NY Steakhouse (not Keens or Lugers) Suggestions

Hi Everyone

I will be taking a client to dinner on Sunday night and they have never been to NY before. I have already been to both Keens and Lugers and would like to try something different but would like the same standard as the above.

Went to the Palm and was very very disappointed.

Any suggestions would be most welcomed!

Michael Lomonaco over at Porter House is amazing

Disappointed at the Palm? How so? It's my favorite steak house.

Wolfgangs Steakhouse.

Strip House. Very cool, burlesque atmosphere. Depending on the sensitivity of your client, be aware that there are some (classy) nudie pics on the walls. The steaks are amazing. http://www.striphouse.com/

Why no Peter Luger's? Why mess with the best!

Strip House definitely. or wolfgangs.

Depending on what you want to show your client.

A new york staple of steak restrs:

Smith & Wollensky's
Sparks
Mortons

Of the three, S&W's is the better over all. Sparks does great seafood, mediocre steaks, Mortons is ok...

If you want just a steakhouse, not necessarily a new york thing..

Del Frisco's -> was one of my favorites when they first opened up, now still pretty good, but not tremendous, the crab cakes here are one of the best in the city imo
PostHouse -> Old style steakhouse, very good ambience and steaks, awesome cajun rib eye, heavy on the spice, but the meat flavor still was able to shine
PrimeHouse -> more modern steakhouse, very good aged rib eye

Other decent steakhouses:

Porterhouse in Timewarner Center @Columbus Circle
Ben Benson's -> old school steakhouse
Ruth Chris
Rosie Ogrady's
Gallaghers
Palm (there are multiple locations, and each one varies in quality)
BLT Prime
Striphouse

As a side note, I've been to every restaurant listed above(some multiple times), and I only order the rib eye medium rare...that's what I use as a comparison of steakhouses.

IMO, they are within range of similar quality, given that sometimes even the best restaurant can have an off day.

The only place I would recommend NOT going is Dylan Prime. That place was HORRIBLE when I went. The steak was so bad I had to ask the waiter if it was a prime cut or a choice cut, and sadly, the waiter DID NOT KNOW and had to ask the chef.

i haven't been to the palm in ages..... it's now a chain isn't it? i loved the original one on second and 44th.... the speakeasy. always had a superb meal there.... it would be a terrible shame if it's not that great anymore.... any comments on this one?

I love Del Frisco's, and I agree that they have the best crab cakes!

Strip House if my fav! Get the potatoes romanoff and the creamed corn with pancetta as sides. And don't forget the stilton sauce. :)

I have to agree on Del Frisco's with all the previous comments mentioned about the place. Make sure when you make reseverations you ask for the Mezzanine. The ground floor is too loud for a business dinner. Be sure to have the Del's delight. It's a hidden dessert and not on their menu. Think Milkshake mixed with alcohol. Out of my more than dozen visits I've only had one off steak.

I wasn't overly impressed with the steaks at Smith and Wollensky's the few times I've been there but the service is almost akin to Lugers. Think old guys serving you.

Morton's was at best average but not a bad place for a business dinner.

I've enjoyed quality meats on 58th street and Porterhouse on Colombus nearby is nice.

If you are downtown in the financial district there's always Bobby Van's (average but not bad considering it's a chain) and Capital Grille. The Capital Grill isn't open but will be next week. (unfortunately after your dinner) If it's anything like the midtown one then it's a good choice for the downtown area.

For some reason I always find myself going to Del Frisco's though. In any case, let us know how it worked out and how good the place you chose is.

For some reason I always

I'm partial to Strip House and BLT Prime. I would avoid Bobby Van's though.

Thanks for all the suggestions - this site is so helpful!

Hope this helps, I'm a chef and love steakhouses, Ive been to all the major ones, here's a little post I've written;

1. Del Frisco’s; Great steak, boneless prime dry-aged ribeye. Caesar salad is very good, sides are all good. The dining room is very comfortable and beautiful, and it’s always very lively. This is my first choice for a steakhouse.

