What's the best cheap mexican restaurant in Manhattan?
I been to the Red Hook ball fields many times and have even made the trek out to Sunset Park for some proper Mexican food but that's just a bit too time consuming for me. Can I get some opinions on the best cheap Mexican restaurants in the city? And don't even think about saying Fresco Tortilla!

If you ever get out of the city come up to Mt. Kisco and eat at Azteca. It's a market with a restaurant on the side. Everything on the menu is good. Come on, just get on the train. It's a short walk from the station.

The amount of offal in Tehuitzingo's menu makes me optimisitic about it, SecondsPlease. I usually refrain from Mexican food until I visit California.
Thanks for the tip!

Grand Burrito, SW corner of 23rd St/6th Ave. Open 24/7. Awesome mexican, incl. beef tongue. They offer tacos, huraches, tortas, etc. Very tasty and nothing like the 'chain' mexican junk. It's open 24/7 too....

Anyone know a good place between 14th and Canal? (And please don't say Pinche, which is really overrated)

I may catch some heat for this, but I like Lupe's on 6th Ave and Watts a lot. It's pretty bare bones Mexican, but from what I've heard, fairly authentic. Super cheap too - but cash only.

Between 14th and Canal, there is nothing better than Zaragoza, on Ave. A between 13th and 14th. Can't go wrong with 3 Tacos and a Modelo Especial tallboy, or the Mexican flag decorated burritos. If they have beef tongue, don't skip it.

I second Downtown Bakery, my favorite quick Mexican food in the city actually:

Benny's Burrito an oldtime favorite. Yola in Williamsburg. And maybe not cheap but sooo Delicious Mexicana Mama on Hudson Street in the WV (their Mole Tacos are too die for).

I put in a third vote for Downtown Bakery. Hands down my favorite.

Tehuitzingo is the best, in my opinion. I miss the days of living right up the block and eating there 3-4 times a week. The suadero, lengua and carnitas tacos are my favorite, and much better then most of the other tacos I've had in NY. Zaragoza is also very good, as well as Taco Mix on 116th

Taqueria y Fonda la Mexicana -- Amsterdam btw 107 and 108. Closest I've had to the Mexican in Houston.

El Paso Taqueria on Lex & 104th street. Best I've had since we moved from SF.

Yeah, I'll second the Taqueria y Fonda -- haven't tried the others people mention, but it's cheap, it's very friendly, and the tacos and main dishes in particular are excellent.
