Asian Pears

My dad has 2 asian pear trees in his yard and decided to bring over about bucket's worth over to me.

As much as I like these to just snack on them, I'm curious as to whether or not any of you have found other applications for them. I googled the situation and have only found questionably successful pie recipes (crunchy filling issues).

Oh, great! Another Asian topic... [/sarcasm]

I use a lot when I'm making my pseudo-Korean BBQ sauce.
Puree the pears in a blender or a food processor
add garlic paste, soy sauce, honey, sesame oil
marinate sliced short ribs.

The other day I heard about pear-ginger jam. Someone also mentioned pear muffins, which I think would be good with ginger as well. You can sauce them for apple sauce. I bet that with cinnamon "pear sauce" would taste great on pancakes and in yogurt, maybe even on chicken with an ingredient that would give it some heat.

Mmm, pear-ginger jam - sounds intriguing! I would imagine that jelly would be just as easy, too.

I've used asian pears in salads (with fennel or with roasted grapes, walnuts, arugula). Or in sandwiches (with melted cheese, smoked turkey).

I would TOTALLY take those pears off your hands for you :-)

Make a pie. Poach some. Can some. I love the jam suggestion.
Use as you would use an apple or pear. Just a slighty different flavor.

IMHO Asian pears don't do well when cooked (texture issue). but if you do experiment, please report back! I'm curious :-)

I'm crazy about them raw, on their own, but have been contemplating adding them to salad for a few weeks now. I definitely wouldn't cook them, if I were you. The best part is their juicy, crunchy texture!

I'd have a hard time doing anything with them because I'd be too busy eating Asian pears while thinking about how to cook or prepare them differently. They're my favorite snack fruit.

I'd likely just stick to a salad. Roast some striped beets and slice up. Toss together arugula, Gorgonzola, sliced Asian pears, toasted pecans, and the beets. Dress with an apple balsamic vinaigrette.

Poach the Asian pears in white wine. It's delicious and very easy. I've never had a texture problem since I've always used firm, but ripe pears.

This is a great topic! I've never done anything but eat them plain and I'm intrigued to try something else with them. Hub and I adore them.

I have a couple of Asian pear recipes.
