What one food mag should I get?
If you could only subscribe to one food magazine, what would it be? I have been thinking about subscribing to one for a while and want to do it, but am having trouble deciding. I have LOVED recipes from Gourmet, I like Cooking Light's content, I am not overly familiar with Bon Appetit, but have cooked lots of their recipes from Epicurious. I have tons of cookbooks but like the seasonal aspect that the magazines bring. Any suggestions?

"IF" I could only choose one magazine- Bon Apetit
Food and Wine has excellent recipes too.
CJ McD at 11:03AM on 08/02/09
it's hard to decide on just ONE... because I like several for various reasons:
Cooking Light is one I subscribed for a while... but Vegetarian Times and Everyday Food I find are very good too.
MadelynRodriguez at 11:29AM on 08/02/09
Just for giggles I subscribed to Rachael Ray Everyday and The Food Network when offers came for $10. I didn't reup Rachael, but I have like the Food Network one. But my favorite has been Cooking Light. I have occasionally picked up Bon Appetite and enjoyed them as well.
janaatwg at 12:21PM on 08/02/09
Cook's Illustrated is still my favorite for quality of recipes and being an interesting read (plus the explanations of how they develop their recipes are often applicable to other dishes as well). The others have great photos, but so much of what they offer seems to be available online.
producestories at 12:44PM on 08/02/09
Food and Wine is the ONE food magazine we subscribe to.
Good articles, and great recipes.
Silvia at 12:49PM on 08/02/09
My favorites are Bon Appetit ~ great recipes; Gourmet ~ good recipes and beautiful photos; Cooks Illustrated ~ ditto above and Food and Wine ~ seems as though everytime I let it lapse, they then have fabulous themed issues and my selfish sister won't give me her copy!
I keep my issues for about a year (scan in what I want to save) and then I give them to the local tech school, which has a culinary program.
duncan1205 at 1:09PM on 08/02/09
Cook's Illustrated is top quality but Cooking Light also has a surprising number of really useful recipes, although after awhile they tend to get a little repetitive.
swampyankee at 1:18PM on 08/02/09
I've found they all tend to get a little repetitive after awhile.
I had Food&Wine for 3 years and switched to Gourmet and a few months in I added Bon Appetite and continued to pick up single issues of F&W at the grocery store. Several months ago, Gourmet subscription ran out and I didn't renew. Same with Bon App. Now, I pick up single issues of what perks my interest. And when I had a subscritpion to F&W, I'd pick up single issues of BA and Gourmet.
I think the times are changing...online is faster, offers more variety, you read what you want, instead of reading what they think you want.
wookie at 1:40PM on 08/02/09
Saveur is definitely my all-time favorite. I've subscribed to them all at one time or another - Food & Wine, Gourmet, Bon Appetit, but will never give up Saveur. Every recipe I've tried has turned as expected. They feature recipes for old-time favorites, such as fried chicken, mac & cheese, as well as a wide variety of ethnic foods. I have five-plus years of Saveur and will never part with any one of them. This month's feature is hamburgers, but also has a great section on hot peppers. Just try it once.
2fussie at 2:23PM on 08/02/09
Saveur and CI would be a god combo. Saveur for the great photos and writing about food and CI for practical information and recipe know-how. CI only comes out 6x/year so it's nice to have something else in the mail also.
sailordave at 3:29PM on 08/02/09
Saveur.
FoodieSearching at 4:17PM on 08/02/09
I love Everyday Food, from Martha Stewart. The recipes are all easy, quick to prepare, and generally use easy to find ingredients. The issues have great advice and good ideas. There's no travel, restaurant edit - it's focused on recipes, cooking great meals and desserts.
MMinNYC at 4:40PM on 08/02/09
I get a few, but Cooks Illustrated is the one I can't give up.
caramel at 5:46PM on 08/02/09
Food & Wine usually has just the right combination of recipes, articles, and product info. Gourmet takes itself a little too seriously for me. Bon Appetit can be great, but has a problem with advertisements--count the full pages devoted to such and then look at the total page count. And publishers wonder why we've turned to the web.
