What's Up With All These One Word Answer Postings?

What's going on here? Do y'all not want to post more than 5-10 characters? Or, have our eaters become lazy? This is just BORING! This site is full of foodies with priceless information just needing to be shared.Sorry, you can't do that with a one word answer.
Any thoughts?

50 Comments:

sometimes one word is enough.

Whaddayamean?

PS - You're right.

"logorrhea?"

Spew

Stop the madness now.

Donnie, thank you!

Is there a way to enable some kind of voting system? That way these threads that act like polls (coke v. pepsi) would be a bit simpler to interpret.

Those who read the last one-word post know my thoughts on the matter. :) I'm in full agreement with you, Donnie.

I think some people are desperate to start a topic but don't have anything interesting to talk about.

I think that it's fun. SE has a ncie mix of the serious and the not-so-serious. And frankly, sometimes I don't have the time or the energy or even the input to add much more than a word or two. If you don't care for that type of thread, ignore it and move on to another one that moves you. Those are my two cents, at least.

I am not able to answer a simple little question or offer an opinion without going through a looooong explanation to make my point, especially when talking about food. It took everything in me to not write more than "Coke" for my answer, but somehow, I managed. I did not like it.

I don't like them (this is a serious answer after my snarky one-word post). I find the questions dull, and dragged over already in many previous posts before on this site. Also, they are kind of overly commercial in terms of the Pepsi v. Coke, Miracle Whip v. Mayo debate. I mean, it's one thing to talk about unusual flavors of desserts or recipes for homemade mayo, or even brands of vegan mayo (since that can be hard to find) but these are pretty boring.

I'm painfully shy.... that's why I am not very wordy with my responses.

It's been diagnosed as the 'Twitter' syndrome...People stopped writing letters a long time ago.

If you don't like it, vote with your silence. Every page click is ad revenue for the site--so there is no impetus for the Eds to inhibit people from doing it.

If you find them boring, start a more interesting thread. I am always amazed at how many people register only to complain but don't actually contribute to the discussion or community in other ways.

Why does this always turn into a p*ssing contest over who is truly good enough or interesting enough? It's so childish. The world is bigger than your particular viewpoint.

I was the one who started the Coke v. Pepsi one, and as I said in my posting, I did it because I was truly curious...I really was curious about which was preferred in this group of foodies I have come to know and respect throughout my year of posting and reading. If you don't like it, don't read it. I'm not lazy...I just wanted to do a true poll...a vote...between two things...so a one word answer made sense. It was the first topic I raised in this fashion, and gosh, didn't think there would be so many haters out there.
@btchyfoodie -- "I think some people are desperate to start a topic but don't have anything interesting to talk about." How about you say something interesting?

@juliebugsmama (and all the others who have complained about the backlash) - I have started many interesting topics and left many interesting posts. You have even agreed with several of them. You won't know which ones they are, though, because they are under my other screen name. I opened a new account so I could be honest. When I joined SE several years ago, the site consisted mostly of serious discussions about food. Lately it has devolved into mindless twitter-like chatter that is barely related to food. I would post these sentiments under my other sreen name, but along with the decline in Talk topic quality has come a decline in tolerances for differing opinions. Anyone who doesn't like a topic or disagrees with a post is berated, and often confronted with a "the world is bigger than your opinion" sermon. Guess what? That goes for everyone, not just the dissenters. You have every right in the world to post cheesy, irrelevant topics. You even have the right to think they are interesting. But I have the right to think they suck and to voice my opinion about it.

Was that interesting enough for you?

I'll be honest under my own name. You live up to yours.

I'm with ya juliebugs.

@ btchyfoody: no.

There's been a paradigm shift since FB really caught fire but frankly, I don't see why one really has to affect the other. "I don't buy meat at this butcher anymore because I prefer this produce stand." The two don't have to be mutually exclusive.

I'm a hard core foodie. I come to SE to discuss cooking - serious cooking - whether it's stew, roast chicken, a killer sandwich or a great local eatery someone has discovered. I don't like food communities with "off topic" folders. I do NOT come to SE to talk about Entenmann's pound cake and I know that corn starch cannot be subbed for corn meal.

