How do you wine experts rate "Two Buck Chuck"?

I buy Charles Shaw (Two Buck Chuck) by the case at Trader Joes in Charlotte. It tastes pretty good to me but I'm certainly no expert. So how would you rate it among other inexpensive wines?

Go to www.cellartracker.com. Search for Charles Shaw. You will find numerous tasting notes

Well, you first must understand that it varies from batch to batch. The bottle you bought last week may not be what's at the store today, and certainly not what you'll buy in six months. They blend what's available in inexpensive wine grape juice. I'm sure there's an effort made, but it is not consistent.

But you know something? If it tastes good to you, that's the main thing with any wine.

Honestly, I have never had a bottle that I found drinkable. When I was studying in France, I would buy 2-euro bottles of perfectly acceptable vin de table, so I'm not prejudiced against cheap wine by any means. But Two Buck Chuck truly sucks. The reds are generally acidic to the point of harshness, and the whites are strange, musty and imbalanced.

Try it, if you like it all the better. If you don't, cook with it.

Whatever you do, DO NOT go to the regular supermarket and buy the $3 wine to cook with. I did and the wine was so bad I didn't even dare use it for cooking.

I'm by no means a wine expert but I've had two buck chuck and I'm not that impressed. Besides, it cost $3, not $2! Does the false nickname annoy anyone else?

On another board I was on quite a way back someone wrote : "It's not bad for $2, if you close your eyes you might even think you're drinking a $4 bottle of wine". Made me laugh.

I am a cab lover and I thought it was a very good wine honestly. I didnt think it seemed to acidic. Perhaps I got a good batch. Our tax laws in MI are insane on any and all spirits sort to speak so when I can get a 3.00 bottle of wine I buy a case....our closest Trader Joes is in Milwaukee. I did hear that the rumor of the nasty divorce and selling it cheap is not true. I also know that the same bottle at our local Econo Foods is $12.99 and thats a fact..

it will probably taste great with your 69 cent pot pie...LOL!

I know next to nothing about wine, but I really like @Lemons last sentiment. That is like the best, most non-pretentious advice a wine noob can hear!

I'm usually game to give cheap wines a go and I've got some friends that buy cases of this stuff. I really don't like it though. It's not real smooth and can taste off from time to time. I do like to keep a couple cheap bottles around for people stopping by, but I wouldn't serve this to any of my friends. Some people do like it though I guess.

@hillary. Regarding the name: I don't know where you are.. but it is to my understanding that the "Two Buck Chuck" is actually two dollars over on the west coast. In New York, I've always seen it at three. The explanation has been the cost of shipping or something. I dont know if there might be something special about moving alcohol across state lines. Not sure.

@engmcmuffin - Thanks for addressing this! I live in Chicago which is obviously closer to the west coast than NY but its still $3. Oh well.

It's $2.99 in Charlotte so you can't call it Three Buck Chuck just yet. It sure beats the $2.99 Oak Leaf from Walmart and the $2.99 Winking Owl from Aldi.

Actually the Merlot doesn't taste so good with a $.69 pot pie but pretty darn good with a Moon Pie.
