Best Raw Oysters in NYC
My boyfriends been on an oyster kick recently and so I've been searching for restaurants that serve particularly tasty ones.
Can you think of any restaurants that we should try besides ones that have "oyster" in the name of the restaurant?
Ideally, we'd like to go somewhere where we could get a variety of types. Thanks so much!

My new favorite place is Wild Edibles in Murray Hill. http://www.wildedibles.com/restaurant1.html
Love the Cherrystone clams as well.
Wash them down with some wine or an ommegang!

re: Wild Edibles - they have a great deal of something like a dozen oysters for $12 between 3-6 pm

Grand Central Oyster Bar is the best, hands down. They sell more oysters than just about anyone in the entire country, so they have the most varieties and the best prices and with that kind of turnover, they are always fresh. This isn't really the season though.

I like Aquagrill a lot, though I think it gets mixed reviews on this board.

Aquagrill has an excellent raw bar and a huge number of varieties on any given day. Lure is OK but their shuckers are sometimes sloppy. I have a suspicious that Grand Central Oyster Bar does not shuck to order, which is annoying.

I don't think they do either (the Grand Central Oyster Bar I mean). On the other hand, every oyster I've ever had there has been fresh and tasty, even in July. Oh those Kumamotos! And by the way, don't order anything else except the raw bar and oyster stews. The rest of the menu is dreadful.

@kathryn and annien - sit at the counter.
I agree that 99% of the rest of the menu isf regrettably forgetable, with the exception of the smoked trout, among a few other gems hidden in it's insane vastness.

@simon, I always do sit at the counter, and I've seen the plates of opened oysters lined up in their dozens. So no, they are not opened to order.
I'd try the smoked trout if you're buying.

For the good of this thread I'm gonna go to GCOB tomorrow, sit at the counter and get some oysters, and will get to the bottom of this.