I also like Cooking Light, as much for the lifestyle content as recipes, which I confess I have a tendency to "fatten up". I used to adore La Cucina Italia or whatever the title was, but the new publication just isn't it.
Food Arts is great fun, if you can nab a free sub; otherwise, it's pricey. Fine Cooking is also a little spendy for what you get. Cook's Illustrated lost me entirely when the first line of their "Red Wines for the Holidays" article began: "Now, none of us drinks red wine..." Ahem. If that's the case, I can ask the guy next door who sits outside with his Mountain Creeks and a flyswatter.
kikihellman at 6:38PM on 08/02/09
I really enjoy getting Everyday Food. It has great recipes every issue!
watchforbears at 6:50PM on 08/02/09
No way could I ever choose just one. Gourmet has always been wonderful, and has a number of great features I couldn't do without. Also, the photography is exceptional. Saveur has the best photography of all, but you won't make many of their recipes. It's a "read and dream" magazine. Bon Appetit has fabulous Thanksgiving issues, and I save them year after year. They also occasionally have great summer recipes. Cook's Illustrated is another one I couldn't live without. I always assume their recipes will be the "best," after all that exhaustive research, and that isn't always the case, but I love reading it and getting good tips on techniques, products, and cooking gadgets. I once subscribed to Martha Stewart Living, and found it very annoying. (a bit like Martha...) Food and Wine was another trial subscription for me--one that I let lapse. But everyone has their own favorites built up over time. It will be fun for you to develop your own list of favorites!
Teachertalk at 7:00PM on 08/02/09
P.S. Don't spend more than $10 a year on Gourmet or Bon Appetit. They are always having subscription specials. You could do both of them for the price of a year of another magazine!
Teachertalk at 7:02PM on 08/02/09
Saveur.
ride&cook at 8:27PM on 08/02/09
I love Saveur for ideas and destination eating. I recently got a subscription on Ebay for 3 years/$18. Search under "magazine gift certificate". I had my first issue in about 5 weeks.
CornflakeGirl at 8:31PM on 08/02/09
Another vote for Saveur.
sugartoast at 10:32AM on 08/03/09
depends on what you plan to use them for, whether for bird cage lining or washing windows... I have found food magazines to be quite boring and good only for killing time while waiting for root canal, I think it is no coincidence that before you get into a Dentist's chair, they have magazines in their lobby.... they're a precursor to the novocain.
Pavlov at 10:50AM on 08/03/09
saveur.
cybercita at 10:52AM on 08/03/09
I used to subscribe to Food and Wine and Bon Appettite and Cooks Illustrated. But I didn't have the heart to throw them out. Consequently, I accumulated too many and it cluttered my apartment. So I decided not to renew my subscribtions. If I need a recipe I look for it online. At this point, I think I have every conceivable recipe
SavtaShayna at 12:04PM on 08/03/09
I only subscribe to one magazine and that is "The Art of Eating." I've never cooked from it, but I love the articles, and reviews of cookbooks.
Ortolan at 3:40PM on 08/03/09
I subscribe to a few. I let my subs to Gourmet and Bon Ap expire looooong ago because they became advertisements for Rolex instead of concentrating on the food. Adieu.
I sub to Fine Cooking and Cook's Illustrated which are a bit more technical (and neither of those two shine as they once did - I'm a charter subscriber to both). Both of these magazines have pissed me off royally by charging for 100% use of their websites. Screw that - I'm a charter subscriber and fully expect a virtual "red carpet" to be rolled out when I visit their websites - let alone have to pay additional money to use the sites. That's another rant.
If I had to recommend a magazine, I couldn't. I'd have to recommend two. Saveur is incredible for international/ethnic cooking, cool "insider's" travel suggestions and foodie literature. As long as you have access to foreign ingredients for the pantry and fresh components, you can cook anything out of Saveur. I've frequently been in the middle of reading an article in Saveur, skimming a recipe, and realizing, "hey I have ALL of that!" only to spring out of my chair and start cooking. The food photography is some of the best in print as far as I'm concerned.
