eating out -- when was the last time?

It's been ages since I've eaten out.... Maybe it's the economy.... Maybe I'm not restaurant-curious anymore. It's not like I'm in the big apple or a big city. It's kind of a been-there-done-that kind of feeling....

Know what I mean?

My wife and I pick a restaurant we've never been to every weekend and go have dinner there.

I would consider it a hobby of mine.

Sometimes we just aimlessly drive around the city looking for a place that catches our eye, other weekends we'll have a place in mind that someone suggested.

When we find a place we really like we'll go back after a few weeks instead of going to a new place, or if we're going out with friends we'll go to one of those since we know they're good already.

@AyeEat: We're the same way.

Last time we ate out was last night. We have cut down our eat out to ~3 nights per week and 2-3 days per week.

We've dined out only twice in the past month. I understand exactly what you mean. I have high standards and whenever we go out, I'm always disappointed by either the service, the menu or the ambiance. I'm usually happier to stay in.

It usually ends up that we do one quick cheap meal during the week, often Pho, and on the weekend we have a bit of a date night somewhere slightly more upscale. As we become more budget conscious, and more importantly as I become more adventurous in the kitchen, we've been making splurges on ingredients and cooking at home, instead of spending triple or quadruple on the same product at a restaurant. This weekend, for instance I spent $20 on king crab legs (not that they're particularly tough to cook) at the grocery and we'll have that as a treat tonight with taters and a salad and a bottle of wine instead of spending $30 each on king crab entree's out on the town plus another $30-50 on appetizers and wine.

I agree-we have been going out less and cooking more interesting items at home. There is one new restaurant in town that I have been to for dessert and it is so unique inside (it is a small room in an old mill) that I cannot wait to go back. The problem is that I am picky and their menu changes daily so I am waiting (unlike I would normally) till the menu is something I really want. It's quite expensive and I really want to enjoy it.

We go out for dinner maybe two or three times a year (I'm not including stopping at a fast food joint when traveling which is 5-6 times a year). I enjoy cooking, and my husband knows that we can have a luxurious meal at home for a lot less than going out. However, it is nice not to have clean up after a decadent, now I need a nap or a walk meal.

I agree. We've exhausted all the possibilities around our flat in suburbia, and we're at the point where we don't want to spend money unless it's at a restaurant which we feel is worth the cost. As BananaMonkey has stated, we've been leaning more towards spending money on expensive ingredients and expanding our horizons in cooking.

My husband and I go out once every 1 or 2 weeks. It is our way to unwind. A friend owns a killer deli so that's often where we go. We do try some places, but often stick to old standbys so as to not be disappointed.

Did someone say "grilled cheese". :-)

@dmcavanagh--did you just read my husband's mind? Grilled cheese sandwiches and soup always seemed so wholesome--just like a Campbell's ad for a great after school snack. Now, I don't even want to hear the words "grilled cheese sandwich" come out of my 15 year old son's mouth. Is there a Serious Eats therapist available?

My boyfriend and I love to go out. Usually though we go out for things that we can't cook at home. Other than that I feel like I can do just as good if not better than at the restaurant, so it's better to save the money and stay home. That being said, for special occasions we like to go to fine dining restaurants and get not only the great food, but the experience of dining that goes with it.
