Macarons should be the new cupcakes

They can be made into pretty much any flavor. They come in a variety of pretty pastel colors. They're portable and neat to eat, and the name is so much sexier than whoopie pies.

I thought they already were the new cupcake.

I would be happier if fried pork rinds would be the new cupcake. It would be better for most girls' figures.

@squeezebottle: I thought whoopie pies were the new cupcake. Which is why I think macarons need advocacy. Write your congressperson (or Sarah Jessica Parker). Who do you think would be the Magnolia of the macaron world?

I still like cupcakes, although I wouldn't turn down a macaron or a whoopie pie, either. We hear a lot about how passe cupcakes are, but whenever I show up with a plateful, folks are all over them.

And they're usually gluten-free - you have my vote!

Nope. Cupcakes became fashionable for a few years because they had retro appeal to people who fondly remember them from their childhood birthday parties and PTA bake sales decades ago. Macarons have no such roots in the US. Besides, they just sound too French and pretentious for non-foodie people to go around asking for them the way they enjoy saying "cupcake."

Weren't cupcakes the new macarons just a couple months ago? There was a bit of macaron madness throughout the blogosphere and I feel like there's been much more of a focus on cupcakes lately, which has also been increasing for a couple years now.

Have meringues been the new "it" food? If they haven't, they should be.

I had a chance to "sample" (read "devour) macarons from Laduree in Paris earlier this year. The Fruits Rouge macaron's intense berry flavor still makes my mouth salivate! I also loved their Lily of the Valley macaron with its delicate, floral profile. I am all for macarons being the new cupcake- BUT I find it hard to find a good macaron with the right texture / flavor / consistency.

@ortolan, LOL!

Aren't they called Macaroons?

They sort of are, except most amateur bakers can't make them!

They require far more skill and "sense" of baking than do cupcakes...so basically they'll never be the new cupcake.

But actually, most cupcakes out there these days are bad (hello diabetes-inducing crusty American buttercream frosting + dry cake), so I suppose GOOD cupcakes may be the new cupcake.

in France...I'd def travel all the way back to Versailles to get another!!

That would be awesome! I wish it were easy to find macarons around here. I made them once, and they are difficult, but I don't think it's be too hard once you get it down. And flavor possibilities are endless. Wheels are turning...

@smallblondemom - They are macarons (French) to distinguish from the coconut macaroons, which would not make it far at all in a contest to be the new cupcake.

Judging by the amount of macarons I see on food blogs, I think they already are the new cupcake.

I definitely enjoy good macaroons, but the pie lollipops should be the new cupcake.

Nay. I am SO tired of 'trendy' food. I love cupcakes but I loved them before they were the 'it' thing. I love macarons but I don't need to start seeing them/reading about them EVERYWHERE. It just annoys me.

I personally never understood why cupcakes were the new cupcakes, or why any dessert is the new dessert. Yeah, there are stores that exclusively sell cupcakes, but it's really only because cup cakes are single serving for walk in grazers. How about the blogosphere starts covering a multitude of different, delicious baked goods, and that can be the new "cupcakes."
