Hosting a late season BBQ - What to make for dessert?
We're having some folks over for a barbecue tomorrow around 1. The guests are bringing quite a few items for the grill (chicken, shrimp and steak), so I plan to provide burgers and dogs and make a potato salad, green salad and a couple of desserts.
And that is where I have a mental block. I have a two day old unfrosted chocolate cake sitting in the fridge, so I could try to do something with that, like a trifle?
They have two young kids. What do little ones like for dessert?

Cobbler - berries seem to be in season. Goes with BBQ, easy to make and you can control how sweet you want it.

Cut the cake up into bits, cover with honey and coffee liqueur, and layer in ramekins or small bowls with mascarpone. Dust with cocoa and brown sugar, with a pat of butter on top. Let them rest (overnight if possible) then chuck them in a hot oven for ten minutes. Serve with a good vanilla ice cream, maybe with a raspberry sauce (I cheat and use seedless raspberry jam, cooked down with a sweet wine and sugar).

The other day I put cooked pear halves (I microwaved them and drained off the liquid) and poured prepared brownie batter over top and baked as usual. You can top with some kind of caramel or chocolate sauce and serve with ice cream. Sort of a pear chocolate torte. It worked well.
That or you can't go wrong with cookies.
Or for the cake, maybe "Dirt Dessert" crumbled chocolate cake mixed with chocolate pudding and cookies. Add gummy worms for effect. Serve in a flour pot with a clean plastic shovel.

I just whipped up some rice krispie treats--my 15 year old son requested them and wants half of them topped with nutella. Easy, cheap, quick and very kid friendly.

Yeah, cause I loved coffee liqueur, honey, raspberry sauce, rum, and trifle as a kid.
It's a BBQ and a frozen, two-day-old cake, for God's sake.
Cut it up, serve it with good vanilla ice cream, and offer whipped cream, nuts and hot fudge.
End of story. Don't overthink, SEers. There's a time and place for educating palates and fooling around. This isn't one.

@tmj, the alcoholic suggestions for a kids dessert is a little concerning... i so didnt notice that.

grilled fruit is always good, and super easy.
re: alcohol in dessert being served to kids---We aren't talking about pouring a gallon of rum over a little bit of cake here people. It's a small amount and really not that big of deal(IMHO). And to be perfectly honest, little kids probably won't enjoy the alcohol taste anyways. I have two kids and I really don't sweat the tiny amounts of alcohol used to add flavor... I guess some parents might have a fit about that though!

Thanks for your suggestions! I ended up scrapping the cake idea after I remembered that one of the kids is lactose intolerant. So I ended up serving something else at the barbecue.
The cake (which I never should have made!) has now been sitting in the fridge for an eon. I'm trying @Not's recipe with the coffee liqueur and mascarpone for part of it and I'm freezing the rest for a later incarnation.
