Meh!
I see a lot of reviews on here from SE bloggers and its readers. Some of them include descriptions like heavenly!, unbelievable! like nothing else! etc. You get the idea.
While some are pretty reliable, there are times when you just don't feel the same enthusiasm once you yourself have tried the product leading to a simple ......"Meh! it's ok. - nothing special."
Today I purchased Cypress Grove's Truffle Tremor at Fairway and it was just...Meh! Unless I'm not eating it right :), I just didn't find anything special about it. I got a small section for less than $5.00 and it's goat cheese (which I like) so I don't regret my purchase, but still....
Anyone felt that way about a recommendation from here or anywhere?
And yes I get that people's taste differ.

As you stated some of this has to do with differing tastes.
However, while I am open to trying new things, I am simply not going to try something no matter how much someone raves about it if it holds no appeal for me. That being said, I can honestly say that when someone on this site raves about something, and it is something I would want to try, I have yet to be disappointed..
Family is another story.....I have had rave recommendations from family members stating "oh you must try this restaurant" to "this product just came out and you NEED to get it!" so I have tried and more often than not, the product or restaurant has been a lackluster experience...
As the old addage goes, "to each his own"....

I've been disappointed by restaurant suggestions, more so than a product suggestion.
But I must say that I 100% agree with you on the truffle tremor. It's a total meh! I love the Humboldt Fog though.
Silvia at 7:53PM on 09/28/09
You know, putting an exclamation mark after "meh" kind of undoes the whole meh aspect of the thing.
SqueezeBottle at 7:54PM on 09/28/09
you have to take it all with a grain of salt (no pun intended).....
and as @italiancupcake says, "to each his own".... recommendations are recommendations and not guarantees. my friend will rave about stuff that i think is mediocre.... but i'm sure i might rave about something that someone else thinks is mediocre. and so it goes.....
cypress grove usually has great cheeses, i've not tried the truffle tremor....
nobody has a home run every time... maybe it IS just "meh"....

@Silvia, once I finish this cheese, I'm going to try the Fog.
@italian: I'm trying to open my world and that includes trying things I may not have had interest in before. Prior to this site, I never ever stepped into the cheese section of any store - well I did hit the Kraft cheese section-and now the cheese section fascinates me.
@squeeze: I thought about that, but the word looked better with an explanation point (yes, I know, weird.)
In any case, I'm still open to suggestions.

I am guilty of raving....sorry. I, too have bought something and loved it at the time and then found it not appealing as time passed. Why? I don't know.
I am also very reluctant to run to a restaurant that someone has suggested unless there is a second vote or I can find more evidence of 'incredible'.

@queenali - it's good that you're open to experimenting with cheeses... you just have to just keep on tasting ... and you'll find you'll probably like lots of them.... have fun!

Meh! The dumpling truck! (the vendy award finalist!) I was SO disappointed! I ran to get it when I read about it because it was in my neighbourhood that day and I was seriously let down!
Carioca at 9:30PM on 09/28/09
I'll probably get ripped to shreds for this, but after hearing about that goddamn Kogi truck for so long on this site I finally had some with a friend. It was a "meh" moment and I was really disappointed.
PumpkinBear at 12:15AM on 09/29/09
@QueenAlli-regarding trying new things-Good for you! That's the only way you'll know if you like or don't like something...You should try going online to Murray's cheese shop and taking that quiz. Based on your responses, they will hook you up with some interesting cheeses that you may like. That would be a good place to try. If you visit the store, the workers are patient because there are so many cheeses it can be quite overwhelming...
@Pumpkinbear-No shred ripping here--I agree with you on that Kogi truck..
Italiancupcake at 7:39AM on 09/29/09
@Italian: thanks, I didn't know about that quiz and I had actually planned on visiting Murray's this Friday.

@italiancupcake -- I hear you about the family recommendations. Among other horrendous(ly funny) stories, my husband's aunt told us to stop at this "amazing, fabulous restaurant" when she heard we were going away to [place] for our honeymoon. It turned out to be a biker hangout with extremely sub-par food. Awkwaaaaaard.
Don't feel bad about your meh moments. It's true, to each his own :)
avaryne at 11:11AM on 09/29/09
@avaryne-sounds like we may be related!! I have one of those too!! (re: aunt) ha ha
@QueenAlli-lucky you-have fun! let me know how you like it and what you bought....
Italiancupcake at 6:01PM on 09/29/09
Great topic...I think I feel this way often when I read great food product reviews, then try the product and fail to get the same kick. I'm especially prone to experiencing "meh" moments when I've waited a long time to try something, or paid more than expected or was planning on spending. I think it's safe to say it's the danger of raised expectations. Most recent 'meh' moments were were with JacquesTorres chocolates, Zzzang bars, and the cookies at Momofuku.
Of course there's the anti-meh, where you go in not expecting very much and then are wowed, and rave, perhaps undeservedly. Which leads to someone else's "meh", producing the meh cycle...
firni at 4:53PM on 10/03/09
@firni: you're right. I also have to keep in mind who I take recommendations from. If I know this person is normally dramatic then I can guarantee that their review is a little over the top.
QueenAlli at 5:56PM on 10/03/09
Happens to me all the time, especially with restaurant recommendations. What kills me is when someone will tell me to try, for example, a Thai food restaurant, because "it's the best!" but all they ever eat is Pad Thai...probably, not the truest recommendation.
