Does ‘hunger and a buzz’ make a meal… AMAZING?!
I think it makes a HUGE difference. Invite everyone over and start drinking. After a couple hours if the food you cook isn’t perfect… no one knows… in fact, they will all tell you it’s the best _______ they have ever had.
Have you ever cooked meal that you weren’t familiar with for a crowd? You know what I’m sayin… It took too long to cook. You thought it was too salty or too done or raw… and yet… the slightly intoxicated friends and family nearly inhale all the food and tell you it was AWSOME!

I use this trick all the time. I'm really a terrible friend. Unattractive, too. But get my friends drunk, and all of a sudden they think I'm smart, funny, beautiful, AND a great cook!

Alcohol is a social lubricant. If the folks coming over like to drink, then the alcohol will most likely add to the enjoyment of the festivities. I don't know that it makes the meal itself better, but if people are having a good time then they're going to think the meal is good regardless. I tend to cook as much ahead of time as possible if a group is coming over, drinking or not. If I'm going to throw down with my friends, I'd rather not be in a position later where I'm going to have to wield a knife or pay attention to gas burner flames while intoxicated. I've witnessed two hideous knife injuries made by people to their hands when they were too drunk to be cooking. While they made for good stories later, it's not worth the risks IMHO. YMMV.

Interesting.... I tend to make food simple when I know there will be a big group of people. I like to cook pieces of meat that I can cook low and slow without fear of burning it when I am distracted by “shot thirty” or a beer run. Usually on the smoker or grill. I do all or most of my prep work before everyone gets there so all I have to do is throw it together. I really do think food tastes better when you are hungry and buzzed. I think your body is calling out to it “please… get in my belly… I have to eat so I can drink more or pass out”

Alcohol always makes food better. My friends and I try to hit up this particular bar on Tuesday's and then afterwards, we go to a Norm's 24-hour diner across the street. When sober, I'd think the food was shit, but at 3 a.m. when I've had more Crown and Coke's than I can count, Norm's mozzarella sticks, onion rings, fries, and chicken fingers taste better than any meal cooked by any chef in existence.

I witness this at get-togethers a lot. Not that my friends and I aren't good cooks, but I know what you mean... not quite perfect, yet demolished and genuinely praised regardless. It makes it rather easy sometimes. ;)

I think the cook can never truly taste the meal, because she or he has cooked it! I think the smells get in the way. To truly enjoy it, you must cook it the day before. Then add alcohol, and you will be on the same plane as your guests.

I don't recall the exact science, but alcohol, like marijuana, fools your body into thinking it's hungry, therefore, food tastes better.

Alcohol and food go way back. Together they can completley change a food profile. Thats why people get paid to pair food and wine for fancy resturants.

@pumpkinbear-that's a very good point. greasy diner food does taste infinitely better when wasted. perhaps that's why white castle thrives?

omg!!!!!Everything taste better after a few too many i find myself eating things i would never usually eat ...never has ramen or mac and cheese tasted so good. Leftovers are the bomb and anything fried , any diner food, anything that is fast....but my fave is like someone has already said...onion rings, fries, chicken tenders and cheese stix yummmm

hahah, i think just the word "amazing" comes out too often when drunk....like everything is AMAZING! and the best ever! hahah. i exaggerate so much when i drink.
christaleena at 11:08PM on 09/16/09
Yes , yes and yes. How do yo think I survive a multi course dinner, when the chef wants to get all weird on us? Pre funk cocktails and then wine with all the servings.

@gastronomeg
I don't think it's even legal to eat White Castle while sober.
MarvinDog at 4:12PM on 09/17/09
Tenile, you're so right! i hate mac and cheese from a box when sober but after some beers it tastes incredible. I wonder if there's science to back this up...
