alligator and I liked it.
pjracz10 at 1:27AM on 08/31/09
Seal oil. It is STRONG and stays with you. Never again.
Bowhead whale on the other hand is delicious and I will eat it every single time I have the oppurtunity.
climbhighak at 1:46AM on 08/31/09
do you mean chitterlings (chitlins)?
i've eaten every part of the pig-blood, snout, brains, intestine, stomach, kidney, liver, ears, etc. etc. except the penis, most of every part of a cow/calf, testicals of all kinds, various bugs, sea cucumbers, jellyfish, balut, natto.
but i'd eat all of them again. i can't think of one thing that i wouldn't.
dmarina at 2:19AM on 08/31/09
Oops I thought you said wildest thing that I liked. No the wildest thing I have ever eaten the I will NOT eat again is anything offal.
pjracz10 at 5:06AM on 08/31/09
hmmm. I'm not a big fan of sea cucumber. Theres a lot of seafood I've eaten and love. Sea cucumber is not one of those.
engmcmuffin at 9:13AM on 08/31/09
Hakarl, the Icelandic fermented shark. It's, uh, something... Never again, but glad I did it.
Bakerloo Line at 9:38AM on 08/31/09
Limburger cheese. I love almost any cheese, but wow-- this stuff tastes like something that was scraped from the bottom of a foot somewhere, that's been partially pre-digested by someone else.
Other than that, there's nothing that I have tried that I wouldn't eat again. And I'll watch Andrew Zimmerman with my 10 year old and I can occasionally tell him, "oh year, I've eaten that-- it's pretty good."
MarvinDog at 10:05AM on 08/31/09
Here's my crazy list:
- Pork Brains
- Crocodile
- Beef tounge
- Beef Heart
- Horse Weiners
- Eel
- Kidneys
- Stomach
- Liver
- Blood
- Various Wild Game
- @MarvinDog: I HATE LIMBURGER! stinx like something I don't care for.
- I can't handle large quantities of rosemary anymore
I don't know if I would take any of them BACK; and I'd probably eat them again if I had to. At least I can say I didn't refuse :)
hungrychristel at 12:12PM on 08/31/09
Off the top of my head, sea cucumber and abalone.
Snake comes close -- but the one time we had it, my mother swears that it was prepared poorly, so I'd give it another try.
avaryne at 12:43PM on 08/31/09
Bear meat jerky and criadillos (bull testicles).
Ah, the things I do when I drink....
oh_no_eric at 1:54PM on 08/31/09
head cheese, mountain oysters and blood pudding
Poultrygeist at 2:01PM on 08/31/09
I really can't think of anything I wouldn't eat again and I've eaten some unconventional things (comparative to the standard Western diet anyway).
That hakarl sounds like a doozy though...
fuuchan at 2:06PM on 08/31/09
I've eaten an awful lot of wild things- elk, venison, rabbit, squirrel, boar, emu, ostrich, alligator, snake, rocky mountain oysters, etc. and odd things- head cheese (we made it), hog jowls, chitlins, heart, tongue and other offal, chicken feet, pork feet, etc., squid, oysters, abalone (a little tough), roe, fiddleheads, wild roots, puffballs, seaweed, haggis (better with lots of mustard)-- just a ton of odd foods. All were well prepared and return worthy.
Now sea cucumbers- bleh. .... not if I can help it.
CJ McD at 4:57PM on 08/31/09
Natto and I don't care how healthy it is, it's just really really nasty.
AnnieNT at 7:23PM on 08/31/09
avaryne, snake is so good when deep fried. and you definitely have to give abalone a second chance too. it can be really tough and rubbery if not done properly. but if done properly, it sort of tastes like the best mushroom you ever ate.
alligator is great. i like the cornmeal fried gator they serve at the gumbo pot at the grove in los angeles.
one thing i don't quite like is the sweet shrimp sashimi...it just has this weird creamy taste that makes me think it's gone bad.
neeki at 7:25PM on 08/31/09
OK- one more.
Wasn't really wild, but I don't care if I ever eat it again-- poi.
CJ McD at 7:27PM on 08/31/09
Durian - I was sure I could do it, but it defeated me!
njfoodiegirl at 7:44PM on 08/31/09
I see a lot of people mentioning sea cucumber, and that's something I haven't eaten-- and hadn't thought to eat. I guess I have to try it now.
MarvinDog at 7:46PM on 08/31/09
There are two things that I've eaten but will not eat again: snails and sea cucumber.
It's nice to see that I'm not the only one that doesn't like sea cucumber.
wunami at 8:29PM on 08/31/09
Uni, I had it twice and both times I couldn't really get it down. Some game meats, blood sausage, and the booze with a coiled snake at the bottom. Oh and some alligator, snake, durian (oh my god sick), and this half formed chicken in the egg...I ate it in Chinatown in Hawaii...Words can't express the sheer nastiness of the food item. Never EVER again.
kmgagne at 10:19AM on 09/01/09
@neeki -- I'm definitely open to giving snake another try. Abalone is on my short list though; I've tried it more than once, both home-cooked and at Chinese banquet dinners, and I just can't do it.
