Eating along I-87 -- Adirondacks
Hello Serious Eaters,
I would like to make a stop for lunch at a place not too far from I-87N on our way to Montreal on Tuesday. Somewhere between Lake George and Schroon Lake, perhaps (I don't know the region at all!) Any suggestions?
Many thanks in advance!

I used to travel this stretch, but it's been a few years so I hope someone writes with more up-to-date info. There's not much available. A MickeyD's, but otherwise you're best off heading into Lake George, where there are quite a number of spots. If the weather's good or it's the weekend it might be good not to be there at noon. This is a tourist stop- but maybe the economy has cooled it off a little. As to specific places, I can't help.

Thanks... It's my first time driving along that stretch, and it looks pretty dismal indeed. I think I might go into Lake George.

Steve's Deli in Glens Falls is pretty decent.

I actually made this trip a few weeks back to Montreal. I-87 is a VERY lonely road. Other than your standard fast food. There isn't much. Granted I didn't take any exits but there really doesn't seem to be much around there. Sorry this isn't very helpful. :\

Stay away from lake george. I went through there eariler this year and it's tourist hell.

it's pretty food bleak -- i once got lost up there-- i thought i was driving to syracuse and wound up 20 miles from the canadian border.... i suggest you take a cooler full of your favorite food. it is a spectacularly beautiful area.... pull over to one of the rest stops and have yourself a nice picnic. i think the most you'll find off of I-87 are fast-food - gas station type places.
but then again .... you never know.....

@pooch -- that's a good idea -- picnic.
Thanks everyone. It's so sad when you are to find... nothing! Strange feeling.

Hey this is a good thing. You will be ravenous when you get to Montreal! Do you have all your Montreal eating planned out?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adirondack_Park
Most of the area you'll be driving through is Adirondack Park, the largest National Historic Landmark and publicly protected area in the US. Not a ton of development, but we kind of like it that way. I-87 runs through it, but there is little else besides beavers and moose.
Glens Falls has a cute little main street with some nice places to eat. I hear Siam Thai Sushi is nice for Thai food, but there are also some "local flavor" diners. Glens Falls is a few miles before Lake George on 87 north.

Have a great trip! Once you get to Montreal, you'll have so many choices you'll have to eat 8 meals a day!

We stopped in Saratoga last year on our way to Lake George, and there looked like there were some nice restaurants to eat there- do some research and I bet you could find something worth stopping for.

In Albany try Platt's Place (Wolf Road)
Saratoga (exit 15) has a great sushi place, nice quaint downtown places.
In Glens Falls (exit 20) try The Log Jam. I think there's a Johnny Rocket's if you go towards Great Escape park.
Feeling like a longer detour up the Lake, travel to Bolton Landing and The Algonquin, true LG eats.

Platt's Place has been out of business for over 20 years. They used to have great ice cream and deli sandwiches. For the past 10 years or so that location has been a Buca di Beppo. Wolf Road is 1-2 hours south of where you intended to stop. If you do change your mind, avoid Wolf Rd. at all costs. It has every Olive Garden-Cheesecake Factory-P.F.Chang's-Outback-Red Lobster-Macaroni Grill known to mankind and is completely unrepresentative of what makes Upstate great!

There is a place called Sutton’s on Route 9 just south of the main strip in Glens Falls. Haven’t been there in years but remember having a pretty good sandwich there.
If you can hold out…head further north than you mentioned and take a detour on Route 73 into Keane…not sure I remember how far of a detour…. but worth it to find the Noon Mark Diner. Go ahead and have some lunch…that’s fine, but then plan to spend some time eating pie. EAT LOTS OF PIE!!!
Like me, you’ll probably end up leaving with 2-3 full pies to go (mixed berry was my favorite).

thank you everyone. Given the meager choices after Lake George (before Lake George it will be a little too early to stop) I think I might take Route 7 in VT to I89. Or pack that picnic basket (@pooch)! I called the CC at Schroon Lake and they gave me directions to picnic tables close to the lake!
@lexophile: yes. All planned, thanks!

I'm curious what places you've picked in Montreal. We try to go 2 to 3 times a year and always end up at the same places.
lexophile at 3:34PM on 08/21/09
@ lexophile
Bistro Boris, Lemeac, Olive et Gourmando, and perhaps Byblos. And La Maison du Macaron! Not very extra-ordinary.
But we are staying at a loft with a fully equipped kitchen. What I really want to do is go to the markets Atwater and Jean-Talon.

Schroon Lake is beautiful. And I second the Algonquin- if you stay away from Lake George Village and head to Bolton Landing it's much less touristy. The Lakeside, Algonquin of course, and one italian place close to both of those that I forget the name of.. OH if you want breakfast burritos- and who doesn't?- head to the Water's Edge in Bolton Landing- extremely casual like take out (most people drive up in their boats), you sit on top of a boathouse overlooking of a beautiful calm part of the lake. They have sandwiches and stuff too but haven't tried those. Sooooo pretty up there...
FoodStuffs at 12:47AM on 08/22/09
You can give Warrensburg a try, I believe it's exit 23 if memory serves and I seem to remember some pretty decent places around there, Grist Mill on the Schroon River is supposed to be pretty good, and it's barely out of your way. In fact you could take 9 from the Burg to Schroon Lake once you get off 87 and the driving through that area, off the highway, is absolutely amazing.
Saratoga is an option but is about an hour's drive south of Lake George, try the places on Broadway, I remember Wheatfields being good, and if you're in the mood for something lighter there's a lunch crepe cafe up there called Ravenous

Jean Talon market is unreal. So wonderful. We went for the first time at the beginning of the month. We had to go back the next day for a repeat visit.
lexophile at 9:35PM on 08/25/09
dear serious eaters: we stopped in Schroon Lake (exits 26-28)and had delicious crepes at Morningside Bistro. Voila! Thank you for all the suggestions.