I don't visit SE as much as I once did, largely because my time is spread thin and this will only snowball as we get into the busier fall and winter seasons. I've mentioned this to SE management and cannot for the life of me figure out why it's not only not being done, but no one has responded to me. Please add e-mail alerts upon responses to topics where I've posted or topics I've started.

I keep visiting SE hoping that the discussion can return to the quality that made me love this site in the first place. I must admit, I was almost lost with the Entenmann's pound cake thing but I'm hoping that was a one time blunder.

And there you have a multi-word answer.

I get why @btcbhyfoody chooses to not use her regular SE alias. She has a point. There seems to be an almost knee-jerk reaction on these boards to squash anyone who doesn't march in lock-step on the current state of SE affairs.

I have been coming to SE for a while, enjoying both the serious and the frivolous, and sometimes tbe downright stupid, because sometimes stupid can be fun. But it seems that over time the boards have become more and more co-opted by the once occasional What's for Dinner? or PB and J or Nay? type of questions into what seems to make up a good amount of these boards now. The palate cleansers have become one of the main courses.

And I think that this is why a lot of people who were regulars here have disappeared. I used to hit SE every single day. This is no longer the case. I stop by once in a while, sometimes finding something great, but more often finding all the reasons I started staying away.

I have to agree with juliebugsmama here. If one feels compelled to adopt a secondary screen name in order to post snark, that smacks of something less than the courage of ones convictions.

If juliebugsmama and Gator Pam's topics are not your cup of [preferred beverage], starting or perpeptuating threads against them does nothing to advance the food-centric conversation.

That said, I'll hush and hopefully we can all return to more savory (or sweet) topics.

how is this thread any better than the one word answer ones?
it's not even about food? just nit-picky whining.
lighten up already people.
i skip posts and threads that don't interest me all the time.
is it so hard to ignore?

@bitchyfoody- HA.... man your too cool for school. I'm gonna take it one step further and go for 3 screen names. That'll have me in the ultra state of cool for sure.

@therealchiffonade- obviously that person did not know if cornstarch could be subbed for cornmeal. thats why they asked the question, so that people like you could answer it. CHILL

I love this site the way it is.....makes me laugh

@happyeats- then dont waste your time posting in increments

:)

I really wish there could be less negativity on this site. It's gotten worse lately with people dropping f-bombs and attacking each other personally and it's very upsetting.

This is supposed to be fun and informative. I'm reminded of high school sometimes. Some kids were afraid to ask a question in class for fear that others would criticize or make them feel inferior - just to boost themselves. Well, you don't get any taller by cutting others down.

We are all at different culinary skill levels and we are all here to share, learn and enjoy. If someone posts something that is not at your level, then good for them for being here! Maybe they'll learn something new.

Wow, you guys are rough. Btchy, Chiff, and Chisai commented about content. Some other people took that as license to make personal attacks. I get having a couple screen names - if you are honest on this site you get flamed. Btchy probably wanted to be able to have serious discussions with the 8 or 9 remaining serious eaters without having the stench of burning flesh attached to his/her "real" screen name. Which brings up another point - unless your birth certificates say things like "yayfood" and "juliebugsmama," none of you are using your real name. They are all fake. Why does it matter if you have 1 or 100? I think I'll go make a second name, too...

I agree with chisai, chiff and btchy, the stupidity level of the talk section has risen to a painful level. My approach is to mostly ignore it, but every once in a while it is satisfying to blast them in the comments.

Uh....yes I'd have to agree with the Professor. First of all....this is a great site, that's why we're here. Perhaps the level of "seriousness" has gone down in the last couple of years. I've only been coming to the site for about a year so I couldn't say.

We're ALL entitled to our opinions. You shouldn't be called out for stating your feelings on a subject. If you think one word posts are silly then please do say so! You should feel a part of a group and if your opinion isn't shared by others you shouldn't be afraid to be cast out and trampled on. I happen to enjoy when people dissent. I'm also a little bitchy too. Nobody's perfect. Wait...apparently some of you think you are.

