Grape Nuts

So we bought some Grape Nuts because my hubby used to like them..now he apparently doesn't. I am thinking that I can possibly make something he likes out of them! I have read about the bread and muffins and pudding you can make...I just want some real life exp. from my serious eaters! Have you made anything with GN's? Gimme some feedback!?

I like Grape Nuts in granola, could be a good way for you to use them up and tailor the recipe to what he prefers. Good luck!

Pudding and muffins are the only reason I buy grape nuts. Been a long time since I've made the muffins though. Don't remember what I did. This is basically the pudding recipe I use, though I usually add a little cinnamon as well as nutmeg. Some recipes are sweeter, and you could increase the sugar if you want, or even use some light molasses. The texture sort of reminds me of Indian pudding (cornmeal, molasses).

I don't recall the details, but some years ago, I made oven-fried chicken using crushed Grape-Nuts.

PUDDING!!!! I'm making some today.... Now with winter just around the corner, put the box next to the driveway salt to help give your car traction in the ice and snow......

Haha, Pavlov! Now that's out of the box thinking...

if you have an ice cream machine, make ice cream. The grape nuts soften a bit and if you add some vanilla extract and real vanilla bean it's soooo good.

@kmgagne.... when you say the grape nuts soften a bit, you mean it softens the way gravel does in water? HA!

Oh my goodness, Pavlov. I just snarfed my coffee reading that! :)

While I like grapenut pudding, I wonder how much someone who's decided they don't like grapenuts will like it. The pudding I've had tends to showcases the grapnuts. And they lose their crunch.

If you need to hide them, I'd recommend muffins or bread or cookies, all of which I've made at some point and they turned out alright.

@Pavlov, hehe. What I meant is that they get chewy instead of rock hard ;)

I keeeeed I keeeed.... I actually love grapenuts and understand that if put in an iron lung soaked in lye, put under a hydaulic press and thrown into an atom smasher they will actually soften up.... but the pudding is pretty damned good.

My mother used to make awesome cookies w/grapenuts. They came out soft and fluffy and were amazing dunked in milk. I can't seem to find the recipe....

i'm seconding kmgagne! my family's christmas celebration would not be complete without making grape nut ice cream- just vanilla base with them stirred in at the end of the freezing. the idea is slightly horrifying, the result is actually fabulous.

My grandparents used to sprinkle it on their nightly dish of ice cream "for fiber". I grew up thinking Grape-Nuts were something medicinal for old people.

@BananaMonkey-think you may be able to find the cookie recipe. I would love to try it..

@Pavlov-tried the atom smasher--no go-they were just as hard...

Seriously though-you can go to bigoven.com/grapenuts-site has a bunch of different recipes, including puddings, cookies, cake and grapenuts bread...

Toss some into muffins or pancakes. Add some to rice crispie squares for extra crunch. Make granola bars and add a couple of cups. Make some trail crunch mix. Stir some into the "crisp" part of an apple crisp.

Found some recipes here:

Give it to someone you don't like and who is afraid of the dentist.
What are Grapenuts anyway!

The ice cream suggestions are spot-on. Toscanini's, here in Cambridge, makes delicious grape nut ice cream. Soooo good.

years ago they featured a recipe on the box for hot Grape Nuts...(pretty much just mix with boiling water) had a little butter and seasonings...was really yummy and super satisfying with a great depth of texture. Also the muffins using Grape Nuts and apple sauce are great.