Also echoing durian. It's not half-bad once you get past the smell and the slimy texture, but that's if you can. I can't.
avaryne at 11:04AM on 09/01/09
I second the natto. I've eaten insects, raw whale, and all kinds of other strange things, but natto is the only one I wouldn't eat again. I can get past the mucilaginous texture, but not the smell. Interestingly, my dog LOVES it, so I buy it for her sometimes.
bialy at 10:32PM on 09/01/09
snails. ugh.
cybercita at 10:57PM on 09/01/09
dog...i was in china.
mimblewim at 12:15AM on 09/02/09
Okay, so this isn't the wildest food, per se, but in my opinion the fact that it can even be called food is questionable. There will be some of you who hate me for saying this, but here goes--
SPAM!! My mom used to pan-fry it when I was a child, and I dreaded it every time. Eventually I was smart enough to hide it in the bottom of our pantry where she couldn't find it, and eventually she just gave up trying to serve it to me.
If 'wild' can mean crazy, unique, and slightly unpalatable compared to any other real food I would ever allow to touch my lips, than this is definitely a wild food. Bleh!
luswim06 at 12:32AM on 09/02/09
French andouiette and its cousin saussicon de géminé. Barnyard-y.
Dish at 7:38AM on 09/02/09
kmgagne - That half-formed egg thing is balut http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Balut_%28egg%29
masalha at 8:01AM on 09/02/09
Sea cucumber, roasted baby goat, bone marrow, and snails. For a micro second I almost ordered the starter of horse cheek in Tuscany but decided against it.
Nemis at 9:09AM on 09/02/09
Sea urchin. Tastes like jello made with ocean water. The french love them.
cesnyc at 9:50AM on 09/02/09
I've eaten a lot of weird things, including insects (fried beetles), eel, all kinds of offal, durian, haggis, etc and pretty much liked these all, and would eat these things again. The one weird-ish thing I have tried and cannot get myself to like no matter what are "1000-year-old-eggs" - that gelatinous black egg white is just too gross. I keep thinking it's maybe something I should get over my dislike of - so periodically I try it again, but no luck yet. Ick.
Balut is very popular here in San Francisco - you can get it at the farmer's market among other places - but I've never worked up the nerve to try it.
Dcarl1 at 10:38AM on 09/02/09
I second the Spam/Treat!! Mystery meat in my book. And awful tasting!
The world would have to be ending before I would put it in my mouth!
Mountain oysters. They were on a buffet in Colorado and I tried them. Yuck! They were fried and breaded and tasted awaful.
When I was a child my mother used to buy head cheese and I ate it. But I didn't like it.
queenbleu at 11:03AM on 09/02/09
Raw scallops. I LOVE cooked scallops, and most other raw seafood so didn't forsee this being a problem. It tasted like I have shoved my face into a pile of seaweed that had been sitting in the sun for days. Both my husband and I could barely get them down.
cb1414 at 11:58AM on 09/02/09
Bear. Thanks but no thanks, Brother Don.
jayveejay at 12:57PM on 09/02/09
Andouillette in France (smoked tripe sausage made with pork stomach.) Not to be confused with Andouille in Louisiana. Which I did. Lesson learned.
lambowner at 1:17PM on 09/02/09
@ lambowner - We did the same thing in Paris at a little creperie in St. Germain! :D
chocomoo at 1:59PM on 09/02/09
@annie; I am so with you on natto. It's tastes like hell's own sneeze.
I also won't be having second helpings of fugu or sliced raw strips of horse anytime soon.
Also, New Yorkers? Good news. I won't be eating any more of your hot dogs, so there's more for you. It's hot, garlicy steamed dogs for me. Preferably from Chicago. Most preferably from Comiskey.
NotAmerican at 2:34PM on 09/02/09
I had haggis in the Highlands, just outside of 'verness. Two servings. One must use the whiskey sauce liberally. Now I can say I've had it, and I don't plan to pursue it.
chanterelle at 10:06PM on 09/02/09
@jayveejay Bear can be a funky depending on what they have been eating. Black bear makes excellent chorizo.
climbhighak at 10:43PM on 09/02/09
Tacos de chapulin -- made with fried grasshoppers. The legs were very spikey and sharp. Also, live scallops -- the muscles still rippled when the chef sliced it in half. It tasted good at the time, but now the idea freaks me out. One unusual thing I would eat again are duck tongues.
palimpsest36 at 11:17PM on 09/02/09
I ate guinea pig and alpaca in South America (in separate meals). Both were incredible. I'd have them both again in a heartbeat.
yayfood at 8:19AM on 09/03/09
@masalha Thanks! I couldn't remember the name. Yes Balut, sick!
kmgagne at 9:33AM on 09/03/09
Durian? Fine. Uni? OK. Natto? Never again.
markemorse at 10:27AM on 09/03/09
at platoforma churascurria in NYC they serve chicken hearts. Tried one, won't be trying one again. They're very tough and not particularly flavorful.
mr guy at 10:44AM on 09/03/09
Fish intestines in Japan. Tiny, slimy, and gummy.
mare09 at 10:53AM on 09/03/09
wasnt fond of stomach or tongue when I had them. I actually like durian, Im just not allowed to buy it :)
aimingforzero at 9:39PM on 09/03/09
