tater tots

Corn on the cob.

I completely agree with both of those - especially the tots!
if you want something green, I would suggest some steamed green beans. Unless these kids wouldn't like green beans, that is...

Oh, yes - tots. and maybe some veggies and dip and a big bowl of ice cream. heh heh

for green, i would go with broccoli. i think lots of kids like their "trees".

Heh. When I make sloppy joes, I almost always go with potato chips. Not the healthiest choice on the planet, but it's rare we have chips, and this is the time.
If I'm feeling fancy, I might do potato salad and/or cole slaw. You can put a lot of extra veggies into potato salad and cole slaw if you want to.
A plate of sliced tomatoes, cukes and other fresh veggies is nice for the added crunch, too.

Yeah, sloppy Joes, corn on the cob and serve it in the back yard with a garden hose handy. :>)

Might as well go all out, like all above said tots, corn and carrot sticks.

French fries or tots w/ a small mixed green salad on the side!
jlewfoodie at 10:50PM on 07/23/09
I agree with the crisps (chips) idea, as you can use them to scoop up any Joe that has fallen out. Maybe some coleslaw as well? You can add grated carrot for health.
I sometimes (when we have kids over) do platters of stuff, and tell the kids to make whatever they want. I put out trays of deli meat, sliced tomatoes, lettuce, bacon, peppers, mozzarella, mild cheddar, coleslaw, potato salad, pickles, onions...whatever I can think of, along with a loaf or two of bread and a sea of condiments. They really like getting to make their own meal. I watched a neighbour's kid eat a ham, mustard, potato salad and cheese sandwich, and say (with mouth still covered in yellow-y potato salad) 'That's the best thing ever!'

Fritos.

potato chips and a dill pickle.

Cole slaw for my vote.
katiedid at 7:52AM on 07/24/09
Potato salad (I like German Potato Salad - mmm, bacon - but the kids my prefer the mayo-based version), pasta salad, coleslaw, dill pickle spears, or cut up veggies (red bell peppers, tomatoes, cucumbers) and dip...dare I even suggest Ranch dip?

I second the vote for tater tots! That's what we had as a kid with our Sloppy Joe's. Now I'm craving this meal!

As the OP, I was feeling guilty for thinking tater tots! I was just going to go with corn on the cob to keep it healthyish. Thanks for making me not feel so bad about it. :)
nalega at 11:12AM on 07/24/09
Yup, french fries to dip in the Sloppy that falls out of the Joe. For maximum school lunchiness, seve with corn, not on the cob.
FoodStuffs at 11:35AM on 07/24/09
I say pickles and coleslaw: same with a pulled-pork sandwich.
mmm...sloppy joes....
hungrychristel at 2:26PM on 07/24/09
I say cole slaw too, but not sure if kids like that.
flavacrisp at 2:59PM on 07/24/09
Another vote for potato chips. I like to scoop my joe with chips instead of putting it on a bun. I eat baked beans that way too. I have noticed that my brothers and sister eat their beans on chips too - we blame our dad since he did it when we were kids.
CooksForOne at 3:42PM on 07/24/09
tots? fries? salad? chips and beans? forget all that! What you need to serve it with is something decidely less potato-esque, something not so green! I say serve sloppy joe with a side of sloppy joe! Serve the sloppy with the sloppy!
