I wish I may, I wish I might...

I REALLY have tried...but as much as I wish I could like______, I just find it revolting....
For me it's Blue Cheese, Feta, Orange Marmelade...and ...just the thought of sushi....I know I'm missing out, but I just can't help it. What's your's?

63 Comments:

for me it is beets, sea urchin roe and fennel. oh and ginger.

I wish I might I wish I could like... curry dishes.
I have tried and tried, but I just do not like them.

Oh, dear. I am only okay with dislikes if the person is willing/has tried/seriously tried this particular dislike.
I'm sorry those things dont rock with you.
I have never met a food I haven't liked, actually. ha.

Tofu. I want to love it. So bad.

But no. Each block that has stared pitifully at me from the depths of the fridge where I had placed it always results in some horrible stomach-turning experience. I think it is PURELY because of my lack of 'skillz' in preparing it...so I am open to trying it. Buuut I have a feeling this is a no go.

That's it, really. The rest I have tried and I don't wish I liked them.

Blue cheese, eggplant, cilantro. I have gotten over so many other dislikes, but these three remain.

@eggyzhe: I'm no tofu-obsessive, but it's so versatile that I think you're right to hold out hope - I'm sure there's a way to prepare it that you'd like. (Personally I am a much bigger fan of tempeh than tofu, though.)

I will and have eaten most everything and of course I like some things better than others but I just can't stomach collard greens or cilantro.

I'll second you on the beets - I've tried and tried, but no thanx!

Sour cream, eel, curry, liver. I've tried with them all (except for the eel), the sour cream I just can't stand ~ taste or smell ~ even from across the table. Liver is gross in every way! Eel is psychological; blame it on a German novel called "The Tin Drum". I've tried curries many times but always had upset stomach results.

There is nothing redeemable about liver or sour cream.

Olives. Love olive oil, can't abide olives.

Almost any low-fat recipe - even though people say the recipe "tastes like the real thing," it just doesn't. I am not saying it is not a good thing to eat low fat, I'm just saying it doesn't taste good!

olives and pickles... I've overcome almost everything else (I used to not even eat onions) and I have started o eat olives when they are mixed with other things

I think it just takes a while of me eating things until I get used to them

tapioca pudding-texture thing
tuna-just hate it in all versions
tangerines-makes my skin crawl
munster cheese-ewwww
asparagus-can't do it
caviar-texture thing same as tapioca
cottage cheese-texture thing
Lima beans-no way no how
water chestnuts-just not my thing
liver-only good pate or liverwurst and never ever cooked the smell is gross
offal makes me want to gag
tofu-why bother

No way you are getting me to eat a mushroom. Or a raw tomato.

It's a textural problem, like others have said. Mushrooms are slimy and rubbery and tomatoes have this firm skin and then they are mushy and grainy. God, I am making myself sick just thinking about it.

honey and kiwi. and taco bell, if that counts.

I've had a lifelong aversion to anything jelly or jellied. My mother tells me that even as a baby, I wouldn't eat jello. I also can't stand the smell or taste of bananas.

Brussels sprouts. turnip and lima beans YUCK!
Octopus and oysters .. I know I would like them, I love seafood, but they just don't sound eatable.

Hmmmm. I like almost everything that you guys don't with the exception of taco bell like @punkrockmartha . I have never eaten offal @jerzee tomato what is it like? Escargot is difficult and I think the bugs and strange meats that Andrew Zimmern eats would land on the list of nuh-uh. I am not a fan of all curries and I only eat jello on 'prep' day and that is because I would be starving and light headed and I needed the sugar.

I'm thinking...I'm thinking...

i think it might be my loosy prep method, but different cooked greens, collard, beet, whatever... i can do spinach, but not much else. too bitter.

Wasabi, horseradish
Raw tomatos
Clams, mussels, oysters
Most fish
Lamb (i used to like it when i was a kid)
Goat cheese, blue cheese in large doses.
Caviar
Rice
Olives other then the ones in the can.

Tuna and beets ... ugh.

ditto on the jello. and uncooked bananas.

