I call it "the Colt 45 of wine"

The Colt 45 of wines has got to be Beringer white zinfandel.... or as I affectionately like to call it, whore juice. Don't get me wrong, I have nothing against it... a bottle or two makes the panties drop every time... it is just a very generic fall back wine. Kind of like Miller Light or Bud Light for beer drinkers.

What is your fall back wine? You know, the easy one to find when you can't fine a great one.

Try not to waste my time. Life's too short for "fall back wine."

I've only had this while flying United Airlines back in the day. And no I had no mile high club experiences afterwards.

One of my best friends loves to drive me insane by drinking white zinfandel (NOT A WINE!!!) out of a coffee mug. I can't handle it. This situation rubs two of my pet peeves - 1) white zinfandel and 2) drinking beverages out of incorrect glassware. ARRRRRRGGGGGHHH! Just the thought of it is making me crazy.

baha! @happyeats this is just a funny topic name.
I feel the same (ashamed) that on budget-days I got for some baby duck. YA YA I know its cheap. My CK's will be guarnteed to be at my ankles that night.

My "safe bet" for wine is usually Prosecco. I don't really ever think I'm NOT in the mood for it. I just have to have the cash in my wallet on my way home from work. Lately I've been a beer-babe. Haven't had wine in quite a while.....it IS Friday....hmmmm....

Santa Rita 120 Sauv. Blanc is my fall back wine! The closest liquor store sells it for $5, and it's totally drinkable. I just saw a big display for it at Whole Foods (where they charge $7), so maybe I'm not the only one who opts for this solid, cheap white.

Gallo Cafe Chardonnay. I can drink it like water, which is good since my bf doesn't drink white and I have to drink all of it on my own (not all at once, well, not all the time at least, heh). I discovered it in my quest to find the cheapest white possible that I could also stand to drink, since I usually only buy white when I need it for a recipe. But now ... I'm starting to crave it with all this talk of cheap "wine" haha. $6 for a mag works for me! After all, it's Friday :)

What ever happened to Champale?

The one that I really think of as Colt-45 is cheap sherry. No matter the maker. And good sherry is such a pleasure! Once I learned about the real stuff, cheap sherry tastes like so much pancake syrup.

I am guilty of enjoying a glass or five of two-buck-chuck, too.

@Martinime: Gosh, that bothers me too (the glassware)-- there are beautiful, elegant, ergonomic glasses designed for specific purposes. they should be paid respect!
I have thing for stemware, though. just so so elegant and lovely, in a classic sense.

@derosa - so true.... if it's not a decent wine - i can't drink it. and that doesn't mean it has to be expensive. lately i've been liking monkey bay
sauv blanc .... had a delicious red from the north fork of long island, can't remember the name.... but it was good. these days it's hard to justify spending so much money on a bottle of wine.... unless you absolutely have to have it.... (and sometimes, well, you do!)

anyway, everyone is entitled to what they like, be it white zinfandel, cold duck .... remember mateuse? the stuff that great headaches are made of.

There used to be this stuff called Mad Dog 20/20. I don't even know what the hell it was; I just know I never touched it again. College years it was a jug of Carlo Rossi and Fresca mixed together. Post college/pre kids it was Almaden or Franzia box 'o wine mixed with Fresca. These days on a cheap night it's a bottle of Nathanson's Creek Chard with a nice hunk of Vermont's Cabot Cheddar and a baguette. How the years pass.

Hey, what about Thunderbird, MD 20/20 or Night Train? Those are wines that come in bottles that fit conveniently in your pocket, no need for a mug, much less a glass.

Seriously, as a fallback I like some of the red blends like Coppola Rosso.

I hope I don't come off as snobbish, but you can always find a decent wine to drink that is cheap, less than $10, etc. and not a Colt 45 of wine...actually, my local liquor store doesn't even carry Colt 45, so I consider it hard to find! =)

ha this is a funny thread. (unlike mine that spurred this--it just simply pissed some people off.) I don'teven know what some of these are! @inothernews: I agree. have had many glasses of vino that are very inexpensive, but are clearly of great quality.

Lately holding the glass gives me a hangover. I'll live vicariously through you guys.

Kendall Jackson used to be our cheapie chardonnay, but they have jacked the price up on it (around here) to around $15 or so. Quickly got tired of Yellowtail. Have not really found an under $10 decent wine for weeknight splashes.

Ken Forrester Sauvignon Blanc is reasonably priced and we like it. I guess that may be our fallback, but it's no Colt 45.

I like to kid and on a recent thread I was admonished about wine, so be careful....I like a very dry pinot grigio. (I understand...please no dissertations-my dad had a drinking issue, too) I have found that wines that are not commercially popular and don't have a big ad pushes are wonderful wines. We also like South American wines for this reason.

Names for cheap chick wine:

Colt 45 of wine
Whore juice
White Trashindel
Bitch pop

Any other ideas?

Liquid Panty Remover

"Liquid Panty Remover

Seriously?
Jeez. How much are you drinkin'?

Don't forget Boone's Farm.

@happyeats and @Remander - Why not just call it "I Can't Believe It's Not Roofies"? Seriously. Why do you need to denigrate others? It's not funny.

I don't know about a "Colt 45" of wine, either, frankly. If you're asking about an inexpensive, low quality wine that people simply drink to get drunk, I'm sure there are several out there.

Inexpensive fallback wine for me - J. Lohr Chardonnay.

Yellow Tail wines either tie up a meal nicely, or make the BF barf like it's Rush week at college.

lol... @Amandarama I love how you took it to another level... you must have had the panties drop and regretted it. Its ok... I know its not your fault. It was just that one time. I still think you are a good person.

I am only having a little fun... not trying to denigrate anyone... just laughing at names for cheap wine.

Learn to laugh a little... especially at yourself....

My left nut is smaller than my right... BWAHAHAHAAAAA. :)

dude, you are wayyyy too rich if beringer is your "colt 45 of wines." what about Wild Irish Rose? what about boon's farm? shit, what about Thunderbird? you know, the original hobo's wine? compared to that shit, beringer is classy shit.

@happyeats - "you must have had the panties drop and regretted it. Its ok... I know its not your fault. It was just that one time. I still think you are a good person." Are you trying to justify phrases such as "whore juice" and "bitch pop" as being humorous by responding to criticism of using such terms with language that is dismissive of and demeaning to women? Really?

Back on topic - fallback inexpensive red: Las Rocas Garnacha

@happyeats, I have a pretty high tolerance for bawdy humor but you're crossing a line here from almost funny to creepy & rude.

I'm sorry if the only way women will sleep with you is if you get them drunk first. Perhaps if you were a little less rude and misogynistic you might actually score with someone sober.

Well said @RegrettableFoodie and @Amandarama!

This guy's posts are not actually about food. I'm horrified and disappointed with Serious Eats for not deleting them.

White Zin is nasty. Until (real) Zin became trendy, I felt that I had to explain myself when explaining that Zinfandel was one of my favorite varieties.

Our fall back wine is Two Buck Chuck Chardonnay. If someone wants something sweeter, I'll make them a Kir.

...hm: well this got awkward. shame.

I am sorry... I had a rough weekend and vented on a food site... lame I know. Sorry everyone.

I am not ashamed to admit I purchase - and enjoy - Charles Shaw wines. I think people just have to drink/appreciate certain beverages for what they are, rather than what they think the beverages ought to be. I'm not looking for a completely unique, out-of-this-world experience while tasting the Two Buck Chuck - I'm just looking for a decent wine because that's what I feel like having at that moment & I don't want to put a lot of thought (or money) into it.
