balsamic advice
I want to send a nice bottle of balsamic vinegar to discerning friends. Any recommendations in the $50 range, give or take, and advice on where to purchase online?

Try one of these from Zingerman's, always a good bet.

Where are you located? There is a great shop in Chicago that has all sort of amazing balsamic vinegar (and olive oil). I bought some 18 year old vinegar there that is fabulous (almost as good as the stuff I brought home from Florence but not quite...)

Believe it or not, you can get some good stuff from Amazon.

At the risk of offending purists, I buy a lovely ersatz "fig balsamic" made by Napa Valley foods. It's not expensive and adds a nice touch to fruits and marinades. It's lovely on fresh peaches.

i second the "fig" balsamic.... i had it the other night on a beet salad and it was so good..... it's something a little different that people might not buy for themselves.... it's not cheap, either.

I'm a huge fan of Giuseppe Giusti Balsamic. It's about $55. You may be able to find one packaged in a wooden crate at Williams Sonoma, or you can order online.
It's perfectly sweet and tart and wonderfully thick - great for reductions!
