eating my way through prague!
I am going to go to prague for 3 days. Since it's my first time there, anyone has any suggestions on where to eat?? I would like to eat authentic czech food, as well as their dessert like medovnik, and since i'm only going for a short amount of time (and stomach space!) I would like every meal to be worth it :D

No suggestions but a well wish for you to have a great trip- Prague is at the top of my list for our next trip. Please post what places you find!

Kampa Park is a beautiful fancy restaurant under the bridge. Sit outside if the weather is nice.
Other than Kampa I was working and unable to choose where to dine. I would avoid eating cabbage and potatoes until you travel-you will have plenty when you are there!!
Have fun, it is a beautiful city. I cannot wait to return.

In the city, avoid the places on the main streets, but try the places on the side streets. If they don't list their prices, leave.
Cast aside all hope of good seafood. Just don't even consider it.
Try pork knuckle, and the fried cheese. Some of the pizza is also excellent Neapolitan style.
I personally think the best way to eat in Prague is to visit the small, dark pubs and just ask for the special. Otherwise, you're likely to end up with microwaved beef with boiled potatoes.
Also, on Wenceslas Square, there are kiosks that sell Kielbasa that are first steamed over a griddle covered in sauerkraut, then quickly grilled and popped into a bun with some kraut. Do add mustard. And mail me one if you can.
There's a small chain of bagel places (I can't remember the name, but if you ask around, you'll find it. The best branch is right near Charles Bridge). It's a proper bagel with more-or-less whatever you want on it. And they know what tea should taste like (not very common, I've found). And they have fresh juice. Egg and bacon on a hot buttered bagel with hot tea and a glass of fresh juice? What better way to start the day.
There's also a good restaurant in the institute of architecture. It's in the basement, lit by candles, serves not-bad food for reasonable prices.
There is also a great jazz and blues bar not far from Charles Bridge (again, I can't remember the name) which has late hours, good drinks, cheap prices and great music.

Also, if you have time, would you place a white rose at the memorial to Jan Pallach, who set the world alight in 1968? It's in front of the museum at the top end of Wenceslas Square.
Oh, and definitely visit the Museum of Communism (as their flyers say, they're across from Benneton and above McDonald's). Fascinating, funny and poignant, all at once.

@notamerican - your post really pulls at my heart strings.... especially the white rose tribute. i have stayed in slovakia a few times on my way to ukraine -- beautiful old world charm... great food .... hard to believe those little countries suffered so much just a few decades ago.

@pooch; I know how you feel. I'm sure I posted this before, but our honeymoon was in Prague. The only major city in Europe that's never been bombed. Wenceclas square was actually designed for Soviet tanks to arrive quickly, but still the students came out, putting flowers in the guns.
My great-grandmother was from Moravia, in Bohemia. She worked as a cook for the wealthy in the States before she married. I still use her recipes.

i was there in 1991 and it was the most beautiful, exotic place i'd ever been. no one spoke any english {i got by with german, french and hand signals} and no one there had ever even heard of macdonald's back then.

I was there in 2001 or so, and remember eating at a little place on the river (to get to it, we had to walk down a very narrow stairway, single file and turned sideways to fit). We ordered the house special, which was a big platter of duck breasts, thighs and legs, and sausage, pieces of pork, sauerkraut and potatoes and came with some form of apfelstrudel for dessert. I remember it being delicious!
