How do you control your food cravings?

I recently wrote a post on my blog about food cravings and what they really mean: http://www.shar-on-nutrition.com/?p=316

Wondering, how do you all control your food cravings??

hungrychristel's recipe for aboloshing unnecessary food cravings:
A dash of willpower, and dollop of courage, an ounce of metabolism all in combination with genes.

Seriously though?
Staying active instead of "munching", casual visits with MaryJane [weird but works for me], changing my channel AWAY from Food Network LOL, reading a book that doesn't focus on food, or talking on the phone. (by "munching" I mean snacking that shouldn't happen. Snacking is good for you in moderation)

I think I can excersise these strategies with good judgment. I used to struggle with this ALL THE TIME. My Oma used to call me "naschie" (sp?) all the time--meaning "snacky" or something. I was always in front of the fridge.

I brush my teeth. works pretty well.

I try to stick to mostly a paleo diet (yay meat and veggies!!) along with a daily 15-20 hr fast, but I still have the occasional craving for a pb&j or a large oatmeal cookie. Like just about three minutes ago.

Apple slices with peanut butter always does the trick for me. And it just did.

I don't. If I crave something, I eat it. A little bit of something satisfies the craving, and I'm done.

@hungrychristel - how in the hell do you partake of MJ and NOT get the munchies/craving? i envy that lol

when i crave something i make myself drink a full glass of water and wait a while to see if i still crave it. if i do, i eat it. half the time tho the craving goes away.

I don't. I eat what I want and have decided to just live with being a tad chubby rather than deprive myself.

Sometimes I indulge in very small quantities - which is a relatively new development for me. Two berries instead of a handful. Eaten attentively, they're just as effective.

Other times I promise to eat as much as I want "tomorrow," which might turn out to be "in two weeks," if I'm lucky.

Between that and lessmeatarianism, I've lost about 20 pounds in the past year, without trying very hard or even thinking about "dieting" very much.

Don't usually get cravings for a specific food, except potato chips. The best strategy there is not to buy them, but sometimes a little potato something else will do the trick. If

Here is the thing -- I only get cravings when the food I want is not there, and they only occur at certain times of the month. The next bizarre thing is, they are completely obscure and unattainable. Right now I'm craving Shanghainese drunken chicken with hot and sour soup. To just offer a taste of how weird it can become -- I've also had cravings for deep-fried chicken gizzards, Chinese BBQ duck on rice with the salty ginger-scallion paste, and mint chocolate chip from Bassett's in Reading Terminal Market.

Unfortunately, the majority of my cravings are hard to find in the city I live in, so I bite my lip and try not to think of it.

When I do get a craving that I'm able to fulfill, and it's still there by the time I get to the grocery store on weekends, I give in. Last month was anchovies, so I made anchovy butter and used it on bread for weeks afterwards :)

LOL @ listener: I ask myself the same thing!!!???!!!
I have no logical answer for this; it's just her magic!

@listener and @hungrychristel... I am the same way. Not hungry at all.

Like most answers I don't. I go with the flow and fulfill the craving. If I do not I become a disfunctional mess.

easy, i don't keep chocolate in the house.

Anxiety or Depression usually does the trick.

I don't.
I just avoid buying the foods that I usually crave. Because if I have them around, I will eat it. Like some flavors of ice cream.
I will try the glass of water and brushing my teeth!
Actually, now that I think about it... One way I control my after dinner sweets indulgences is by brushing my teeth very well for sleeping. Then I'd be too lazy to do it again after I eat.
So, voila!

chips and dibs

Wow, I can finally post comments.

Anyway, I have to make a plug for the book "Intuitive Eating." The book recommends keeping all the foods you could possibly crave on hand so that when you do have a craving, you can just eat that food and then move on.

It's actually a lot of work to figure out what you really want to eat and then focus on enjoying it. But it does make eating a pleasurable experience, which is new to me.

Another benefit: my pre-pregnancy clothes fit, which saved me a lot of money.
