Iron Chef Party
So, I thought it would be fun, since I love Iron Chef so much, to have an Iron Chef party. My guests will bring an item made with "the secret" ingredient and everyone will go around and judge. The winner will receive a prize of some sort, like some silly kitchen gadget...
So, what do you think the first Iron Chef ingredient should be?? Nothing too crazy, but I'd like something interesting...Ideas?

I suggest Puff pastry...simple because savory and sweet items can both be made from it.

What about figs? They are really tasty and can be savory or sweet, paired with a lot of different things and are definitely not the normal ingredient - would be more Iron Chef than say....corn or something. :)

COOL! this sounds like a hit.
Be prepared to have a mess. I tried a community-cooking party once and the only thing I would have liked to do is have a seperate area for the cooking.
Here's my picks:
Challenging Ingredient: Fennel
Seasonal Ingredient: Tomato
Splurge Ingredient ($$): Rabbit (mmmm...)
Blue Cheese or Cheese in general could be really fun too!

I did a similar thing with my friends last year-- recurring potluck dinners with theme ingredients.
We did almonds (good for sweet and savory), matzah (during Passover), and... I'm blanking on the others! Fennel is a great idea-- I really wanted to do that, but the potlucks kind of fizzled out.

I have some friends who have regular iron chef parties -- they were even featured in an article in Saveur. They have some great stories about Battle Cinnamon. So I vote for Cinnamon. =) They also had a great time at Battle Ginger.

my friends and i did this a few times. battle eggplant was really good and easy to start out with, plus it allows for lots of vegetarian items.

i've done this before - we had a theme rather than an ingredient - farmer's market - you can only cook with what you find there!

my friends and i were talking about it this weekend and we're going to do an actual (non make-ahead) iron chef challenger between my and my friend. we came up with a list of potential citrus ingredients:
citrus (limes, lemons, meyer lemons, grapefruit, blood oranges, etc.)
legumes (string beans, lentils, peas, beans of all types)
tomatoes (fresh, canned, paste, fire roasted)

Yeah I was thinking tomatoes cause it is a pretty easy one to start with.... then make them a little harder as you go along.
