NYC Little Italy Bakery needed

For a surprise birthday present my husband are talking a friend to Little Italy in NYC for birthday cake in September 2009. Where should we go? I want to order it in advance as we live in NC.

PS. Any great Italian restaurants in NYC that make homemade fresh pasta you can suggest? I know many exist we prefer not to eat at a tourist trap.

THANKS,

Ann Marie

You have to visit Ferrarras (195 Grand St.) for the best pastries or cakes in Little Italy, heck the place is legendary(and have a cannoli). But for some great Italian, you don't necessarily have to be in Little Italy (although just about any of the places you'll get some really good food. I've eaten at most all of them and I've always had something good.) But on the upper East side is Tony Di Napolis(1606 2nd ave www.tonysnyc.com) and it is some of the most incredible Italian I've had. It's served family style, make sure you try the app. of fried zucchini.

Thanks will do.

i like eileen's cheesecake for dessert.

for homemade pasta - in the general area of little italy there is falai (lower east side). i would classify falai as "new italian."

you could also try dell'anima in the west village for a more traditional meal.

Thanks,

Ann Marie

No, not Ferraras. Definitely a tourist trap. I stopped in there a few weeks ago for a cannoli. It was awful, too sweet and gummy. And it was $3.50. I don't have a better place to recommend but do not go to Ferraras.

veneiro's in the east village! good stuff. plenty of nearby good italian restaurants. i think hearth is close by, though maybe more italian influenced, but very good.

Ann Marie,

I suppose it all depends on your expectations of "good", but I think very very few people who live in NYC would go to Little Italy for Italian food. But they certainly uphold a certain image of the old school American Italian restaurants, and that in it of itself may be good fun for a visitor. But if good food is truly what you are after, you might want to try elsewhere - in the neighborhood, Falai (also has a bakery/cakes) as well as Emporio are pretty good. You will not get spaghetti with meatballs or stuffed manicotti at these places though. Parisi's is a great place for huge sandwiches; and literally all the customers are local firemen and Italian Americans who have been going there for years.
