good eats near new york hospital (68th and york)

I thought of Pyramida at 78th and 1st for falafel and lemonade, and John's Pizza at 64th bet. york and first, but I am sure there are other places I'm forgetting about. Any other suggestions, serious eaters.

i used to live on 66 and york. Pio Pio was a favorite for Peruvian chicken..think it's on 89th?

Matsu sushi on 68th and 1st was also good for local sushi joint.

hey...
I work there! Are you going to be in the area???
@ravenouscouple, fyi, matsu is on 70th between York and 1st. (it's 2 doors down from my office) They have good lunch deals and their sushi is good. It gets pretty crowded around lunch time.
Patsy's on 69th and 2nd has pretty good pizza. I haven't had their other food, but my co-workers tell me they get food there for the Christmas party, and they vouch for it.

For dinner, Zucchero e Pomodori on 2nd between 74th and 75th is a nice place for Italian food. Dimly lit, not-too-hushed ambiance, and housemade pastas. Havent seen it during the daytime, though.

Also on 2nd, between 73rd and 74th, there is Spice, for okay Thai food. Again, it has lunch specials, so its a highlight for the office. Last time I was there, I could have sworn I heard some staff talking to each other in Cantonese.

As usual, a neighborhood fave is the street food: Lamb/Chicken over Rice or in a pita. There's a cart on york and 70th. I can see it from my office window. There is NEVER a line there. The cart on 69th (across from the street from the college entrance, its under the scaffolding right now) always has a long line (moves fast though) and I'm told its much better than the other one. I've only tried the latter, and I'm sticking to it.

Occasionally, on York there's a guy with a cart that makes fresh fruit smoothies. I haven't tried it, but heard its pretty good. Has all the fruits available for you to choose from.

I haven't tried too much in the area. From AHT, I did see a review for the burger at J.G. Melon. I have every intention of going there, but it looks like it might be a bit hard to go there and get back during a 1hour lunch break. So I'm saving it for a celebratory occasion.

I'm interested to see if anyone else gives you good suggestions. I've been looking around too.

Nanoosh (1st Ave. and 68th) is good for an inexpensive lunch or a snack.
For a more substantial meal, try Ravagh Persian Grill (also on 1st Ave. near 68th).

Hey! I live on 65th, between 1st and 2nd, so I definitely have some ideas for ya! Cafe Luka is a great family diner on 72nd and 1st -- the chicken souvlaki is my husband's go-to lazy meal. The best for outdoor dining is Mediterraneo on 66th and 2nd. It's a bit more expensive, but not ridiculous. I agree with salpico that Ravagh is a good option as well.

Tori Shin 1st Ave btwn 64th and 65th; very good and authentic yakitori (I love Yakitori Torys and Totto but gotta say this place seems the most authentic of the three; mostly Japanese clientele)

Cafe Mingala 2nd Ave btwn 72nd and 73rd; Burmese; love the keema, dumpling stews, coconut chicken noodle soup, Rangoon night market noodles, green papaya salad....

Bawarchi 1st Ave btwn 62nd and 63rd; pretty darned good Indian food (which I find rare here in Manhattan), good lunch buffet, great lamb dish with apricots

Pizza Park 1st Ave btwn 66th and 67th; there are other more well known pizza places in the nabe but this one is my fave, just a hole in the wall but a great classic NY slice (option of whole wheat crust!)

I second Pyramida and Zucchero e Pomodori. And the world opens up if you are willing to go into the hi 70s low 80s: Sushi of Gari, Bar Etats Unis, Spigolo, Beyoglu, Inase Sushi, B Cafe (great bar munchies and beer selection)

Can you tell this is my nabe!

Felice on 1st and 63rd is a good Italian wine bar with some nice cheeses and pastas - also it has outdoor eating. There is a small middle eastern grocer on 1st at 64th who sells lovely breads, cheeses and other gourmet stuff.

Svensaes, thanks for your listings. I've lived on 73rd and 2nd and have only been to a couple of the restaurants you mention because I like to cook at home. I'm a Yakitori Totto fan, so I have to go to Tori Shin.

Afghan Kebab House (which is BYOB) on 2nd ave. and 70th.

Caffe Follow Me on 62nd between Lexington and 3rd ave has a menu of crepes, paninis, and salads. They have a breakfast menu. They make the best espresso in the Upper East Side, and yes, I know about Via Quadronno's, St. Ambroeus and Caffe Sabarsky. Cozy and reasonable.

My favorite cheeseburger is from the Dallas BBQ on 3rd and 73rd. The fries are well cooked. I've been to JG Melon, and prefer the burger and atmosphere of Dallas BBQ. I also like their fried chicken wings. Everything else in the food menu is just OK.

Ah, my hood. I agree with the posts above on the following:
- Patsy's: They have a killer insalata siciliana (order without anchovies but with chicken. It's addictive.)
- Felice: Never been during the day, but great ambiance in the evening. Nice wine service and the specials are usually pretty good. If you like wine bars, I also recommend Accademia Di Vino on 64th & 3rd and Uva on 77th & 2nd.
- Cafe Luka: (It's on 71st, not 72nd) This is a good spot when you're hungover, wearing a sweat shirt and all you want are eggs to cure yourself. I'm a fan of their turkey sausage. It's has a nice snappy casing.
- Mediterraneo: Decent most of the time. I've had a few undercooked pasta dishes there when it was too busy. It's nicer when it's not overcrowded.

Other suggestions:
- Ko: my go to sushi spot on 70th & 2nd
- Beach Cafe: my spot to have a nicer brunch, also on 70th & 2nd. Plus, one of the waiters sort of reminds me of Mike Piazza. Bonus.

@engmcmuffin, JG Melon is decent but waaaaay too overcrowded all the time. People swear by their chili, though I don't eat red meat, so I stick with the chicken sandwiches.

Uskudar on 2nd at 73rd. Delicious Mom n' Pop Turkish, once I saw Ahmet Ertegun there (before he died, of course), if you need some proof of the restaurant's authentic cred...

Cafe Joul on First at 58th. They have an excellent "late bird special" - old school French with silent films...

Across the street (and on the south side of the bridge) is a cute new wine bar tucked in between the gyms and tile shops. Friendly, a nice addition to the 'hood.

I second Cafe Joul and Ko Sushi. The wine bar by the bridge is kind of pricey and I've never really enjoyed any of the wines I've had there, although it is a friendly place. There is also a Rosa Mexicana on 1st and 59th.

I'd like to add the Jamaican food truck on 71st street @ York Av. Lunch time only. I actually have only had their patties though, I think they are quite good.

If you walk north on York Avenue, there is a vegan cafe called The Green Bean Cafe, on York btwn 75th and 76th St. I am no vegan but their sandwiches and pastries are all very yummy.