LOL....see, SOMEBODY is going to take offense to that!

@simon...bravo. Beautifully, albeit painfully put for some. I rarely head over here anymore unless one of the old schoolers posts something of importance (like this thread) on facebook.

Its the same as those annoying **WAY** or **NO WAY** questions (sorry, Pmac)...you can choose to comment or not. Nobody is holding a gun to your head and forcing you to answer. Dont like the content? Go somewhere else. Most of us did. Facebook is where its at.

FYI: You wont EVER find me posting under anything but ChelleyD01 on ANY site that I go to. Mostly because 1. I generally dont give a shit what people say/think about me. 2. I actually look forward to someone challenging me. 3. It makes me all warm and fuzzy inside.

Wow. This thread got quite the reaction!!

.

this is a blog. all we do is talk about pointless food-stuffs.
some are long-winded and some are not.

I tend to be a bit of a formatting-nerd myself.
Like bolds. They're effective :D

Well if someone posts Coke vs Pepsi what else do you want, a book about why, would it make a difference, would the book change people minds because they now see the light as to why they have been drinking the wrong brand all these years? But I see your point on most of the posts with the one word asnwers.

wow. just finished reading the ˆˆˆaboveˆˆˆ posts.
I don't think I would step so far as to go with another SE alias

I enjoy the mindful and the mindless chatter most of the time.
@chisai - I have noticed a "drier" amount of interesting talk-pics lately as well. I don't visit as much as I used to. But I still heat you seriousEats!

One of the many things I treasure about Serious Eats is that it accommodates a wide range of viewpoints. We are in a very real and meaningful way a community of food lovers. So the talk topics started by serious eaters will be a reflection of the community's diverse, inclusive, and hopefully welcoming points of view. That means that talk topics can and will be alternately light-hearted and substantial, funny and serious. Moreover, those same talk topics will sometimes require comments or responses that range in length from one word to multiple paragraphs. It seems to me that there are so many conversations going on on Serious Eats at any one time that our community members can always find a way to participate or not as is their wont. And I for one think that's something to be proud of.

I am new here and just love SE, yes, some threads are boring so I just skim over them.

On the subject of more than one name, it makes it more interesting to talk to yourself. :o)

We are a world driven by the grammatical constraints of Twitter! Fewer words the better.

Oy!

Well. I go away for a few days and I come home to this. Kids! I love the truly 'foodie' threads and am entertained by the not so intellectual ones and often engage in commenting on both sides. Ed is right that this should be an open forum for both. I don't like the snarkiness or judgemental comments, but in a world with all kinds of people this is what you encounter and I imagine that at facebook it will evolve with the same. If you don't like the thread pass on by. Those threads often don't get a lot of activity. If they do it is of interest to someone. I love Anthony Bourdain, Iron Chef, Alton Brown, Paula and so on. I have a lot to learn and have done so through these folks and from a lot of you as well. (My last post on sweet tea netted me success in good iced tea. What more could I want?) I have a very complicated and difficult life and I come here for fun. Most of the time I get it. This nasty thread was another disappointment. @GranFan we should have lunch:-)

well said Ed: I believe majority of us agree and are Seriously Greatful for the community!

Excessive pride! :D

@janaatwg--- This WAS NOT meant to be a "nasty thread". I was curious as to how other SE'Rs felt about the recent, shall we call them, the twittering on the site?

I also, have not been here for a lil while. Things just got too nasty.

This is a GREAT site, one of the few a 10 year old used to be able to go on and gain insight, as well as foodie education.

That's really what my post was about.

I just started on this site because I was getting bored with another popular food blog, unfortunately for the same reasons you are all unhappy about here. I am looking for plenty of new content to enjoy each day and comment about, the caliber & quantity of food discussion to educate me or questions about food prep, baking, etc, that I could share some info and offer help to those posing questions or trying to learn.
