Surprising Comfort Foods

so with all the stress of college and projects, there is one thing i have found on campus that once i take a bite of it, i instantly feel better, no matter what is going on. its not what i would normally really consider comfort food, but it works for me. it is a smoked turkey & brie wrap, on a spinach tortilla, with warm turkey and hot melty brie, with cranberry mayo that adds the perfect amount of sweetness. its probably one of my favorite things to eat. so, whats an odd comfort food of yours?

42 Comments:

A bowl of plain rice crispies or cheerios with soymilk on top, preferably vanilla. Instant relaxation for me.

Not sure if this is odd perse but after a stressful night where I didn't eat dinner until 10:30 at night, I decided to treat myself to Buffalo Wild Wings. I hadn't had it in forever and during stressful times, the boneless wings and buffalo chips are very comforting (and very unhealthy) :)

One of my strange comfort foods is cottage cheese and peaches. I just love it :)

white toast with salted butter if i'm feeling like something warm or watermelon if i want something refreshing. either one works for me though!

Cheetos. Once on a trip to Italy I had a migraine and my boyfriend found me the Italian equivalent in a small town in the Alps. I married him.

@listener, I don't have a "go to" comfort food, per sec - but, gee, has college campus food ever changed since my day - smoked turkey & brie on a spinach tortilla, with cranberry mayo - WOW!

@bareneed - yeah this place is small and tiny and hidden in the back of our student center. but its amazing. the rest of campus is the greasy fake fast food you would expect. i eat at this little place w the wraps probably every day lol

A piece of whole wheat bread, not homemade, the commercial stuff that's soft and sweet; spread with Skippy peanut butter (creamy) and folded over.

raw broccoli and Hidden Valley Ranch dip. Not because it's particularly good, but because my Nana always put that out for snacking on Sunday afternoons. Tasting it makes all the big scary go away.

I've found that Beef Guinness over Colcannon does the trick too - I think it's as much for the being able to take the time to relax and cook it as it is for the taste.

As I mentioned in the other recent post, fried egg sandwiches -- over medium with the yolk just set, with salt and pepper, on a croissant. For college, I also studied a lot with a bowl of canned whole kernel corn - warmed up in the microwave - with a pat of margarine (no butter, since family wouldn't have it in the house).

Great story @kpope!

Chocolate chip cookie dough is my comfort food. Not cookie dough ice cream. No, no. Just plain old cookie dough, preferably homemade, however, despite the lengths I go to to avoid chemical-laden foods, I could eat that stuff straight out of the tube with a spoon.

Fortunately I don't get stressed out too often.

Honestly, as stupid as it sounds, sometimes just some egg noodles, chives, butter and a good amount of sea or kosher salt does it for me.

-pie (any variety, especially coconut cream)
-rice pudding
-buttered egg noodles with a little bit of salt and pepper
-cinnamon graham crackers

@dhorst--that doesn't sound stupid at all :)

a big bowl of mom's tonjiru (pork & root vegetable miso soup) makes everything better.

Ditto @BananaMonkey. That doesn't sound stupid at all dhorst (and further, gingercookieiwthlime). I remember making plain macaroni with butter, salt and pepper when I was a kid and it's still comforting to this day.

Really mine is soup, though, like pho or ramen, but that's not weird at all.

cottage cheese and fritos. I dont know why, but eating cottage cheese makes me feel productive.

canned corn

Rice with butter.

smoked oysters. especially if someone else would take care of rinsing out and recycling the can.

oatmeal with peanut butter and banana stirred in

Macaroni and cheese, With little bits of bacon and leeks. Yummeh.

Spaghettini with butter, romano cheese and black pepper. Not necessarily surprising, but if eaten in massive quantities leads to the food coma which then leads to a nap which leads to relaxation.

potato chips (sigh). Rice with butter and garlic. toast with peanut butter and sliced banana. noodles with cream and cheese melted in.

My mom makes the best Roman-style broccoli (white wine, olive oil, lots of garlic), and I find that really soothing, even if mine isn't nearly as good as hers. On a bad day, I'll eat a big bowl of it with buttered orzo.

