NYC Little Italy Bakery needed

For a surprise birthday present my husband are talking a friend to Little Italy in NYC for birthday cake in September 2009. Where should we go? I want to order it in advance as we live in NC.

PS. Any great Italian restaurants in NYC that make homemade fresh pasta you can suggest? I know many exist we prefer not to eat at a tourist trap.