The second magazine is Everyday Food. Since the very first issue, I can't remember not thumbing through it thinking, "I want to make that, and that, and that, and THAT!" The ingredient lists are purposely short with little "hands on" time and it's a small format mag making it easy to take to the store if needed.
Full disclosure - I have a recipe in EF this month but that did NOT influence my endorsement. As a matter of fact, my love of this mag is what spawned my effort to get a recipe into it.
therealchiffonade at 7:52AM on 08/04/09
I have issues. No, I'm serious. I have so many issues of so many cooking magazines that I don't know how I got to this point. When did it get so out of hand?? I get Gourmet, Bon Ap, Martha, Everyday Food, Fine Cooking and Cooks Illustrated. To be honest, about four of them started off as presents from well intentioned friends/family who knew I liked to cook and I have considered narrowing down. Poor trees. I buy Food & Wine and Saveur as a treat when I'm in the train station going to visit someone, as if I need an excuse to buy another magazine.
I will say that I enjoy the articles and cut a lot of savory recipes out of Gourmet and Bon Ap. I get cute dessert and concept/decorating ideas out of Martha. But overall, I actually get the most use out of Everyday Food. It's one of those magazines that I read and immediately run to the grocery store to make something.
meem21 at 9:44AM on 08/04/09
Cook's Illustrated but don't bother paying for the print edition just get a web membership.
bobbob at 10:13AM on 08/04/09
saveur if you want the best read, cook's illustrated/cook's country if you just want consistent techniques/recipes without crap advertisements.
punkrockmartha at 10:38AM on 08/04/09
i love cooking light :)
ndrewry at 10:56AM on 08/05/09
I get most of them. I would opt for Cook's Illustrated above all others. I find it mroe useful than any other. The rest have advertising. Without advertising or being beholden to advertisers CI doesn't have kiss anyone's ass, a plus in my book. I want a publication to call bullshit where they see bullshit.
JerzeeTomato at 11:05AM on 08/05/09
@efreehling - thank you for posting this topic. I've been meaning to ask :)
hungrychristel at 11:24AM on 08/05/09
Plate, its a Chef's trade Magazine. A lot of excellent recipes currently used in higher end restaurants, good theme focused issues. But you can't get it unless you are in the trades, even then, if you are not a chef it is pricey. The only magazine i have never thrown out an issue of after i read it.
Meat guy at 11:43AM on 08/05/09
If you know how to cook, Saveur. If you like the Food Network, any of the others.
Fred Rickson at 7:56PM on 08/05/09
I'll put a vote in for Gastronomica. I know it's a journal, not a magazine, but you can get recipes from websites that are in most of the other food magazines.
brucey79 at 2:41PM on 08/07/09
Between me and my moms, we read every single one, every single month. Bon Appetit is the standout. You will cook more of their recipes then say, Gourmet or Saveur (which are both great in their own way) and Cook's Illustrated only has, like, 5 recipes and is bi-monthly AND is more expensive then the rest. The only thing that bothers us lately about BA is that they tend to use these hipster models that don't really look like they eat much of anything. The food alone though is great, every month I read it from cover to cover and mark loads of good recipes, some of which can be followed strictly or just used for inspiration and interpreted in your own way, depending on what kind of cook you are.
porkydickens at 2:50PM on 08/07/09
Because everything else has been mentioned Art Culinaire. It's actually a large format hard cover "magazine" and I am a big fan of great food photography.
