Cleansing your palate after a rich meal: What do you do?
Last night we had some glorious mussels and shrimp steamed in wine, butter, garlic, shallots and tarragon. They were terrific but, oh so rich. (I froze the leftover liquid to make a sauce in the future.) It wasn't so much the turkey day full stomach coma syndrome that got to me, instead it was the richness of the dish that produced a light headed effect. I often go for a bit of sorbet to cleanse my palate but there wasn't any around. Instead I opted for a leaf of romaine and a couple slices of cucumber sprinkled with kosher salt. It seemed to do the trick. What do you SEaters do to cleanse your palate?

hey @dhorst - your dinner sounds delicious.... but i know what you mean about being rich. i guess you did the right thing with the romaine ... that's why in european households the salad is served after the meal..... it helps you digest. sometimes if i've had a rich meal and, let's face it - i don't always keep sorbet in the house -- a piece of fruit helps me.... something citrus. or like my grandfather used to do, take a little glass of campari... it's also good for digestion..... (so i guess the kids are back at school and miss ellie is missing them!)

I love that feeling. The calorie rush. I usually knock back some brandy after a big meal like that, either a poire williams, marc de provence or some cognac.

Some fresh fruit or a blended whiskey sour help to "settle the dust".

Tea, usually mint or ginger. I figure I'm heading off any ill-effects of such a rich dinner.

I like anything with lemon, lemon sorbet if I have it.

If I'm in between courses, I go for anything citrus. If I don't have sorbet, I'll literary head to the refrigerator for a small swig of orange juice, which is almost always in the house.
After lunch I often have tea. After dinner I almost always have a small piece of chocolate or biscotti with espresso or coffee. Espresso with biscotti is certainly the best for me for "settling the dust", as bubbamom says.

Soda water with lime works well also.
