Breakfast/Bagel Suggestions in NYC
My girlfriend and I are making my first trip to New York for the Food & Wine event this weekend (specifically, the Pieman's Craft Event) and wanted to hear some suggestions for good breakfast spots in the Midtown/Flatiron/Gramercy Park area (specifically, near W 30th and 5th Ave). We would also love to try some famous New York bagels, so does anyone have any suggestions for good bagels in that area? Thanks!

Hi! Welcome to NY!
I have been living here for a while and I love the classic Bagel and Cream Cheese with Lox sandwich. read on for my recommendations! Hope you and your wife have fun!
First choice: Definitely Ess-a-Bagel which I rave about on my blog!

Second choice: Russ and Daughters on Houston between Orchard and Ludlow (they were feautered on Anthony Bourdain's show!!)
Have fun!

most folks advise tourists to head all the way up to H&H bagels on the upper west side. but as a new yorker, i'd suggest picking up a bagel from the first coffee truck you see! they're just as delicious, w/a little bit of butter or cream cheese. the coffee is also pretty good. you can also find bialys (kind of like scooped out bagels) at most delicatessens, where they can likely toast things up for you as well.
as for breakfast spots, i tend to avoid crowds whenever possible! one of my faves is josie's east (http://www.josiesnyc.com/josie_east/josie_east.html) on 37th and 3rd. but if you're in the mood for a bit of hustle & bustle, the union square farmer's market is iconic. it's open on saturdays, and you can snack on samples of fresh fruit and baked goods. tisserie (http://www.tisserie.com/) is also right nearby if you need something more substantial!

penelopes is a really cute neighborhood place for breakfast/brunch and is right around the corner (either 29th or 30th on lexington avenue, i can't remember). also really close is inoteca (24th st and 3rd avenue). i haven't been to this location (they have two others) but the other two are great.
for bagels, i like murray's, there's one on on 8th avenue in the 20s. h&h (mentioned above) is also good.
....if you're willing to travel a little bit further, i like cookshop (20th and 10th ave) for a big brunch. also jane on houston st has excellent french toast.

@ lil miss new yorker - the tisserie location on the northwest corner of union square closed (sad! i loved going there for lunch) but they still have one in the village.
the coffee cart bagels are usually stale, so i would pass - they're fine, just not food you write home about.
russ & daughters is delicious and amazing, but rather far from 30th and 5th. i've heard good things about penelope's, but haven't been there myself.
brooklyn bagel over on 8th avenue is pretty good, and ess-a-bagel is usually alright (they won't toast your bagels though). for something sweeter, madelaine patisserie on 23rd between 6th and 7th is pretty good too.

A good spot for a decent bagel with schmeer in walking distance to W. 30th/5th is Bagel & Bean. B&B is on the corner of 7th Ave & West 30th. It's a decent bagel shop/deli with a wide variety of bagels and spreads. I was there recently and had a killer whole wheat everything bagel toasted with scallion cream cheese. The better bagel houses (H&H Bagels, Ess-a-Bagel or Times Square Hot Bagels) are all a taxi or subway ride away from were you are staying.
If you have the time, take a stroll down Fifth Ave and make right onto West 18th Street for City Bakery at 3 West 18th St. They have outstanding bakery savories.

Sorry got excited over the bagels, lol ....Bagel Maven is at 7th/West 30th, B&B is up in the West 50s.

Daniel's Bagels at Third Avenue and I think 37th is really good. It flies under the radar but they put out quality bagels. You might also like to try City Bakery at 18th and Fifth for their many delicious pastries (such as the famous pretzel croissant) and hot chocolate.

Seriously, Ess-a-Bagel is just the best...I'm a 4th gen Jewish NYCer, and there's no better...it's the gold standard

You guys are awesome. Thank you so much for all the great suggestions! It's good to know we have plenty of options available to us.

Bagels are like pizza--the fresher they are out of the oven, the better. Once they have been sitting around for awhile they get stale. Go to a bagel "store", where they bake them on the premises. I'm sure that you will have a good experience at any one of the aforementioned bagel bakeries.
Russ & Daughters is some distance from where you are going to be, and they don't even bake their own bagels, but if you are in NYC for a culinary event, you owe it to yourself to visit this establishment. Ask for the "Super Heebster" sandwich. Trust me.

Alias on the LES has a great brunch. If you're looking for something more bagely/Jewy/Traditionally New York, 2nd Avenue Deli is great. The kishka is outrageously delicious

Just wanted to add, you may think NY bagels are impossible to top while you're there, but you may need to drive 7 hours north to find the best bagels. Many people (even some New Yorkers) think Montreal bagels beat New York's in every way.
