Anthony Bourdain drunk on latest episode!?!?
Did anybody happen to see how trashed Bourdain seemed while he was at the sushi place on the newest No Reservations episode??

Yes! And I thought he was drunk at the prime rib joint as well?
misterhee at 11:17PM on 08/11/09
oh yeah he was definitely a little intoxicated there also!
KWBrown at 11:29PM on 08/11/09
oh my god the shock!
are you guys serious? the guy's done countless drugs, on and off screen. what do you think the artful swirly screens and color distortions are meant to represent when he's smoking with the locals or imbibing the local concoctions?
unarata at 12:14AM on 08/12/09
I am so shocked and here I thought he was sober for one of the episodes.
Some people give their best performance when they are just as they are, drunk.
JerzeeTomato at 1:17AM on 08/12/09
Which episode was this?
RegrettableFoodie at 2:07AM on 08/12/09
What's new?
pjracz10 at 2:52AM on 08/12/09
I pray to god that some day, some wonderful person will approach me with an incredibly well paying job that only requires that I travel, stuff my face, make snarky comments ... and get shitfaced on television.
PumpkinBear at 4:43AM on 08/12/09
His quote from someone ,I didn't catch who , after tee muni marteemis " I went to brush something off my cheek and it was the floor" . Yes he was faced on leechi [sp] nut flavored vodka martini's and that was the funniest line of the show .
jfitz at 5:25AM on 08/12/09
Yeah I get shocked when he stays sober throughout an entire episode. That's why we love watching him, he doesn't just sample the local fare, whether it be food, drink, or uh...plant-based, he goes all in.
biabiaboiler at 9:37AM on 08/12/09
Uhhh, he readily admits that he's drunk in many, many scenes, plus you see him drinking many variations of what he refers to as the local 'rocket fuel'. If you read A Cook's Tour, he talks about being completely trashed in one hilarious episode, "From Russia with Love". He's no angel, and that's why I love him! He's one cool cat.
laurelie at 9:49AM on 08/12/09
@ PumpkinBear 'nuff said.
finsbigfan at 9:52AM on 08/12/09
I think he is at his funniest when he is trashing selected icons from the food channel.
tusti at 11:24AM on 08/12/09
Now I thought that he had cleaned up his act since his daughter was born and had quit drinking and smoking...was this an old episode or is back OFF the wagon? I love him either way.
sammie at 12:16PM on 08/12/09
Just one of many times......
CJ McD at 2:19PM on 08/12/09
After growing up with an alcoholic, I find that I'm not particularly enamored with watching a professional functional drunk. If it was the other AB (Alton Brown) who got giddy once on one of his road shows, I could deal with it because it would be a departure from his usual behavior. But seeing someone who obviously drinks so much that he can function well enough that some people don't notice ...and he does it regularly on camera... No thanks. And yeah, after living with someone like that, I see the signs and it doesn't seem fun or cool to me. Because if he's comfortable being that bombed on camera, he must be a real joy at home.
dbcurrie at 6:44PM on 08/12/09
He's toasted all of the time! I love him though!
sassy at 6:54PM on 08/12/09
Love Anthony Bourdain, I don't watch his show thinking I will be enriched morally, I watch his show for the food porn and for the smart assed comments.... keep up the good work Tony!
Pavlov at 9:05PM on 08/12/09
I think he has cleaned up the drugs, since his daughter (or even before) but not the drinking. Less, I'd assume. But when he is on the job, he's gotta drink with the locals!
Big B at 9:19PM on 08/12/09
I actually enjoy seeing him get drunk on the show by the way, I'm not in anyway against it!!
KWBrown at 9:44PM on 08/12/09
I've always thought there should be a No Reservations drinking game. It could be very simple... just drink everytime Bourdain drinks on the show and presto - you're drunk. If you add in other options... for example, take a drink everytime he eats or praises offal meat... you might die of alcohol poisoning.
mambrosio at 10:04AM on 08/13/09
Confirmation! I was wondering if I just imagined it. AB was definitely more drunk more consistently in the SF episode than others in recent memory. Was anyone else suprised by his frequently-stated inclination to hate the place? Who hates San Fran? I mean, I know Bourdain is pretty much anti-puppies and rainbows, but I still thought this was an unexpected turn.
jbrach at 12:06PM on 08/13/09
haha brilliant, a no reservations drinking game is definitely going to be in my near future.
cheesebreadbutter at 2:07PM on 08/13/09
he admits this. shouldnt be a surprise.
kcijones001 at 2:26PM on 08/13/09
@ tusti - AGREED! He nearly fell off my couch when he made fun of Giada's big, fat head.
kcijones001 at 2:28PM on 08/13/09
Nobody had said as yet: did you feel that his drinking took away from his performance? Was it not a good episode?
