One meal in San Diego -- recommendations?

Hi everyone! I will be in San Diego for the first time this Saturday for only one night. Where should I eat?! I would love a place with a good view (maybe outdoor seating) that will leave me with a great impression of SD! I'm staying at the Hotel Solomar near the gaslight district if that helps. Thanks in advance!

get some mole and margaritas on the balcony at agave in old town. it's the one place in town my wife and I will not miss. truly outstanding food and comfy ambiance.

For casual SD at it's best head to Point Loma Seafood http://www.pointlomaseafoods.com. I've been going since I was 5, no trip home is complete without a stop there. Ah, man now i'm home sick! For a more upscale dinner head to Gaslamp, or for exceptional Mex I second Old Town. Have a fatastic time!

Everywhere has outdoor seating, so you're in luck there. Check signonsandiego.com entertainment/restaurant page. The "best of"s just came out this week. If you have a car, Mimmo's on India has great pasta, and a nice atmosphere. Nikki Rotten's in Gaslamp has good burgers and salads, if you don't mind the bar atmosphere. Red Pearl Kitchen is good for Pan-Asian. Cafe Sevilla is our favorite place for tapas (they also have a good salsa club downstairs). This is one time the down economy is in your favor. Most restaurants are running "recession" specials. And, while you're out, go to Rubio's for a fish taco. It's a local chain, so they're easy to find. Don't leave without your fish taco.

Chowhound on the california boards has lots of discussions about our best restaurants. The general consensus is that amazing dining and a good view are pretty much mutually exclusive although I always take my guests to the c level lounge on harbor island for a nice casual dinner and a stunning view.

I agree that el agave is fun, and if you sit on the balcony you'll get a view of the seaworld fireworks at just before 10pm.

My personal favourites are kous kous moroccan bistro, starlite lounge and urban solace, but they dont have a view.

Also check out www.aliceqfoodie.blogspot.com for her suggestions, she has lots of great reviews of places.

Old Town is great for tourists, but the overall quality of food at many of its restaurants has suffered greatly over the years. If you're willing to give up on the great view, the Hotel Solamar's restaurant is actually quite excellent. I'll also second the vote for Kous Kous. For tapas, I would actually vote for Costa Brava in Pacific Beach. And, if you really want a fish taco, forget Rubio's! Try El Zarape in the University Heights neighborhood (and make sure to try their avocado tomatillo salsa too). Unfortunately for the average visitor, most of San Diego's better food is located in (what even close-minded San Diegans believe to be) the less savory neighborhoods of San Diego. But, if you're not scared, here are some more options: Asmara (Eritrean restaurant in City Heights), El Salvadoreno (Salvadoran food just east of Downtown), and Island Spice (Jamaican place... also just east of Downtown). Don't forget that San Diego is basically famous for its plethora of taco shops. While locals usually have their own personal favorites, it's almost hard to go wrong at any of them. Good luck, and happy eating!

Go to "HODADS" in Ocean Beach, San Diego, CA. sit by the window inside or outside. Get a " DOUBLEBURGER WITH BACON AND CHEESE WITH THE WORKS" an order of Fries and/or Onion Rings with a large Arnold Palmer- free refills. You'll get one of the best burgers any where the fries are great and you get to see one of the best side-shows around walking by on the sidewalk. This burger will literally drip from your elbows, so dress accordingly. Do not deviate from the plan and you won't be disappointed [no single burger]. I've lived here over 35yrs. believe me!
