You obviously did not do your research. Lenny's Hot Dogs in Southampton, Pa was originally owned by Lenny Kravitz and had locations throughout Philadelphia. Lenny's Hot Dogs invented the combo! Lenny's mother's original pepper hash recipe is still being used today and is the best pepper hash ever invented! Next time in writing an article about the combo or pepper hash absolutely must include Lenny's if you have any credibility as a hot dog lover.

I don't know who 'really'' invented the combo, but my grandmother made a mean pepper hash that was based in the south at the time and that was used in our combos which was another southern recipe/meal. Maybe Nana should get a nod. This isn't something that happened over the last decade, but has been evolving over several. Along with my grandmother's I ate combos at college (in the south) nearly 40 years ago.

Hey man, I don't think hotdoglover is the writer of that article. It appears that he's just linking it.

@ gtvlad: I think the Lenny's you're talking about is in Feasterville - not Southampton. Is this the same Lenny's that used to be in Margate, by Lucy the Elephant? Loved those dogs with mustard, pickle relish and pepper hash.

The article was written by Rick Nichols, food writer for the Inquirer, and actually he's written about Lenny's many times in the past ... and definitely "does his research":

And most likely the combo was "invented" by Levis' Hot Dogs (R.I.P.) which was on south street, and opened in 1895:

I just re-read the article by Rick Nichols and please show me where he's giving out the "Hot Dog Combo" award? Actually, he says that the pepper hash was ubiquitious in Victorian times with grilled fish and fried oysters. I've read that article now three times and I still don't know what you're talking about.

So, hawk, what are your favorite toppings on which brand/kind of hot dog? Maybe someone should find out and put it on the menu--The Hawk Dog.

Ooops, forgot to tell you that the article was excellent, and thanks for all you do on behalf of us.

Natural casing hot dogs are my favorite, maybe because they're so hard to find in my area (Philadelphia) and much better than the 99 cent chicken dogs you find in our supermarkets.
It's hard to pin down a favorite as far as toppings / styles go, for me the thrill is in finding and trying something new.
But i do really enjoy the Philly Combo, and pretty much any variation of chili dog. And the "everything bagel" dog at Crif Dogs (cream cheese, scallions, everything bagel toppings) sounds strange but it's amazing.
I'm also a huge fan of yellow mustard.
