"Nerdy" recipe ideas?
As a fifth year student, I want to pull my weight and bring some dishes to the Computer Science department picnic at my school this year. Because I'm a huge dork, I would like to bring something mildly clever and/or punny. So far, the best idea I've had is to prepare a couple varieties of Mandelbrot, but I feel like there need to be better ideas out there.

My first thought was something with "chips." Or, do you have access to a live ram?
Phylum at 12:30PM on 08/28/09
Pi = pie. ;D

im sure this is not the nerdy/dorky stuff you are talking about but all i can picture in my head are WoW (world of warcraft) themed cakes and food... such as blue kool-aid as a mana potion.

@hereandthe
In a square pan, because Pi Are Squared.

What about some kind of cake that "lies"? Or brownies labeled "cake?" Cookies shaped like 1s and 0s?
Skythe at 1:14PM on 08/28/09
I can't believe I didn't think it pi(e). My memory is a bit flaky at the moment, so I'll have to check and see if that particular dessert tends to be fairly well represented normally.
@Phylum if I could get my hands on a ram (or knew what to do with it), that would be amazing, but I'm fairly well limited to what I can get at Meijer. Maybe I'll consider trying to do some decorative etching on my mashed potato "chips", but those are a pain in the butt already.
@CJ McD...oh my goodness. I have never been so happy to see a Gantt Chart. :D
@listener thanks for the ideas, but, yeah, I'm thinking more math/engineering/programming sorts of jokes than gamer nerd ones - at least for this occasion.
jwalz at 1:21PM on 08/28/09
I'm sure what ever types of "bytes" you "serve" will be appreciated.
As mentioned, Pi is a good one. Especially Pi squared. *L*

@Skythe, I think that my abiding love of Portal may be enough to make me reconsider the "no gaming jokes" policy. Brownies labeled as cake sounds brilliant if trials with Mandelbrot or other suggestions go poorly.

.... mmm....

What do they eat on the Big Bang Theory? I think it's mostly normal food with Sheldon being OCD about it ... so, haha, cheesecake factory. Make an iMac sheet cake? I dunno. I'm more geek than nerd.

I'm such a true nerd these responses truly had me LOLing in the office!!!
pricelessness! Really creative stuff. ROFLMAO for comment #1 hahahahahahahaha
You could maybe start with a 'theme' and then work from there.
Star Wars stuff could be fun, Computer Science could really be anything.
Quite a challenging topic I might add.
I'm a web and graphics "nerd"; so here's some of my suggestions:
1. Cyan Magenta Yellow and Black icing for cupcakes? (Its a bit subtle)
2. Chocolate-covered 'spresso beans ("Java")
3. You could bake cookies and leave a mould of some kind in the middle and call them Compact Cookies
yeah, kinda lame considering I'm supposed to be a "creative"
Good luck and don't byte your tounge in the process of uploading your cookies.

I spent 9 years in computers and brought little meatloaf men more then once, and the software people loved them.. I just used a little man shaped cookie cutter and cut out the raw meatloaf w/ it and baked it... great room temperature.

Square roots--square potato casserole or potato salad tray.
I like Pi best, though, particularly with Pi cut out of the crust.

I know a kid that puts velveta cheese on pizza.if that's not nerdy, it's just plain crap.

only one word comes to mind... finally.
conky at 8:08PM on 08/28/09
decorate cookies like Pac Man? (I was gonna suggest Pi and the candy circuit board, but am lagging behind the curve just a bit, evidently)

For such intelligencia, I'd bring brains. They are a delicacy in several cultures. Of course, your associates would likely barf.
You might consider this.

@ HeartOfGlass - square roots is hilarious! along those lines, you could make a root vegetable caponata and chop all of the root veggies into cubes. cubed roots!