Mentioned this in a thread very recently, but for me, it's goat cheese. I've tried it 8 different times and god, I just can't. I've even tried Humboldt Fog. Now, I haven't had it melted or baked into anything, just plain or with fruit or crackers. But still. I can't stand that tanginess in the back of the mouth. Blech.

I finally thought of something. I HATE cooked (grilled, broiled, etc) salmon and tuna. I LOVE it in sushi/sashimi and ceviche.

I can only think of three foods I have tried time and time again to like and can't. Broccoli-it is not the taste it is a texture thing. Eggplant-every time I eat it I end up with a fuzzy mouth feel. Hard Boiled Eggs-the smell and the texture make me gag. Love eggs just about every other way.

Hmmm, all this blecih-ing made me think of a couple more...
I, also am not a fan of goat cheese...and hard boiled eggs...wretched!
My husband loves them, and so make deviled eggs for him nearly has me heaving...
I am holding hope for all my aversions...I use to loath Parmesan..Can you imagine??? Now can't get enough!!

Tomato soup - I love sauce, I don't know why soup bothers me... And I love grilled cheese so it seems like I should love tomato soup too.

Tofu - so bland

Beets - I've seen them in salads and they look like they should be so yummy and wonderful, but I can't eat them.

Eel. My boyfriend loves getting it when we eat sushi, but it just has this skunky weird taste that just ruins it for me...

Every time I try it I love it for about 3 seconds, then change my mind when the aftertaste hits.

Living in WY, thank god I like Beets --- probably have three or four pound in the fridge from my CSA right now.
Love sushi, cilantro, blue cheese, olives and brussel sprouts

I never have a texture problem with foods (though my mother does, let me tell you). I fear that if I ever encountered a dish of sweetbreads or offal (what have you) I would have to surrender. Don't think I could do it after being a vegetarian for seven years.

Don't think I could eat worm cheese (as seen on Bizarre Foods) either!

Celery. It ruins the whole meal. I wish I liked it because it's low cal...

raw oysters
caviar
cantalope, even the smell turns my stomach
microwave popcorn, again it is the smell

For me...
...meatloaf.

*shudder*

Mayonnaise
Watermelon
Oysters
Clams
Scallops
Okra
Monterey Jack

I'm sure there's more, but these are the worst!

I really wish I could stomach grapefruit.

Anything with curry or sage...those are 2 spices I cannot stand! Also sweet pickles...I absolutely love dill, sour, or anything pickled--just not the sweet kind...woof.

I'm with the tofu-why bother contingent, it's just nothing. Okra. Slimy. Here in the south, folks say, "You've just never had it cooked properly" (fried). I probably won't starve to death, because those are the only two things I really don't like, alTHOUGH, I haven't tried much offal...

Living in Asia the "wish I could" for me is spicy hot dishes of any kind,
and sesame oil. I love fresh herbs and spices but cannot breathe through hot spices. Oddly I love sesame seeds but find the oil sickeningly heavy. It makes for some embarrassing requests sometimes.

shoftshell crab.

still too wierded out by it.

I'd have to say...
- cilantro (not getting better)
- raw/partially cooked onions -- I'm slowly getting better about this
- raw/pickled garlic cloves -- I've tried it...just can't do it
- durian (laf)
- most cheeses -- the smell REALLY bothers me, e.g., romano, parmesan. I like mozzarella, gouda, etc.
- celery in any kind of salad (I'll eat celery stalks, cooked celery, most things with celery but I can't stand celery in salads)

Ketchup.

I get a lot of heck for it every time I bring it up, but I honestly can't even look at the bottle without feeling queasy. After so many years, this feeling still hasn't faded.

I have a hard time eating octopus suckers.

Almost everything mentioned here sounds delicious to me. I'm afraid my item is a bit more mundane--

Pretzels. Can't stand 'em. They make me feel like I'm eating hard tack.

You know that nasty metallic smell of a cookie sheet that needs to be thrown away? That's what cilantro tastes like to me. Metallic. Gross. But I love all Mexican and most Thai food! Just have to get it without cilantro.

Beets. I know they're good for you, but I just can't stand them.

Sweet pickles. 'Nuff said.

Oh, and liver. As a new mom, I thought I should feed my toddler liver because it was so good for her. The doctor recommended it, right? She loved it, but I gagged every time I made it for her. Thank God she decided she didn't want to eat it any more when she turned five. I haven't been near it since.

