Good take-out food near van Cortland Park (Bronx)
I was thinking of having a picnic in Van Cortland park and was wondering if there were any good take-out places nearby. Any suggestions on where to get good food in the area - any cuisine is fine with me.

Van Cortlandt is a big park -- more than 20 percent larger than Central Park, in fact. Where in the park do you plan to picnic?

If you're going to be near 242nd and Broadway- by the huge field- there are some options- though they might be a stop or 2 on the 1 train, or a 10-15 min walk. Also not sure what type of food you're looking for but here are some options. Cold Cut City on 231st and Godwin Terrace- a block west of Broadway- makes some serious sandwiches/heroes and has a variety of fresh prepared salads.
Another great option is Malecon on Bway just north of 231st St.- their rotisserie chicken is some of the best in the city. A couple of those for a group of people would do the job. Throw in some white rice, beans, and pastelitos. Finish it off with a fresh S&S cheesecake on 238th St. That's a party I'd want to be at.
I wouldn't recommend any of the spots by 242nd and Bway under the subway for takeout.

EatinginTranslation: My wife and I were thinking of going to the Concerts in the Park, which is held at ballfields near 251st and Broadway.

JGelfand: For that location, howfresheats has pegged the options well; the area around the 231st St. station offers the best and most convenient nearby options. (Liebman's Kosher Delicatessen, at 552 W. 235th, will take you off the main drag, but it's not out of reach.) I agree with howfresheats about the hardscrabble 242nd St.-area businesses, which aren't well-suited for supplying a picnic.

Liebman's is like eating rubber, Cold cut City is a mediocre at best, Garden Gourmet is a decent option.
