Best Mexican food in LA ?
So I'm heading to Los Angeles tomorrow for a week and i'm hoping to hit up some of the best Mexican places (trucks, full on restaurants, stalls out of a driveway... wherever). So i'm asking for some suggestions - say, like top 3 favorite mexican places in LA
I'll be staying near The Grove (I've eaten at Loteria many times already) and in Venice - but we are totally willing to travel for quality.
Thank you serious eaters!!

This is the hardest question ever. I was going to tell you just to stop at any taco truck you see, but I'm assuming that's not specific enough.
I've always had really good luck with the taco trucks near Olvera St. The usual stuff; carne asada burritos, tacos al pastor- whatever, it's all delicous. Plus, there's a tiny Mexican food joint at the end of Olvera St. that has the cheapest, yummiest food and the best mango margaritas. It may seem kind of typical to reccomend the most Mexican Street in Los Angeles as a place to find great Mexican food, but I'm a native Angeleno and a Mexican, so I reserve the right.

This question is no different than "best pizza in NY?" or "best barbecue in Memphis?" As with those questions, the answer is that (1) it is a matter of personal taste as to what is good and what is not so good, and (2) if you are coming from a region not known for Mexican food, then just about anything you find will probably be better than what you're used to.
If you have time, rent a car and take a side-trip a couple of hours south ... to Mexico. Have a great lunch. Return to LA.

i just came back from a week in Guadalajara... and I had some of the best mexican food ever.
I know this does not answer your question specifically, but I tried for the first time some "rajitas de nopal" and "rajitas de jalapeño" and they were awesome!! These are just tiny strips of nopal cooked in a sauce with corn and eaten with white corn tortillas. I also had chiles rellenos with cotija cheese with a tomato sauce with nopales... super good all the way.
I also tried jamaica agua fresca... its a "tea" made from the jamaica flowers and served chilled like an iced tea. It's fuschia in color and sweet. Pretty unique if you ask me...
So if you find some nopales or agua fesca de jamaica on the LA menus, give them a try...

Thanks PumpkinBear - I'll definitely give Olvera St. a try
I know this is a difficult question, I wish I had time to just go to Mexico - but alas, I don't ;) so I'll give you a bit more background.
A friend of mine from LA recently came to stay with me in Williamsburg and we ate at La Superior and she couldn't get enough of the tacos. It was my thought that surely she can get Tacos as good if not better in LA - but she didn't know where - so I decided next time I was in LA to try to find these places. We both grew up in Colorado - not as known as LA, but there is still a lot of very good Mexican food to be had. It's something we grew up with, and something I really miss in NY.
So obviously there are a ton of taco trucks etc. And I've gotten a bunch of recommendations (Loteria seems to be a clear favorite - and Guelaguetza and Tere's sound good as well) . I'm also looking forward to trying Kogi - but that's a different beast entirely.
So we're looking for any of those little finds (like the place at the end of Olvera St) - and maybe what they do best? Places in / around Venice would be a plus as that's where my friend lives.
Thank you guys so much.

Near Venice, I'd try Tacomiendo - consistently good, perfectly "hole in the wall"-ish and so so reasonably priced! There's not a lot of seating so think about taking it to go!

Can I go with you? I love mexican food and LA.

Tito's Taco's in Culver City and El Coyote in the West Hollywood area are a couple of my favorites.
I'll be headed home myself in a couple of weeks...can't wait for some good Mexican food!

Wow...where to start? I don't know the name of it (I'm sure someone can chime in) but my friend just told me about a taco stand near Los Feliz that has a James Beard Award. But I highly recommend Monte Alban in West LA. It is in a really sketchy looking strip mall but don't let that fool you. They make the most amazing mole I have ever had. I moved out of LA a few months ago but that is one of the few places I will insist on returning to when I visit.

PumpkinBear...which end of Olvera St?
I have the best memories of taquitos from some vendor when I was a kid. OMG...I can still taste and never found any better.
I have a friend visiting in September and will be seeking them out.

I have always enjoyed El Gallo Giro. they have several locations and they are open late.

That Mexican stand in Los Feliz is called Yuca's. It's def. worth checking out, namely for their carne asada burrito. For the best fish tacos, head out toward East LA to a place that does Baja style: Tacos Baja Ensenada. The shrimp ceviche is great too. And the Taco Zone truck in Echo Park on Alvarado and Montana. Happy eating!

if you want really good Mexican food, don't go to Tito's Tacos. that's just wrong. Go to Paco's Taco's http://www.pacoscantina.com/
calamar steak and fresh handmade tortillas are the best!
or go to El Compadre http://elcompadrerestaurant.com/ very good food here too

i love love love mexican food and have been to a lot of mexican restaurants. el coyote is great and has cheap margaritas for happy hour and different enchiladas than other places (they are super greasy and dark but delicious). sol y luna in tarzana is kind of out of the way but their mexican food is one of the best i have had in the city. then there's always el cholo, they have a bunch of different locations, which is nicer quality mexican food and has a bunch of different kinds of enchiladas. loteria is great too because it is different than the typical mexican food you find at most restaurants here in la.
now for taco trucks, i haven't been to that many necessarily to have a favorite, but there is a website all about the tacos in la http://tacohunt.blogspot.com/ which probably gives you too many options but it is very helpful.