Seina at 3:59PM on 08/07/09
Saveur is the one I'd pick to keep. I'd probably even pay more for the cost of the subscription. It's the only one I actually read from cover to cover. Recently I decided to let one of my subscriptions expire--Food & Wine. Not only has the the quality of the content slipped, the actual quality of the paper it's printed on has changed lately. It feels & looks like cheap newsprint. All the others fall somewhere in the middle and I certainly could do without them.
kathyvegas at 8:45PM on 08/07/09
nobody said Eating Well - just got a good deal and I love their email newsletters!
ndoki6 at 10:52AM on 08/09/09
I've really lost faith in bon appetit and gormet...I love to cook with as extravagant and worldly ingredients as the next passionate foodie but it seems, increasingly more often, that i'm just flipping through either mag, not really seeing much I would really want to cough up my hard-earned cash on to make, let alone go on the goose chase to find the obscure ingredients. Last night i got my monthly bon appetit in the mail...I don't mean to sound narrow-minded, but i don't think i could have rolled my eyes enough when I saw that one recipe called for purple sweet potato vinegar...they mentioned you could buy it on a website at $13 for 4 ounces...Its just frustrating. I truly wish there was a food mag dedicated to the people that don't have gobs of money to drop on pricey ingredients that may only use for one recipe and that love to cook new, exciting dishes that they can actually afford and feel good about making.
honeywheat at 11:40AM on 08/09/09
I'm a fan of Food & Wine (though I still struggle to ever find any of the wines they recommend, the recipes are almost always wonderful and there are some great articles)!
Also, Cooking Light has good food and good tips for healthy living..
misplacedtexan at 10:04AM on 08/10/09
wow good looking out on the ebay subscription! i'm gonna have to say saveur as well. my mail guy at work knows to bring me extras of food & wine and bon appetit so i'm covered there.
for extreme food nerdery, i like gastronomica. but it is expensive!!
lazysundae at 9:14PM on 08/10/09
One word - Saveur! Amazing articles, information, photography -- it transports you!
rafnyc at 9:32PM on 08/10/09
I subscibe to two magazines. One may be expected, that being Cooking Light. The other is unexpected, but the best cooking mag I've seen. That is BBC Good Food. Recipes are easy to figure out (yes, I cook metric on occasion), they have a great variety of cuisines and styles and it's just a straight-ahead cooking magazine, no off-topic fluff. I've also learned a lot about various foods from BBC Good Food.
With those two mags, I don't need anything else...and if I do, there's the internet.
rmarcham at 9:47PM on 08/10/09
If you have a big enough library, I buy them (all of them) in the library bookstore for about 50 cents a piece. I can usually get the newer ones within 2 weeks of them coming out, the library gets donations of almost all the magazines listed here (from individuals or whatever) then they blackout or cutout the customer address and name.
I pick and choose depending on which ones have stuff to read.
I can confirm others suspicions here, and two different intervals I counted the ads, and ads that look like part of the magazines (just because they have food pics or merchandise or a small article and/or recipe) and they run from 60 to 75 percent in both Gourmet and Bon Appetit. I had these subscriptions for free for years because if you spend at least 40 or 50 bucks at ecooksbooks.com (or jessicas biscuits) you can pick from one of the two for a year free subscription. And I bought a lot of books from then in the past.
If you subtract the big pictures after that, then theres not really that much content.
I hated that I had a subscription to Cooks Illustrated but had to pay again for the online subscription...so I dropped the mag and subscribed to the site, then dropped the site because my personal preferences and experience did not consistently match up with their 'ratings'.
Saveur. I paid for that gladly...and found discounts for it too...
But now If I can't get it at the library I just go look at it on mygazines.com FREE
tyronebcookin at 9:48PM on 08/10/09
DELICIOUS from the UK is the best!!!
thejanius at 9:50PM on 08/10/09
Donna Hay Magazine is gorgeous to look at and filled with delicious recipes you won't see stateside. Because it's out of Australia, the recipes won't be "seasonal" for those in the Northern hemisphere. But, don't let that stop you. It's too good to pass up!
tracyschneider at 9:58PM on 08/10/09
Like many of you, I have a huge cookbook library. I have or have had subscriptions to CL, F and W, Gourmet, Bon Apetit, Saveur, CI, La Cucina Italia and on and on....but what am I using most often right now? Please contain your laughter..oh go ahead and laugh...Real Simple. There are no exotic ingredients (purple sweet potato vinegar?? oy vay), no fake food shortcuts at least in the ones I've seen, and have a lack of angst that I find truly appealing. You know a recipe is really good when it gives you ideas for changing it! Maybe it's just the heat...but I like the magazine's non-attitude.