I haven't seen it (yet) but it sounds like Bourdin being his typically entertaining self, which I enjoy. If he needs to snort crack through a pig intestine, I guess I'd be OK with that... ; 0
beano at 2:31PM on 08/13/09
It was a good episode! he was awesome. Dont listen to anyone..he's still a sex pot.
kcijones001 at 2:32PM on 08/13/09
Why, oh why does my cable provider not carry the Travel Channel in my area? I'm missing all this.
CheesePlease at 2:33PM on 08/13/09
I thought he seemed even more wasted when he was at the Roast Beef joint.
EliEats at 2:38PM on 08/13/09
Was that Kenley from Project Runway in the bar that used to be owned by the mean guy? I swear it was...
And I agree -- Tony was totally faced at the Prime Rib.
catew at 3:40PM on 08/13/09
Good food, good drink, and good friends. It all goes together. If he eats well, drinks with new friends to the point of happiness, then he's doing what I call traveling.
Lorenzo at 3:53PM on 08/13/09
I couldn't care less - I just want to have foulmouthed, French babies with him.
GirlFromJetCity at 4:34PM on 08/13/09
That was the best episode in ages. I wish the Chicago episode had been so irreverent. He was too polite in the Windy City.
Nick Kindelsperger at 5:10PM on 08/13/09
well, the show does have a parental warning after each commercial break...
AliceBlue at 6:53PM on 08/13/09
He was totally schnockered. And I totally wasn't surprised. I think I've heard the only thing he quit doing for his daughter was smoking. Apparently the drugs were gone a long time ago. But drinking's still a-okay!
Probably the reason he "hates" SF so much is because most of what it's known for - at least politically, 'gastronomically,' and musically - is diametrical opposed to his likes and dislikes.
mollykate678 at 7:16PM on 08/13/09
He gets hammered all the time. Big deal. It's always fun to figure out just how drunk he is.
Most embarrassing TB/alcohol moment: while totally sloshed in the company of Eric Ripert and other chefs in Vegas, Bourdain gushes about being a chef: "this is the best job in the world!!" Ripert, ever elegant, politely demures.... That is TV gold!
Pointy at 7:39PM on 08/13/09
I think there's a difference between "drinking with the locals" and getting trashed. This difference is nicely demonstrated by people like Kevin Brauch on "The Thirsty Traveller" who quite clearly drinks on tv with the locals, but still maintains composure and a baseline functionality, and celebrates what alcohol does to food and culture, without getting obnoxious.
hungrysailor at 11:26AM on 08/14/09
To reiterate what so many have said... this really is not a shocker. It'd be more shocking it he stayed stone-cold sober for a whole ep.
lexophile at 3:29PM on 08/14/09
I love Tony because, he tells it the way it is! But, he's gotta give up the smokes. The, tobacco kind, that is.
Twinwillow at 5:21PM on 08/14/09
@Twinwillow
He did give up smoking when his daughter was born. I saw him speak late last year and he did a really hilarious monologue about Chantix nightmares.
Maybe he has gone back to it this season (got cable cut off and haven't caught any new ones yet! sadness)? Has he been smoking on camera?
cdp1223 at 5:37PM on 08/14/09
I am convinced that Bourdain has a second, back-up liver.
Susquehanna at 5:55PM on 08/14/09
I'd guess a little drunk and high. I've never seen him that tongue-tied before.
jboylan at 10:47PM on 08/14/09
Wish I could have joined him!
gwcafe at 1:14PM on 08/15/09
Bourdain drunk?
What are the odds?
Flighterdoc at 3:16PM on 08/15/09
there is a bar across the strreet, and the sushi place, Sebo, did not open on time...so he was drinkin at the bar for at least an hour...I was there...he had at least three pints...not THAT BAD.
applin22 at 4:17PM on 08/15/09
I love him. Haven't you all noticed that the food world (esp. blogs) tends to be just a little bit....twee, precious, earnest, correct, jolie....He's much needed.
skylarking at 5:46PM on 08/15/09
@skylarking: Must respectfully disagree on the twee-ness of the food world. Thanks to Bourdain, many of us learned in Kitchen Confidential that at least part of the food world is populated by a very skilled and yet depraved set.
I value Bourdain a lot. I just worry that hard-living is gonna' run him into the ground. And we'll lose him .
It was good to hear he quit smoking, though. Really do hope he's not drinking as much as some people suspect. Drinking a little here and there is no big deal.
Susquehanna at 7:12PM on 08/16/09
Susquehanna--and that liver belongs to Michael Ruhlman.
annien at 8:19PM on 08/16/09
I think you people need to get a life and possibly turn your televisions and your computers off
neddat at 9:42AM on 08/17/09
Really? Clean up your act for your kid. And shame on the network for supporting abuse. Hope all thier advertisers pull the plug just like they did on Glenn Beck!