I'd definitely second Yuca's. If you happen to make it to the San Fernando Valley you need to stop by Salsa and Beer for a torta. Don't let all the white folk fool you, they're the best I've had yet.

Avoid El Coyote, especially if you're looking for anything approaching authenticity. It's only worth it for the margaritas and to see the 'Tate Booth' where Sharon Tate supposedly ate her last meal.
The best Mexican I've had in LA was in Boyle Heights, near downtown, at Cirros. Cheap, authentic, slightly fancier than most dives. El Tepayac, home of some of the world's biggest and best burritos is right across the street. They also have a lot of good taco carts and trucks there at night, especially on the weekend.
Closer to the westside but still pretty far east from Venice, I heartily endorse Tere's, Yucas (2 locations within a mile of each other), King Taco (many locations), and Cactus Tacos.

I second Tacomiendo - very very affordable too!

I'll probably get yelled at for suggesting this, but I like El Cholo on Western. It's an LA institution that's been around since the 1920s. Particularly recommended are the green corn tamales, chile con carne (big chunks of meat served in an excellent sauce), and Enchiladas suiza.
It's Tex-Mex, I suppose, but darn if it ain't good.
I also like Tere's Mexican Grill on Melrose, just west of Vine. They make their own chips fresh, right there in the restaurant. I've been known to go there for nothing but the chips and a little tub of guacamole.
Osomatic at 7:34PM on 08/12/09
I love Casa Vega in Studio City which is just over the hill from the Grove and taking that drive at night is fun... my best friend swears by the carnitas platter! I also frequent Mexico City on Hillhurst, just up the street a bit from Yuca's (which I liked but didn't love). Barragan's in Echo Park is old school, tex mex style stuff.
@osomatic.... El Cholo is great!
mangabanga at 8:15PM on 08/12/09
I THIRD the recommendation for El Cholo. Especially right now when they're making green corn tamales. Hey, they've been around for 80+ years...they must be doing something right!
kayrob at 9:02PM on 08/12/09
I second avoiding El Coyote, it is very generic food and I've heard that their owners were avid supporters of Prop 8, if that matters to you.
Tacomiendo is very good, their homemade tortillas are really delicious. Also someone mentioned tortas, which I miss desperately, and Tacomiendo does those as well.
football foodie at 9:19PM on 08/12/09
Casa Vega has occasional celeb sightings, and they meet 4 of the 5 of our diagnostics: chips, salsa, 'ritas, beans and rice. I feel they falter on the rice.
Barragan's is great. We visit the Burbank location. I'd recommend the Huevos Divorciados.
We also like Don Cuco's in Toluca Lake, but mainly for the Sunday bartender, Jesse. Location, location, location.

If you want the best street taco experience- you have to wait until about 10 pm, drive just west of downtown to Beaudry and 2nd and go to the little stand set up in the old parking lot. This is Kike's (pronouced Keekay) and they seriously make the best asada, pollo, lengua, buche, cabeza, or birra tacos you can find (also- tacos are $1 bargain!). This spot is mostly locals and bike messengers, and appears kind of rough- but its safe and everyone is super-nice. They stay open until about 3 a.m. and there are always people eating at the fold-out tables. They have a salsa table with amazing peppers and different salsas- try all of them. My fav. tacos are the pollo and the asada.
If you want the greasy spoon style mexican food- I love El Cholo and El Campadre.
Loteria (the Hollywood location) is not to be missed for nopalitos and jalapeno margaritas.

El Coyote and Teres are more like Tex-Mex in my mind. I live near the Grove but drive to Venice when I want authentic Mexican. Try La Playita. It's a little hut at 3306 Lincoln (almost at Rose). They have amazing shrimp stuff, cocktel, ceviche, tacos, tostadas and burritos. I think it's actually my favorite place to eat in all of LA. It's mostly populated by Hispanic dudes at lunch, a very very good sign in my books.
Also, if you've never been to Grand Central Market downtown, GO! It's full of great places to eat really good Mexican and Salvadorean. Try either Roast to Go for INSANE tacos, huge and spicy and so good, or Sarita's Pupuseria. Hope this helps!

The place on Olvera is called "La Luz Del Dia" which means "The light of Day". Best carnitas in a sit down restaurant in LA by far. Also, if you are a chocolate fan I highly recommend the Champurada- it is thick mexican hot cholocate with hominy in it (sounds weird, but is DELICIOUS).
The family that owns the restaurant are the importers of Ibarra chocolate from Mexico so you know it's the best this side of the border.
