How to structure a food blog correctly?

Hi

I started a personal food blog called Good Food Stuff but I'm a bit unsure about how to structure the posts optimally, it'd be great if anyone had any tips!

My questions are:
- Tags or categories, what's best for organizing the posts?
- Is there a good way to organize recipes in an easy to search/browse way that is independent from the posts?
- Is there any point to having a gallery for food pictures, or should there just be pictures in each post?

Thanks for the tips :)
Rui

There is no "incorrect", so don't get too hung up about that!

I like categories, but that's just my style. The big question is are you going to categorize with some sort of heiarchy? Will there be types of food or the ingredients & cooking styles?

Yes, some blog programs let you create a page of "results" of a category search, some will just display all posts (paged if necessary).

A gallery is a nice option if you can handle it. Just reference the post that the photo is covered in with your caption.

I had categories with my first blog but changed to tags since most of my recipes are desserts - it's easier for me to tag elements like "fruit" or "chocolate" than to break it down into non-specific categories. I have a tag cloud of whatever my most used tags are at any given time in the sidebar, as well as a search function.

I agree that if you are going to cover a broader variety of recipes - different cuisines, or things geared towards specific meals - categories might be more helpful. But make sure you have a basic search bar!

I recently added a gallery myself, which isn't browsed an awful lot but I find it's the best way to browse my content on mobile devices. The pictures in it link to the recipes and it is easy to scroll through several posts' worth of content at once.

agree wtih VSM about the tags. I think there are programs too that will let you change all tags in case you've tagged some with "raspberry" and others with "raspberries" to rename all -- this is a pet peeve of mine when looking up recipes by ingredient.

not sure a gallery is really necessary if you have pictures in each post?
