Low cholesterol recipes

High cholesterol runs in the family and I think I eat healthy food (not a lot of dairy, olive oil instead of margarine, no beef, oatmeal/cheerios for breakfast every day, lots of veggies, etc). While it is most likely just hereditary, I'd like to try to see what I can do to be healthier.

So I'm looking for healthier recipes. Anyone have some?

well anything with lots of fiber should help.... salads, veggies, legumes, and if you're eating dairy or meat, try to get grass fed/pastured products.... it's much better for you, supposedly. stay away from processed foods.

Consider the following a suggested listing of ingredients... mix her up...
soy: tofu, soynuts, flour, milk, vegan "meats"
fish: salmon, rainbow trout, anchovies, sardines, herring, mackerel
beans: kidney, navy, pinto, black, chickpea, butter beans
grains: oats and oat bran, barley, brown rice
veggies: apples, carrots, avocado, spinach, other leafy greens, other veggies (there was not much ruled out except coconut)
other: nuts, garlic, tea, chocolate

There are lots of possibilities. You could main-theme soy, fish, or beans. Serve with grain and veggies.

I don't have any tested recipes, but I do have tips. Drain your tofu well before using in stirfry. Check vegan "meats" for their fat content - you may be surprised. Soak the beans yourself rather than canned - cheaper and not slimy.

All the things you mention sound like you're on about the best path you can. Sometimes, a person's body just manufactures cholesterol and even with a great diet (and exercise), meds are still necessary.

Take advantage of the fact that you're aware this condition runs in your family and keep on top of it by getting your cholesterol checked frequently. Do all the things you mentioned but understand that you still might need meds.

@blizcheetah - I have never been able to cook tofu. Should I marinate it or something?

a lot of people marinate it. you have to add flavor to it somehow imo. marinating is good for baking and raw uses.

personally, i didnt marinade it most of the time, cause i fried the tofu. wet firm tofu sticks to the pan. i usually added flavor by cooking it with lots of veggies and a light sauce made of a dab of miso and soy and some spices (ginger, pepper, whatever looked good).

if its your first time, i recommend the tofu in the store that comes prepped for a snack with a dipping sauce. try one of those. it will give you some flavor combinations to work with next time on your own.

my mom used to like it raw and cubed on salad. so some people do eat it plain. just not a fan myself.

also done with tofu: faux scrambled eggs, smoothies, cheesecake, and thats all i can remember for right now.

Whatever you do make sure you drain and press the tofu before cooking. One of my favorite things is to cube it and toss it in the fryer-then toss with bbq sauce or butter/franks hot sauce for some "fake" wings. You can always marinate it in anything that you would do chicken in then bake, broil or pan fry. I also like to slice it thin pan fry and make panini's with it. The options are endless.

Looks like you are doing well with your diet. Don't forget to exercise - it raises the HDL cholesterol (the good kind) which balances out your LDL (the bad kind).
