What's your favorite novelty/odd food item?

Since the birth of bacon salt and probably even before, food seasonings, ingredients, and recipes have taken a turn for the weird. I say weird, but it's really just not commonplace. I love all the flavored salts, but the idea of a smoke cocktail isn't my idea of a nightcap.

What weird foods or food seasonings do you love and/or hate?

Aerosol cheese. I don't care that it's not cheese. I don't care that it shouldn't physically be functional. I've got a soft spot for it. Also port wine cheese balls.

@shoney I'm right there with you. I love anything with "cheese" in the name, even "process cheese food." I was just trying to explain my love of Easy Cheese to someone 10 minutes ago as we were eating some neon orange "cheese" popcorn that we both agreed was disgusting, but couldn't put away.

Aerosol "Easy Cheese" is popular with scuba divers as underwater fish food!
It's not terribly odd, but I like Cajun Chef Sweet Treat, a prepackaged, blend of ground cinnamon, sugar, and powdered vanilla which comes in a shaker jar. It's convenient and tasty on french toast, or when baking rugalach or a pie.

It is Cajun Power® Sweet Treat, actually.

I love the cheese in the can on crackers, brings back childhood memories. When I was a kid it was the Jiffy popcorn.

Velveeta. For me, there is no other cheese for grilled cheese sandwiches. And I know that it isn't cheese, but I don't care!

Spam. Enough said.

OH NO! Velveeta's not cheese?

I like dried cuttlefish snacks, sold in packages at Asian markets. Very stringy, very salty, very strongly flavored. People think I'm nuts but I've eaten it since I was a kid and still like it today.

oh my god--- Krauter Salz!!!! My favorite. Some cucumber salad with it might be the best salad around. So easy yet soooo satisfying. I had a giant canister of Krauter in college, and it was constantly going missing. It makes plain white rice a meal!

Velveeta is a staple in my house - ditto for Easy Cheese. And while I make my own pizza from the dough up my hubby won't drink anything else with it but cherry Kool Aid!

Yes to "processed cheese food" products.
Also: chocotacos, Haribo gummi hamburgers (gross, I know, but they are so cute and fun to eat), Totino's pizza rolls (haven't had these in about a decade, though)...

I used to love bacon bits when I was little, but I'm pretty sure I'd prefer regular old bacon now.

Pocky. I had to sound like a Pocky snob, but I like the stuff, dammit.

not had, HATE. sorry!

I can't remember the last time I bought a bag of potato chips but I am never too long without a can of Piknik Sticks! I think it's a variation on a theme I must have inherited, my mom has eaten French's Fried Onions out of the can as her "special treat" since before I can remember.

Marshmallo Fluff. Just give me the jar and a spoon and I'm good to go.

@foodStuffs - Man. I don't even really make dressings anymore! EVOO + any kind of vinegar + Krauter Salz = good 2 go! :D

@cook au vin: No, they are not gross, Haribo are fantastic! I was in Germany, visiting my brother while he was in recovery after being injured in Iraq, and my mother and I found a genuine Harbo store with nothing but Harbo products! It was like entering a little piece of Heaven... :) ahh, memories....

Don't tell anyone but when I get a craving for something sweet and don't want to do a lot of work I will mix a spoon of peanut butter with a splash of syrup- sometimes I put it on bread but usually just find myself standing over the counter with a spoon and a monkeydish with maplenutgoody filler in it. The good news is that it doesn't take much to satisfy and it is quick and it really does taste good.

Since I've figured out that I'm lactose-intolerant I have become a huge Nutritional Yeast Fan. It may not be an "odd" food for vegans, but I have met many a questioning start from my SO as I have sprinkle it on my dishes!

Kombucha - if you can get a good brand or make a good batch, it's like the suavest, most sophisticated temperance punch ever invented: tart, sweet, fruity, complex, with just a little fizz.

Synergy makes some good flavors - their Gingerberry Kombucha is my favorite.

A few weeks ago I was given a monstrous kombucha culture and was lucky enough to make a batch that tastes like a slightly carbonated cider. Lovely complex apple-y flavor - and there are no apples in it. This afternoon my husband treated himself to a full glass with ice.

I like to make "nori sandwiches" sometimes. i put wasabi paste or hot mustard in a nori paper with a very thin slice of cheese and a little roasted garlic, roll it up and I'm in seventh heaven. I also get a craving about once a year for fritos and peanut butter, something about the salty greasy sweet just satisfies a craving. Dont judge me please ;-(

OOOOH gentlyferal - I'm obsessed with Kombucha!

My odd food love is British malt loaf. It's disgusting (I love it!!).

I do love Vegemite on plain ol' saltine crackers.

Also, it's a bad idea for SCUBA divers to feed coral reef fish anything, much less spray cheese. I'm just sayin'!

@cook au vin and traveller: there's a Haribo factory? Like a place that takes tours oooooh!

I'm a fan of those little burger candies too,
but I'm even more in love with Göldbarn (sp?) and those black licorice "snake coils" OMG

dried mango candies covered in chile!!!

i love that you all put velveeta! that was the first thing i thought of. i'm not a big fan of cheese in general but i grew up with velveeta haha- it was a huge deal for my mom to cut off slices for my sisters and I when she was making macaroni.
so artificial and soooo good :)

also push up pops, with the flintstones on them,
and those animal crackers with the icing that have become impossible to find!