joannabar at 10:16PM on 08/10/09
I liked Jamie Olivers magazine that he started putting out, not sure what subscription cost though...and I did like Delicious, Olive, and a few others from the UK but thats because they are not from here where I live (US) so the perspective was nice because it was new and different, and even some of the ads were interesting...but with time I am sure they would get old too.
tyronebcookin at 10:40PM on 08/10/09
I subscribe to Gourmet, Bon Appetit, Food and Wine, Eating Light and Fine Cookiing. I like all of them as well as Martha Stewart Living, Sunset, and a few others I get each month but my favorite for cooking and keeping is Fine Cooking because I can really depend on it.
Elaine68 at 11:08PM on 08/10/09
Cook's Illustrated (CI) to learn a lot and use (though I also think it stinks you get double dipped for the online sub), and Everyday Food to learn and use a lot. I've read many of the above and if it had to be one, it'd be CI.
Cooking Light? I know it's really popular but the majority of our country men & women weigh what??? Low fat is crap. I've had high cholesterol and been able to lower it (lower the bad stuff and raise the good) by eating grass fed beef and whole fat everything (organic and raw when possible...how can I afford it?...CSA/co-op/greenmarkets & smart shopping) and no meds. This was a tough question because each mag has different things to offer...Saveur, Fine Cooking, Gourmet, Eating Well, Martha Stewart Living and Vegetarian Times all appeal to me. I haven't seen or gotten the Jamie Oliver mag yet but I love Jamie so I'll have to check it out.
organicgal at 12:47AM on 08/11/09
That is a hard one. I subscribe to 5 or so, I have lost count. They all have there niche. Saveur tends to focus on one subject each issue. Cooking Light is great if your goal is healthy eating. Cook's Illustrated is wonderful for the how-to of cooking. Maybe you should pick two ot three!
charcooks at 7:06AM on 08/11/09
I'm afraid I let them all expire about the time all the shelter magazines went belly-up in late 2008. None of them has anything really new to say, I own lots of cookbooks I truly love, and all of the mentioned publications have Web sites. Why would you buy the magazines, especially in this economy.
expat39520 at 7:22AM on 08/11/09
Depends on what you want: Everyday Food has great, easy, recipes; Bon Appetit has a good mix of articles on food, wine, kitchen, restaurants; Cooks Illustrated is more technical. I love all three.
Carioca at 7:23AM on 08/11/09
Cooks Illustrated is what I'd like Food network to be, full of good quality information (tested) and no advertisements. Dave
old chef at 8:22AM on 08/11/09
Everyday Food is my magazine of choice. Each month there is something you can make without spending a lot of money. I try at least one recipe from each issue. I subscibe to FN magazine also but I will not renew my subscription.
Tweet202 at 8:24AM on 08/11/09
My faves are Cooks Illustrated and Savuer...two different food worlds.
sammie at 8:37AM on 08/11/09
I like either Cooks Illustrated or Fine Cooking.
tomfodw at 9:23AM on 08/11/09
Saveur is one of the best magazines out there, regardless of category. But as someone above noted, each issue is usually focused on a singular topic. So on its own, it may not suffice. But it's the best. We've subscribed to most of the other popular mags, but we now get just Saveur and Gourmet.
nycbroncosfan at 9:46AM on 08/11/09
There is a new on called Eating Well that I received a subscription to that is pretty darn good. Interesting articles and good recipes so far. I have gotten all the others over the years and have like them all. I think Bon Apetit is my all time fav though.
hooverdoover at 10:05AM on 08/11/09
It's hard to pick one so I subscribe to the following: Saveur; Cook's Illustrated; Food and Wine; Gourmet; Bon Appetit; and Everyday Food. My favorites are Saveur and Food and Wine.
foufou11 at 10:14AM on 08/11/09
Saveur. Stopped subscribing to all the others, even when they are offered for almost free.
