I've always heard bee-bim-bop. I'm sure some Korean speakers here could enlighten us, though. I figure my lousy American accent on it is about as good as I'll get, so bee-bim-bop works for me.
How else were you thinking it might be pronounced?

A Korean friend of mine pronounces it the same: BEE-bim-bop, stress on the first syllable.
I was never laughed at, corrected, or looked at with question when ordering it this way in the Korean mall food court where I was most often the only caucasion. Maybe the counter people were just being polite?

yes its bee-beem-bop, (or bee-bim-bop). i work at a korean restaurant in nyc,, and i have heard soooo many variations of this word. BIM BIM BOP, BIP BIM BOP..... and even BOP BOP BOP. in korean, bee-bim means mixed and bop means rice, so literally bop bop bop would be rice rice rice. but i have learn to let go of the urge to teach the correct pronounciation... i had been pronouncing KNISH as NEE SH for about a year. ;p

its not "bop" as you would say kidz bop.
but its not really "bap" either
so its something in between,
like bee- bim- bahp, ( you need that ahhh sound)
bee bim baaaaaap
or bee bim booop
sounds very..unkorean

I have no idea what you guys are even talking about but I'm pronouncing this word along with every entry and I'm grateful that I'm the only one home. :D

oh chif... bibimbop is such an amazing, yet simple and homey Korean dish. It involves a bowl of rice topped with a mixture of julienned vegetables and thinly sliced meat, and sometimes egg plus a spicy chili sauce. Its meant to be all mixed together right before eating. I am partial to dolsot bibimbop, where they serve it in a sizzling hot stone bowl and crack a raw egg over it so that it mixes in and cooks right there.
damn. now im hungry

@engmcmuffin- I want dolsot bibimbop NOW!

Initially I thought the letter i might have a long sound (as in ice), then I thought it might be bee-beem-BAP, and I couldn't figure out which syllable to emphasize...Anyway, learn something new everyday, thanks guys!
@ Chiff - LOL

All right...all right. I'm now on the lookout for a Korean place and believe me, this is the first thing I'll order. I've never been shy about asking people for pronunciations, I'll be doing that as well.

bibim = mixed & bop = rice or meal.
it's pronounced bee-bim-bahp.
you don't stress any syllables but BAHP naturally sounds emphasized b/c of the P sound at the end. technically it's between a B and a P so no need to pop your lips.
once korean syllables are written out in english, you'll encounter numerous ways to spell the same sound; sometimes by stringing three vowels in a row, which only makes the word illegible. consonants are often overcompensated. for ex., kimchi is actually pronounced gim-chee.
gastrodamus at 6:46PM on 07/09/09
just had a shrimp bibimbap for lunch....deelish
famdoc at 6:49PM on 07/09/09
I've been pronouncing it bee-beem-bahp.
@gastrodamus: It's amazing how differently the same words can be spelled. The one that had always got me was jjigae.
My husband usually orders gop dol bibimbap, the hot pot version with beef. The beef tastes like the marinated meat that we get when we order bulgogi. Rapture in a bowl. Or dolsot bibimbap.
I usually fly around the menu trying something new, but the last time we went out for Korean, I ordered the regular bibimbap. YUM! The crunchy lettuce hit the spot.
