San Francisco: What to do and see on a college budget?

My friends are visiting me tomorrow and we will be hanging out maybe in the city, and staying probably in Berkeley for the night. We're all college students, and just looking to hang out and have fun.

Where should we go have fun? AND What should we do for food?

PS. its been warm in the bay. keep that in mind please thanks!!! =]

I can't be specific as to the street name, but on my last visit to SF hubby and I strolled around Chinatown and down one particularly interesting little allyway was a storefront selling fresh (and I mean really, fresh -- they were making them right there) fortune cookies. A big bag of still warm cookies, unfolded, was really cheap and incredibly scrumptious! We didn't even care that there were no fortunes in them yet.

A fun budget night could include a rock show at Rickshaw Stop, Bottom Of The Hill, or Hemlock Tavern (the latter is also just a fun bar). If you can beat the crowds, House of Nankeen in SF for genius Chinese food is a classic for a reason. If you want a true weird new-agey Bay Area experience, go to Café Gratitude in Berkeley for admittedly delicious mostly-raw food served in an over-the-top environment (their key lime pie is amazing). Brunch at Boogaloo in SF is really tasty but can get super-crowded on weekends (go early). Also if you are a music lover, don't miss a stop at Aquarius Records, one of the best shops on the planet. Great coffee around there as well. Good luck!

If you're all drinking age, there's a sake factory in Berkeley, easily reachable by bus. It's free admission to the tasting room and museum, and $5 for your choice of a 5-course tasting with an excellently knowledgable employee. For as much sake as we drink, it was the first time we really were educated about it, and ended up liking the sake so much that we bought some (super inexpensive) great sake to take home. Takara Sake

The Avedon/O'Keefe/Adams exhibits at MoMA were awesome, $9 student general admission + $5 for both exhibits.

Another favorite spot is the Elbo Room on Valencia, with an essentially $3 happy hour every day until 9 and a decent selection of arcade games!

i was about to recommend chinatown too, but for the dimsum.
i never go to san fran without having it.

Pay for a one-day pass ($11) to use on all the public transportation (except BART). http://www.sfmta.com/cms/mfares/passports.htm

Walk around the Mission (specifically, down Valencia St from 16th-ish to 24th). Go to Taqueria Cancun (Mission & 19th), El Toro (Valencia & 17th), or Pancho Villa (16th & Valencia) for a delicious, cheap burrito. Or, from downtown (Powell and Market) take a cable car (this is a LOT more fun than it sounds) and get off at Chinatown. Walk through Chinatown to North Beach. In North Beach, go to City Lights books to browse (if that's your thing), Vesuvio for a beer, Cafe Greco or Cafe Trieste for a coffee or cappucino. Walk back down to the Embarcadero and go to the Ferry Building, where you will have umpteen choices for a delicious lunch or snack. Or, take the bus to the Haight and walk around. There are a lot of funky shops and interesting people watching to say that least. Amoeba is a great music shop at the end of Haight St. Walk into Golden Gate park and go the to DeYoung, Asian Art, or Academy of Sciences museums. Or, just hang out and people watch.

Most of all, just absorb it...SF is a great place and just being out and about is amazing.

Bring your student ID, there's often a discount for students regardless of age.