2. Porterhouse Time Warner center; Great steak, boneless prime “Brandt” ribeye, exceptional space and comfortable, great bone marrow appetizer and salads, affordable wines by the glass, sides are all great, as if a fine dining restaurant prepared them. A great compromise between a classic steakhouse and a “new style” restaurant!

3. Old Homestead; Great steak, boneless prime dry-aged ribeye, lots of seafood, and Kobe options all very good. Hash Brown side is awesome! Dining room is a little cramped but worth it for the food.

4. Quality Meats; Good steak, bone-in ribeye, dry-aged but not prime. For some reason this is the most economical steakhouse, very affordable. The side potatoes weren’t exceptional, but the gueridon made steak sauce made up for it.

5. Dylan Prime; Good steak, bone-in prime ribeye. Sides were all very good, but the appetizers were just ok. Room is trendy and modern, gin and tonic was heavy on the tonic, had to ask for more gin!

6. BLT Prime; Good steak, bone-in prime ribeye, sides were all good, again a modern steakhouse, means potatoes and what not are prepared with care but the meat is lacking, and VERY expensive, also had to wait one hour for my table.

7. Sparks; Good steak, bone-in strip. Appetizers were very good, tomato mozzarella, Caesar salad. Room is very classic. A little expensive for what it is.

8. Smith and Wollensky; Great steak, bone-in prime dry-aged ribeye. Sides were horrible, really, when you eat creamed spinach, you’re not looking to bite down on a ball of flour! Very expensive, the most expensive steakhouse, really just go here for the steak and nothing else!

9. Peter Luger; Great steak, porterhouse drenched in clarified butter, all else was sub-par. Had a reservation but still waited and hour for a table, service was horrible and rude, sides and appetizers were like from a deli, AND you have to go to Brooklyn! REALLY just go here for the steak, but it’s not even worth it.

10. Striphouse; Ok steak, bone-in strip. Sides were ok, goose-fat crisped potatoes, but NO salt! The space is dark and gloomy with old pictures of naked women, just doesn’t have a good feel. Service was very slow and the appetizers seemed like a kid out of culinary school with a lot of ideas and no execution skills cooked them.

11. Palm; Steak not so good, bone-in ribeye, can’t even remember it that well, may have been boneless. Apps and sides all mediocre, service rude and slow, and horrible space, feels like a cramped deli with stupid cartoons on the wall and the place is falling apart. Never worth the visit.

12. Wolfgang’s; Steak horrible, sides horrible, service horrible, pretty much outback in Jersey blows this place away! Had a reservation but waited 40 minutes, only getting a table RIGHT AFTER I TIPPED THE MAITRE D’ 20 bucks. Steak was horrible, ordered a medium rare bone-in ribeye, came out literally well-done, when I sent it back (which I never do, but since I’m paying $50 for a steak, I would like to eat it the way I want) it came out literally raw! Had to send it back again, by this time my friend was completely finished with her meal, which by the way also had to be sent back because she asked for it with NO SALT, and it tasted like a street pretzel! Sides, apps, and even the gin and tonic was horrible. Asked for Bombay sapphire that surely was not! Never go here, best part is, the owner was a long-time employee at Peter Luger’s. No wonder!

The original Palm at second & 44th is the only one I've been to, several times. Always had a great meal there; bone in ribeye medium rare is fantastic. Caesar salad, Gigi salad, garlic green beans, sauteed mushrooms all good. No complaints about the service. I don't mind hanging at the bar waiting for a table (sometimes we show up with no res), I slide to the end and watch the action in the kitchen. Jeez, I'm easy to entertain . . .

I say, if the issue is *perhaps* that you are not really into going to a steak house... but you are craving meat... go to a churrascaria for a meat feast! Porcao or Plataforma.

Del Frisco's..are you kidding me? Mediocre food and service, typical chain food..I guess folks are dazzled by the room. For my money no steakhouse beats Ben Benson's. All the steakhouses have quality steaks but Benson's does everything else better then the rest.

Minetta Tavern, great meat, get the cote de boeuf

Sparks has some interesting history if that would make for good conversational tidbits. If I recall correctly there were some famous made guys whacked there.

I can't believe no one's said Craftsteak. Did it burn down or something?
