I understand most men prefer a grilled cheese to most anything.

The first things that popped into my head were bananas, ice cream in a cone, and popsicles. :o
Cassaendra at 12:32PM on 09/30/09
Chocolate covered strawberries-- which leads to chocolate covered anything...
joylissa at 12:47PM on 09/30/09
I think fondue is sexy...esp the cheese fondue. Dripping wet cheese on bread that you feed to your partner, then chocolate fondue for dessert. Nuff Said.
Also, I think melons are pretty sexy. Soft juicy melons are sexy and delicious.
Bananamonkey is right though...nothing holds a candle to a really great grilled cheese sandwich. ;)

Grilling shell fish and fresh corn. Some oysters, clams, some shrimp. Best time is as the sun is going down.
redfish at 12:53PM on 09/30/09
hotdogs ;)
AnnieNT at 1:09PM on 09/30/09
Grilled cheese again? Didn't we just have that? Drool.
I'm with the chocolate lovers on this one.
betteirene at 1:17PM on 09/30/09
@BananaMonkey: I WISH my boyfriend liked grilled cheese as much as I do!!
Agreed on the chocolate covered anything. But for dinner, I like spaghetti/angel hair pasta with any kind of sauce. Spaghetti with clams and butter...yum. I am more of a romantic, so the " Lady and the Tramp" approach to dates is up my alley.
And don't forget good wine ;)

I can no longer talk about grilled cheese without thinking about something else. thanks SE.
hmw0029 at 1:38PM on 09/30/09
Yea...I think the grilled cheese flew over some of your heads. : )
arm1970 at 1:56PM on 09/30/09

That my friends, is what I call a keeper.... and a damned fine first date!
Pavlov at 1:58PM on 09/30/09

I dislike when threads become exclusionary--I should have posted this with my original comment. For those not in the know- the in-joke is about this thread. http://www.seriouseats.com/talk/2009/07/grilled-cheese.html
Grilled cheese became a euphemism for something that should never EVER be described as 'cheesy'.
I wasn't even in on that thread and it still makes me laugh to think about it.

you guys are fantastic!
Thanks for all the ideas.
@hmw: those were entertaining. and helpful.
The new guy has identified a love for risotto, so after careful consideration, I'm gonna break out the big guns and choose a combination of his and my favorite ingredients, and... well, hopefully it will be a lovely play-in-the-kitchen-date.
emilytaylor at 5:18PM on 09/30/09
Go se a nice butcher and ask him for a 1 1/4 " thick rib eye.....butterflied.....when open it will resemble the shape of a heart....season an grill it to your liking......stream some broccoli and serve with hollandaise sauce....along with the risotto he likes. For dessert, get a 4 or 5" heart shaped pan ,line it with saran wrap and fill it with vanilla ice cream.Freeze till firm. When you're ready for dessert, unmold the heart shape ice cream onto a nice plate and drizzle it with some raspberry sauce.Asti-spumante also helps, along with low lights and romantic music.

I love it when my husband and I get to cook alone in our kitchen on a weekend evening. That is always a sensual/sexy evening no matter what the menu. Problem is my grandchildren and daughter live with us. Would someone take them for an overnight? :-)
janaatwg at 5:58PM on 09/30/09
Rump of anything, breast of anything, leg of anything, hotdogs, cucumbers, clams, oysters, ......need I say more :-)
dmcavanagh at 6:51PM on 09/30/09
Hi Emily,
Thanks much for posting the original article b/c I too kinda felt left out of the grilled cheese in-joke. Was the joke obvious or am I missing something...not sure, kinda slow on the uptake.
My husband loves homemade chicken soup. Not particularly sexy food...but after he eats it, he feels great. BTW, I love to hear him tell me, "Thanks for a wonderful dinner," when he has enjoyed it. I am not the best cook by far, but he says it often enough. So, in addition to sexy foods, I would like to add feel good words.

Rent the movie Tom Jones
simplejew at 7:23PM on 09/30/09
the sexiest food is any food eaten OFF the person...
Italiancupcake at 8:23PM on 09/30/09
@italiancupcake -- I draw the line at sushi. That's just wrong.
Crème brûlée is an absolute winner.
avaryne at 8:33AM on 10/01/09
whipped cream...as italiancupcake suggests.
everyone here loves food ;
and we can safely assume we all love sex.
why not combine them!!!???!!! AT THE SAME TIME!
über fun overload
hungrychristel at 12:51PM on 10/01/09
You could pull the George Costanza and bring a pastrami sandwich to bed, and sneak from under the covers to get a bite.
funkopolis at 1:34PM on 10/01/09
One of my favorite dates with my boyfriend was when we made our own sushi together! It was awesome and romantic but of course we're both huge sushi fans so that helped.

Having some, ummm...experience in this area...and going back to the "grilled cheese" reference...some foods that go particular well with "grilled cheese" (especially if you are anticipating/hoping for grilled cheese) are:
almonds, apples, chocolate, avocado, cheese, cinnamon, cardamom, lemon, peppermint and pineapple. Especially pineapple.
Things that do NOT go well with "grilled cheese" (should not be eaten before consuming a "grilled cheese") are:
asparagus, onion, garlic or curry
Just trust me on this and you'll enjoy MANY more grilled cheese sandwiches...