More typical stuff, too, though: chicken tenders (God, I love fake chicken now that I'm no longer a vegetarian), apple pie, warm vanilla pudding with melty chocolate chips, anything involving melted cheese.

@dbcurrie -- I am so with you on the rice with butter. So simple and comforting. I also love a big bowl of hot rice with a fried egg on top.

If I'm really, really stressed out, I need starch -- nothing says comfort like a big bowl of pasta coated with real butter and lots and lots of parm. And a big glass of wine to go with it.

Chicken tenders and fries, big bag of munchies , croissants with butter, and vanilla ice-cream with the "just bunches" cereal mixed in cold stone creamery style lol i'm such a pig

soups
grilled cheese
buttered noodles

either white toast or an english muffin with butter and homemade strawberry jelly, and a cup of lipton tea. my mother made it for me all the time, mostly for breakfast, but also if I was sick. if it's toast, it has to be cut on the diagonal.

Cheese enchiladas
Whole wheat toast with butter and orange marmalade

My wife likes condensed cream of chicken soup (just barely diluted) mixed with curry powder and served over white rice...add spinach and all is well with the world.

Pasta with olive oil, parm and s&p
Rice with fried eggs on top
Leftover fried chicken

cute topic listener.
comfort foods keep me sane. many of them are "typical" comfort foods.
some non-original comfort foods for me are:

Tomato-based pastas:
I'm not Italian. At all. In fact: I have German roots. But for some strange reason Big Bowls of Pasta with tomatoes puts a smile on my face to replace a grin.

Cousous made with V8:
I recently discovered this technique. I water down a bit of V8 instead of just using water to make the couscous. I find this odd but highly satisfying.

My ex's mom's stew:
I love her still. She was a good cook but never blew my mind with any of her recipes except her plain old beef stew with home made biscuits. This surprises me because a) I've had lots of pheonomal stews and b) she's not the most "creative" cook

hot cornbread crumbled into a cold glass of sweet milk - if I'm feeling frisky I might cut up some Vildalia onions and toss them in.

Cream of wheat - warm and soothing to the soul

i agree w everyone about the buttered noodles. pasta of any kind is always a comfort food to me

my nana's mashed potatoes and gravy. mmmm.

shrimp n grits

A mess consisting of stuffing, mashed potatos, chunks of turkey, corn, green beans, sweet potatos (if any) and a mass amount of gravy with cheddar cheese heated up then poured on top of dinner rolls spread with mayo. To make the finale, cranberry, raspberry or strawberry preserve. Either that or Dick Drive In cheese burger.

animal crackers

Also, when I was in grad school and feeling particularly down, I'd get a chicken quesadilla and chicken supreme soft taco from Taco Bell, then I'd run next door to Blockbuster and get two DVDs, then take my goodies home and veg for a few hours.

Now that I'm on chemo, when my stomach is not too upset after my treatments, I'll grab some animal crackers from the cancer center stash, stop by Taco Bell on my way home, and eat my goodies on the floor in front of the TV. It makes me feel just as happy as it did in grad school!

Hardly surprising, but if time permits, kugel. For a quick snack, a tin of smoked kippers on crackers.

Rice with soy sauce and butter. Fried dumplings, although now I can;t eat them anymore. Toasted bagel with butter and honey roasted peanut butter, another thing I can't eat. Pho. Chicken broth.

Cornbread or biscuits broken into a big bowl of buttermilk.

Noodles swimming in butter--has to be real butter
Kraft Dinner--the original, not the upscaled offerings

And if I'm sick:
Scallopped Apples--Stouffer's now calls them Harvest Apples, but it's the same thing
Wonton Soup--take-out, not from a can...and as long as I've stopped for take-out, fried dumplings
Frozen Crushed Pineapple/Whipped Cream and Sliced Marshmallow Dessert--my mother used to make this and when it was so perfect when I was stuck in bed...alas, when you're sick and on your own, it's too much effort to make anything!