I'm with Gator--meatloaf is a freakshow of a dish. You can hide *anything* in that puppy. No way.

Texture issues with: sushi, hard boiled eggs, tapioca pudding, tofu.

Just plain nasty: beets, fennel, hot dogs, braunschweiger, SweetTarts.

Liver (It's always horribly overdone or underdone)
Most goat cheeses (Ultra fresh chevre is okay in small doses)
Cat fish (They get periods! Ewwwwwwww)

berries. i know, right? not stawberries, but blueberries, blackberries, raspberries...ugh. i want so badly to like them, but it is a textural thing.and apples.

Add to that any cooked fruits - can't do cobblers, fruit pies, etc.

What else?
Raw tomatoes, squash, red peppers, anise-flavored anything.

Uf. So many wishes!

Curries. Red, green, yello, Thai or Indian, I just can't do it.
Bubble Tea. WHY??? I don't want to eat my drinks.
Seared Tuna. I don't care how vogue, frou-frou, hip it is. I don't like warm tuna.

Extremely spicy food of any kind. Not enough milk on the planet for that!
Eel. No way, no how.
Raw Oysters. Fine if they are fried.
Calmari. The idea just doesn't set well with me. (Slimey!!)

When I was a child I couldn't stand cooked turnips and when I moved to the South I learned how to cook them so I could eat them. But I still don't eat them on a regular basis.

Sweet pickles... gross.

Stewed onions - I just find the taste and slimy mushy texture revolting. Any time I make soup or stew I toss in onion quarters and fish them out later. I love caramelized onions and green onions, so I'm not a total write-off. :)

Oh, and Sage. Someone mentioned this in their post and I forgot how much I really hate that herb. Blech.

Olives, chocolate, celery and beer. Gosh I wish I liked beer.

Watermelon....i always look at it and think it looks so inviting and summery....i just can't get beyond the mealy texture!

I have tried many, many different foods. There is only one food that I TRULY do not like, and that is...

...water chestnuts. I love Chinese food, even though most of the time I end up accidentally chewing a water chestnut. It's the texture that I just find revolting!

Other than that, I will eat pretty anything and everything. I don't really care for baked beans though.

Calves liver, goat cheese... I have tried several times and it just wont stay in my mouth!

Mayonnaise. But I don't really want to like it either.

Honorable mentions: eggplant (gag-inducing) and cottage cheese.

Baked beans. gross.

Oatmeal! Unless it's in cookies.

So many people dislike goat cheese and beets! So did I at one point, but nowadays one of my favorite side dishes is roasted beets tossed with goat cheese! They balance each other out.

Anyway. I dislike:
tripe
mortadella or any meat with big hunks of fat/gristle
supermarket bread (I don't want to like it, but it would make life easier if I didn't question the contents)

Avocado. I really want to be able to enjoy guacamole, but every time...blech. And why do so many sushi rolls have avocado in them. It's just wrong.

palimpsest36, that's so sad you don't like avocado... it's my favorite!

Baked tomatoes? Gag-tastic, cannot eat them, nor can I eat cooked tomato skin. I love tomato sauce, raw tomatoes, etc., etc., ...
I can now eat tomato skin in sauce if the pieces are cut up really small, but if not, i just can't swallow my bite.

As a kid, i hated cilantro, thought it tasted like soap. I love it now, i guess it's flavor just used to be too strong for my little taste buds

Sushi
Kim Chee
Foie Gras
Thai food
Offal
Velveeta
Squid/Octopus
Jello -- especially lime
Soy Milk
Bubble Tea
.... and more.

The list has gotten longer and longer as I've gotten older. Sometimes for health reasons, and sometimes not. A small confession: I would live on chocolate if I could.

This list is reading like a list of my favorite things. There isn't really anything that I have eaten that I can't see myself eating again.

The only thing I can't wrap my head around is fertilized duck or chicken eggs that you see in some Bizarre Foods type shows. It has to be either an egg or a bit of poultry. Not both. Mind you I haven't tried it. I think I'd go for bugs before that.

fois gras
also, sweetbread

cheap food....for some reason my palette leans towards the expensive.