LoveMyVeggies at 9:47AM on 08/17/09
You cannot make the entire world squeaky clean for your kids. Hurrah for Bourdain, he doesn't pretend to be an angel (and Martha Stewart is sucha stalwart example!
Tony - I am sick to death of politically correct hypocrasy. We watch your show because of you and your personality. Please keep on being whoever you are!
neddat at 9:58AM on 08/17/09
True, Tony did appear a tad "over-served" even for him, but hey, when in Rome, eat pizza! Most troubling to me was when he turned down the bonus prime rib portion!
SpyderDarling at 10:15AM on 08/17/09
Well I tell you what, he can get away with it a lot more easily because he's a man. If some new mother were to go around getting shit-canned, you can bet everyone would be screaming for her head. Think of the children! Only women are expected to completely clean it up for the sake of the family.
cookingbooks at 10:28AM on 08/17/09
That girl at the Prime Rib house was totally flirting with him. That was a sad scene.
However, they drank like 12309503 martinis that episode, fun!!!
juleslov at 10:49AM on 08/17/09
he looks like a drinker anyway..i have grown up around a lot of drinkers and i'm pretty good at spotting them just by looks and he does have the "look". plus with his job I'm sure he does a lot of drinking
Mallorie at 1:13PM on 08/17/09
@cookingbooks
I'm not sure-- Andrea Immer often seems to get rather tanked on Simply Wine, and I've never heard anyone complain. Then again, I don't think she has the ratings that AB does, so there are probably fewer people to notice/complain. And I'm not complaining, BTW. ;)
MarvinDog at 1:28PM on 08/17/09
DUH ! do you think, a maybe Tony drunk ? Anthony Bourdain is who he is and that's why I watch him and his shows.
butterfingers at 1:32PM on 08/17/09
I'm not on a moral high horse with AB or anyone else who partakes in adult beverages. I've been known to get sloshed in my life. But there's a difference between someone who has a few drinks and someone who is a drinker. If you've lived with a drinker, you'd recognize the signs and I doubt you'd think it was cute or sexy or amusing. Real, maybe, because it's really who he is. And if he's that comfortable drinking that much before and during work, in public, on camera, all the time, he really is a drinker. What he brings home to his family is probably a lot less pretty than what you see edited for a TV audience.
I don't care if he drinks until his liver explodes, I don't care what it does to his personal life, and I don't care how many other people think he's adorable. He is what he is, and no one is going to change him. I wish him the best. I hope he's happy. I hope his family does well.
A lot of people find that drunks are amusing. Fine with me, too. Watch them slur their words and stumble and be amused all you want. I don't find it amusing, but since I don't have to bring him home and make up excuses as to why he's passed out in the middle of the day, it doesn't bother me if everyone else is amused.
For me, it's all a personal matter. I just can't watch him objectively, because there's too much history with someone like that and it's not something I need to have stirring in the back of my mind. It's just way too uncomfortable for me to watch, whether it's in person or on TV. Luckily, when it's on TV, I can just change the channel.
Maybe AB is sober at home and he only drinks on TV and it's all a big act. Maybe you think that I'm being overly dramatic when I make assumptions about his off-camera life. Maybe. But even if it was an actor on a made-for-TV after-school special, I'd be uncomfortable watching it.
If it doesn't bother you at all, then I'm happy for you. Really. It means that you've missed out on one of life's great miseries. I think it's great that most of you don't have that kind of crap in your history, and I hope that you never do.
dbcurrie at 2:27PM on 08/17/09
Who cares. If it bothers you, do'nt watch it!
alainafl at 7:16PM on 08/17/09
Like I've mentioned before, I don't mind seeing him drunk on the shows, I was just commenting on it to see if other people find it amusing.
KWBrown at 7:36PM on 08/17/09
The funniest line I heard was about Giada having a really nice rack. The camera man is not filming what she is cooking and that is obvious. Let's get these two together.
sallee at 7:54PM on 08/17/09
@ sallee: I think the line was about how really BIG Giada's HEAD is!!
Pointy at 8:45PM on 08/17/09
@ Mallorie..... Good eye!
You know how I can tell he's a drinker?! He downs about 5 gazillion drinks an episode and they show it on camera.
Pavlov at 8:13AM on 08/18/09
Love his show and, as mentioned, there is a parental warning..but by the way, what is SF known for musically and gastronomically that he hates?
L.A. Pizza Maven at 12:03PM on 08/18/09
dude... isn't he drunk on EVERY episode?
HerbyN at 12:25PM on 08/18/09
he really scares me...I love to watch what he eats and yes what he drinks...I am a fan ....I gather he has issues....which are none of my bees wax!!!!!!
rabbitriddle at 5:04PM on 08/20/09
I found this that might just es'plain to all you puritans.
Day drinking, or rather morning drinking is the reason Tony was soused for most of the show.
Tony Bourdain deleted scenes form the SF episode
