches of the day.) Also, when I go to log in to comment, the fields for user name and password fill in automatically after a second or two, so although it's a nuisance, I can live with it. I'm not having the trouble you are.

How about creating a new account with a new name, and then you can recover dbcurrie's history when this gets straightened out. In other words, don't reregister as dbcurrie, but as something like akadbcurrie. I think that would let you try out what you want.

Are you on Mozilla? I don't understand why we seem to be having different problems among so many of us.

exact same problem I'm having DB

Yes. Would be nice if we had the option of remaining logged on.

Same problem here. I have to log back on every time I visit the page. I'm on Firefox and I'm navigating through gmail reader if that makes a difference.

Me too!!! and this never happened before?!?!?!

There are 2 different log in issues we've been trying to troubleshoot and resolve this week:

- Logged in, but not able to comment. If you are logged in to SE according to the log in box at the upper right of every page but don't see a comment box on a post, refresh the page and it should appear. This is a temporary workaround.

- Not staying logged in. Up until earlier today, there was a cookie set to expire after 4 hours. We updated it today so it shouldn't expire and are continuing to test to confirm that is the case. To take advantage of the new cookie setting, you will need to clear your cookies and cache once more.

I know it's been a frustrating week for all you regulars, but we will get these issues fixed!

Alaina,
FYI, I was shown as logged in and the comment box was there, but when I tried to post I got this:

Comment Submission Error
Your comment submission failed for the following reasons:

Registration is required.
Return to the original entry.

I logged out and back in so if this post works... thats a temporary solution
=)

@AyeEat The comment submission error is a new bug thanks for reporting it, I'm filing a ticket on it now.

I'm having the same problem. I've created a new account, same thing happens.SOO frustrating.

And the "search" box at the top of the page isn't working as well as it used to either.

I just got the "registration is required" error as well.

Yeah, it sucks. I don't do the Facebook page, I find this venue much more interactive, at least until this week.

I love you so much that I'm going to be patient.
Yes, I'm using Firefox and have to log in every time I stop in for a visit. Inconvenient but not a deal breaker... One day soon Alaina or Adam will pipe in and give us the good news that all is well in SEland and will provide us all with specific instructions on how to resolve our "issues". If this is the biggest crisis in our lives, we should all be giving thanks for our many other blessings.

I thought I had good news this morning, because when I turned the computer on and came to serious eats there was the cheerful little "hello lemonfair!" in the right-hand corner.

But when I posted the comment I wrote here to say so, I got the same submission error that ayeEat gets. That's an entirely new one to me.

Wow. I almost gave up on this one. Took about 5 minutes for the comment page to clear after I submitted the above comment (6:42) It is in fact 6:47now. The bottom read "waiting for ad.doubclick.net," and it also takes 30 seconds or so to get past that line if I open a new tab to serious eats.

I just encountered AyeEat's problem and logged out and then back in which did work.

This is very frustrating; I'm on a Mac, and I've tried Safari, Firefox and Camino browsers, with the same crap every time.

I have Firefox, and up until recently have never had to log in each time I visit the site. So something has changed at SE that we all have to log in anew with each visit. I agree with everyone else that it is quite annoying. Before this, I think I was logged in for more than a year, with many visits!

I think a lot of this was due to the recent "upgrade" of the system that Serious Eats uses. I was able to log on just fine and have stayed logged on since last night. Seems like the old cookies aren't respected the same way anymore. I cleared my cookies and cache and things seem to be normal now.

I remained logged in last night, but could not post comments because site said I needed to register. So I logged out, then back in again.

Still lots of glitches and gremlins to debug with the upgrade. *breathes deeply and chants "patience"*

It only makes us crazy because we love it here so much.

Same error message here... Tried logging off and then back in. If it works, then this will post.

I am wondering about the auto-login... I used to never have to log in, I'd either stay logged in or I would just have the info saved on the site. I have to type it in each time now. Is that something on my end or on the website? It's not happening on any other site I visit.

@gingercookiewithlime-

"Same error message here... Tried logging off and then back in. If it works, then this will post."

Still happening here too. "bout ready to e-mail "Feedback" again.

I've had the same problem(s). Firefox user here.

Looks like the bug is debugged. Thanks, SE.

You'll have to excuse me because I was out of action for about a week but just before I was taken out of action, all the exciting new features here at SE were going into effect.

The chronic need to login, though I didn't delete any cookies, pies, cache or checks (humor me) caused me to quit trying and come back later.

One other thing (in case there's no topic for it) I kept trying to post a new message and it wouldn't "take." Full disclosure, I tried doing this while the upgrade was in progress. My only critique is that the "post new message" should have been marked as "unavailable" if we weren't going to be able to post new messages during the upgrade.

Hello Serious Eaters, thanks for posting about the issues you've seen. The team here at Six Apart is working with Alaina and the Serious Eats team to fix the logout problem some of you have reported, following some recent changes we made to the system. While we're working to get things back to normal, you can try clearing your browser's cache and cookies to help alleviate the problem, as @serious_eater143 did. Please find instructions for doing so in all browsers at this Google page: http://bit.ly/14nO3K

Thanks for your patience while we work.
