Cherry etiquette?

I'm loving fresh cherries right now and like to eat them as an afternoon snack. Trouble is, when I eat them at the office I feel very self-conscious. Spitting the pits into a paper towel just doesn't seem right with other people around. Any tips for eating cherries in public? Is there a protocol or should I just get over it already?

There's no elegant way of eating cherries so top caring what other people will think and enjoy your life.

That should have read 'stop' not 'top'.

I agree with SqueezeBottle just enjoy them.

Unless you want to remove the pits before going to work or don't mind swallowing :P, spitting is about as graceful as you're going to get.

There's no gracious way to eat cherries, so just do the best you can. There are some good cherry pitters out there and aren't very expensive, and they work really well on olives too.

Just do it. Ditto with sunflower seeds.

This is a funny topic, I put out a bowl of cherries when someone visited the other day, now there is napkins on my table where we were sitting and I figured if our guest ate a cherry or two he would have grabbed a napkin for the pits but with each one he ate he reached across the table and put it in my husbands ashtray. It kept him from smoking- Yippeeeeee

I'm not a fan of putting the whole cherry in my mouth and fishing out the pit anyway, so my typical method is to bite off half, grab the pit, eat the other half. This is slightly more graceful than it sounds.

I use a styrafoam coffee cup, i find it's a little less messy and unassuming sitting on my desk.

It's a little time consuming, but I cut mine in half, pop out the pit and pack them in a container along with a fork.

Does anyone remember that video on here about eating watermelon at business lunches?
I think the same principle can apply here if you are self conscious. Instead of spitting the pits into a cup/napkin/garbage can, it might be more discreet to catch them with your fist cupped up to your mouth. And then drop the pits into the garbage/cup/napkin.

I never spit. I take the pit out and put it in a paper towel.

Eating cherries at my desk as I type this - third day in a row (big bag, and they're GOOD!)

Never thought of technique, but find I hold it by the stem, nip it half before the pit, and eat the half while I look at the interior (which can be very gorgeous!) then eat the rest, nipping out the seed with my teeth and then spitting into palm and tossing in garbage.

Sorry if TMI! I have a private office, which helps.

@Anneesha: It's funny how eating certain things is different when you have a private office. When I take cherries or grapes to work, I spit the seed in my hand, place the seed on my container lid, then throw all the seeds away outside of my office. As much as I love food, I detest the lingering smell of food in my office, even fruits. It's from one too many times when housekeeping didn't empty out my rubbish for a week and thinking what if I had thrown food away?!

I use the cup method mentioned above and place a tissue over it in case someone comes by my desk.

Generally when I eat cherries I challenge myself to see just how far I can spit the pits. I guess it's a good thing I don't work in an office but rather on a farm where it is perfectly acceptable to spit things on the ground.

Come to think of it I'd probably do the same if I worked in an office, but don't worry, I'd aim for a trash can.

I spit into a cup. I prefer cherries to my coworkers.

LOL @ Karyn

Well said!

I take the pit out and put it in a cup/paper towel. I've seen my co-workers eat some nasty stuff/eat like animals (saucy chicken wings, ribs, etc) so I have no qualms about a nice little healthy snack :)