Carlton at 10:32AM on 08/11/09
I've been wondering this too. I used to get Real Simple for the recipes...but now that I try to eat seasonally and from scratch it's a bit on the useless side.
Hanna at 12:33PM on 08/11/09
They have been doing seasonal ingredients and no short cutting for a long time now. . Their focus this summer has been on salad dinners. For example, their kid-friendly recipe of the day is about fresh spinach/couscous salad with a grilled steak. I don't want to think too hard in this heat so these suggestions are there, imho, to jog my memory. When I'm ready to think again, I'll go back to F and W, Saveur, Bon Apetit, Gourmet, and my over 300 cookbooks library for fresh ideas! Also, since the magazine's focus isn't food, it is useful for other things as well.
joannabar at 2:12PM on 08/11/09
Right now I subscribe to Saveur and EatingWell. I used to subscribe to Cook's Illustrated as well.
CI lapsed at one point and I picked up an issue about 6 months later and realized about 50% of the content was familiar and sure enough I pulled out an issue from 2 years prior and there were about 5 recipes in the old one that were "revisited" in the new one. So I didn't resubscribe.
Saveur I probably won't renew b/c the past several issues have had way too much advertorial in it. I used to really love the magazine but now I find it take about 15 minutes to get through and I don't have that happiness I used to have.
EatingWell has been a great source for health recipes. I find it less laden with "low fat" fake things than Cooking Light plus it just concentrates on food.
latenac at 3:00PM on 08/11/09
I really like Cooks Illustrated and their companion mag Cooks Country. Great recipes and the articles are fascinating.
Now, I know I'm going to get a lot of flak for this, but I just picked up the latest issue of Taste of Home and really enjoyed the new format. Yes, they have recipes with canned soup and biscuits in a tube, but I thought it was a vast improvement over their prior look.
My suggestion, go to your local library and check out some of the above mentioned magazines and find out what YOU like best.
muzzlet at 3:15PM on 08/11/09
Why choose? Chances are your local library stocks most of the favorites, and at our library I can check out back issues. So I can peruse Bon Appetit, Cook's Illustrated, Southern Living, and Cooking Light and even take home a few for seasonal stuff.
homerun2 at 3:30PM on 08/11/09
Saveur is great for its approach to the culture of food.
Eating Well is excellent for information and preparation of healthy food.
Also subscribe to Bon Apetit.
If all you want is recipes, look online: epicurious, food network, serious eats, chow, not to mention all the print magazine sites.
oobeto at 4:44PM on 08/11/09
Gotta be Saveur, it's just too much fun!
sven1 at 5:27PM on 08/11/09
How come nobody mentioned "Taste of Home" ? I think it's great.
cinderic at 6:49PM on 08/11/09
I sub to Everyday with Rachael Ray and Saveur. I have always loved Saveur. I used to sub to Bon Appetit (for many years) and to Gourmet (still love it but don't sub). My mom subbed to Food & Wine for many years. I don't like Bon Appetit as much as I used to. I would go with Saveur if you want an interesting magazine aside from good recipes. If you want a magazine of just good recipes to cook from then I would go with Food & Wine. I also like the new Food Network magazine. It is a difficult question to answer. So many good ones.
RisaG at 10:08PM on 08/11/09
Cook's Illustrated online - ALL the recipes and issues.
I subscribe to Saveur, Bon Appetit, and Cuisine At Home.

Cooks Illustrated gets my vote too. But, after reading this I might switch to Cooking Light for a year or so.

If you live in an area that has an "edible" magazine that's the one to subscribe to. They all focus on locally grown and produced foods. Great recipes and photo's.You can also pick up copies for free at advertisers locations but subscriptions help to support the magazines and the local foods movement. FYI: I am the publisher of edible South Shore, we cover southeastern Massachusetts.
