Perfect cocktail for a BLT?
We're having a BLT gathering this weekend, inspired by Ruhlman's site. Local CSA bacon, our own lettuce, tomatoes, mayo and bread. We'll have beer, iced tea and side dishes... but what would be a good end-of-summer cocktail to have with the meal, (preferably one I can make before guests arrive)? It'll still be warm here in CA.
Looking forward to any ideas! Thanks -

A gin-n-tonic would of course go well--crisp, spritely in the mouth, dry--all complimentary to a good BLT, I think. And to a warm, end-of-summer California gathering.

i recently had a white peach sangria that was pretty refreshing
(and i generally hate white wine/poofy stuff)
just white zin, peach schnapps, pineapple juice, lemon-lime pop over ice with freah fruit.

I like my BLTs with a vanilla Coke for that soda fountain/diner experience (because that is where I ate BLTs until I lived on my own -- my mother did not like the smell of bacon hanging around the house). How about a riff on those?
You could do Cokes mixed with vanilla vodka or with Xanath, which is a Mexican vanilla liqueur that is great in cola. Either one of those is super easy and you can accomodate the calorie counters with diet.
You even could upgrade to a premium cola (maybe from Jones or a local producer) or switch the cola out for root beer. You could even go all out and make some upscale alcoholic root beer floats (root beer, vanilla vodka, homemade vanilla bean ice cream with crystallized ginger) that wiould be a big hit!

Beer always goes with Bacon. But I love that you want to be creative!
Since you'd like to go seasonal: I believe it's citrus season, right!!!??
I'm partial to grapefruit so here's one for a Seabreezed
- 1 oz Absolute Citron
- 1/2 oz Absolute Mandarin
- 3/4 fill with Fresh Grapefruit juice
Top with Soda. It's refreshing, tart, and deeelish!
Fresh squeezed OJ on hand?
- 1 oz Peach Schnapps
- 1/2 oz Malibu
Fill with OJ and top with seasonal berry puree
I hope you have fun! Best of luck :)

I like the idea Mizbee threw out there. If you don't go for vanilla how about just rum and coke?? Or how about a vodka milkshake:
2oz. vodka
8 oz. milk
1/2 tablespoon cocoa powder or a few squirts chocolate syrup.
Put in a blender. This is for 1 drink. Serve with a straw.

OH MAN! @happyeats: I retract. A bloody mary or Canadian caesar would be perfect. Try it with the new "tomato" vodka!
hungrychristel at 1:08PM on 09/17/09
I was going to suggest a Bloody Mary too but that might be a tomato overkill. I'm going to suggest a Pimm's Cup with a cucumber stick swizzle.

A Bloody Mary might be too much tomato. I like the summery feel of iced tea. How about Firefly sweet tea vodka mixed with lemonade?
heelsonbricks at 2:37PM on 09/17/09
I think heelsonbricks is on the right track. Say goodbye to summer with BLT's and a hard lemonade. Couple of different ways to go with this: try limoncello and soda water over ice, if you or guests prefer it sweeter add a splash of simple syrup or sprite; the other way is to go with citron vodka, triple sec, fresh squeezed lemon, simple syrup, all over ice, topped with soda water; either way garnish with mint and lemon twist.

oh I meant to say, you can serve them as highballs or in martini glasses if you're into that sort of thing.
wookie at 2:50PM on 09/17/09
Wow! Thanks for the huge variety of ideas! Now the hard part will be to choose. :) We have a little homemade limoncello left from our lemon tree but not enough to go around...

i like the idea of gin and tonic or soda. Somethign about the gin will cut the richness of the bacon and maybe cleanse the palate for the next bite?
I love caesars and bloody mary's but I don't think you want something else tomato-y and salty competing with your beautiful bacon.
BananaMonkey at 5:07PM on 09/17/09
A nice dry hard cider would be rather nice.
AnnieNT at 5:38PM on 09/17/09
Bloody Mary :)
I will have a BLT and BM in the morning and let you know if it is too much tomato.
:)
happyeats at 8:43PM on 09/17/09
Gin and tonic was my first thought, though with a sangria would be nice, too, and much easier to make in bulk. I love Bloody Marys but not with food since they practically are food themselves.
RegrettableFoodie at 9:26PM on 09/17/09
ooooh cider! good call Annie T, woudl work well with the bacon
BananaMonkey at 11:41AM on 09/18/09
OK... the verdict is in. Bloody Marys DO go good with a BLT. I think I will have it for breakfast tomorrow again.
:P
happy

Hendricks and Gin... that cucumber back note would go well with the tomato and mayo on the sandwich.
plazmaorb at 2:40PM on 09/25/09
If you are going to have hard cider... i would mix in a shot of Irish Whiskey into a glass of cider. Give it that extra kick and let that smokey petey taste from the whiskey play off the smokiness of the bacon.
plazmaorb at 2:45PM on 09/25/09
This month's Food and Wine had an article asking just this question. ie: what is the "bacon" of wine. Or rather, what wine goes with bacon. I think the answer was a merlot but it's Friday afternoon and I can't be counted on for accuracies. Check out the issue. It's in there.
porkydickens at 4:00PM on 09/25/09
I would rather have a spicy syrah with some bacon over a limp merlot.
Even a nice Spanish Monastrell would be good, cause its fruity and earthy if you are talking about wines.
