An old obsession finally bites the dust ..

Good morning foodie friends!

Something very strange happened to me the other morning, and I thought I’d share. My whole life I have been obsessed with cereal. I couldn’t get enough! The combo of cold refreshing milk with crunchy cereal is addicting.

I was having my morning bowl the other day and the truth gave me a dull, uninvited nudge … ah, this realization has been looming for months … and I have been ignoring it like a I just don’t enjoy cereal anymore. I realized eating it in the morning was becoming almost a chore. I love food; I don’t want any meal to feel like a chore. It’s just habit I guess, and denial.

(full story HERE)

its been happening a lot to me lately. I guess my tastes are just changing. Tons of stuff I loved as I kid I wont touch now, and tons of stuff I hated I am finding to be quite nice!

Anyways, I was just wondering if anyone else has had this experience. Realizing something you loved all your life, or as child just isn’t doing it for you anymore, or loving something that once produced a gag reflex upon sight.

Like most children, I used to hate all vegetables, and now I love them all.

For years and I mean seriously, I could not take the texture of yoghurt or pudding. I just couldn't, and now I can't get enough of them!

Finally, I used to love fried foods, like fried donuts (unlike my new baked donut maker), french fries, chicken tenders, et cetera. Now? I cannot even touch them! Their oiliness and ooziness...ugh! Even the smell is nauseating to me!

Tastes change and when your young you can spend time thinking about it.

@traveller

haha, yeah .. for me, i hated shrimp, tomatoes, and onions, now i LOVE them. Cant get enough!

veggies always sucked as a kid ... now my dinners are at least 50% veggies, and i am loving it!! (especially since the garden at my house is putting out more tomatoes, beans, peppers, and berries than i can handle!) there is always a huge bowl of veggies on the table for dinner ... mmmmm

same for me and fried food, i get sick if i try to eat that stuff now :/ Though, on my birthday, i still always go with my father to get fresh apple donuts from the orchards near our home :) i am so lucky i have a fall birthday!

I feel really almost guilty for saying this, but I really don't like chocolate that much anymore. I don't...sad but true...I don't even like the smell of it.

I do that with cereal a lot. I think because I love it and it's so convenient (I usually eat breakfast at my desk at work, and I eat cereal dry so it's ridiculously easy to store and prepare at the office). But every few weeks I just get tired of it.

There's other foods that I love and then overdo, but cereal is an extreme example, I think because sometimes I don't have the time or energy to do anything else for breakfast and don't get the break from it that I would with, say, a dinner food I got tired of.

I don't really like broccoli or ravioli anymore. I used to love them but now I don't really like them.

I used to eat oatmeal as a kid, or cream of wheat...now, ugh, I can't even get myself to swallow it. Also, I used to hate poached eggs as a kid, now I can't get enough, poached eggs and hash, eggs benedict, love them! I used to love yogurt, the tangy sourness has lost it for me. I can't even watch someone eat yogurt. :(

Used to really like pasta ~ any kind ~ and now I'm very meh about it. Can't seem to work up any enthusiasm for it.

I used to really, really like mayonnaise and now I still eat it, but just not so much. I think my taste for very rich foods has just waned. I often will just crave fish, seafood, grilled steak or baked/broiled chicken, salads and veggies that can be eaten very simply prepared.

I used to eat oatmeal for breakfast almost every morning. Now it gives me stomach aches. Even the steel cut oats which I just discovered a couple of years ago. I don't know what it is but now I can only eat my oats in cookie form, I know I feel bad for me too! ha ha.

I cannot eat any canned or bottled soup, gravy, or pasta sauce any more. They're all way too salty/chemical/metallic or something for me.

I wouldn't touch turkey dressing ever when I was young--when my Filipina mother made it, it was mostly a wet grey blob with a few khaki streaks in it. Yuck. The Thanksgiving I turned 17, our next-door-neighbor sent over some cornbread stuffing for us to try. It looked good, smelled good and tasted great and I've loved stuffing ever since.

From the day he started crawling, my oldest son would not eat pudding, mashed potatoes or lasagna/manicotti/ravioli. At 38, he still won't, but he's never had a problem eating such things as calamari and sushi and kale.

When he was younger, my third son always requested canned peas with his birthday dinner but would never eat beans. Now he's the other way around-- won't touch peas unless they're fresh or frozen and he makes a mean all-bean chili.

I'm with betteirene on the canned/bottled soup, gravy, pasta sauce, and I'll add salad dressing to that list - it all tastes artificial, sweet and salty to me now, even though I grew up on the stuff.

Also, I thought I was allergic to cranberries for DECADES - found out that I'm not, and have decades of tart-sweet to catch up on.

I don't eat cookies, cakes, ice cream, or pastries in general anymore. As a kid I could eat a half gallon bucket of mint chocolate chip.

I seemed to lose the desire for the sweets around the same time I started enjoying things like beer, grilled onion, and shrimp.

I'm still working on things like clams and squid, I want to eat them because I see them everywhere and they look delicious, but every time I try them I'm dissapointed that they dont taste amazing to me.

@ annie and @ducan

i also have lost the taste for chocolate .. i feel like i should be shunned for saying that or something, but its true haha .. i just dont ever crave it!

duncan, i also used to LOVE pasta and bread ... man all i ate was bread. now i am not very fond of it...well, i am indifferent to it. if i do have pasta, it has to be a 3:1 ratio of sauce and veggies to noodles haha. its tasteless on its own, and too heavy !

(with the exception of asiago cheese cracked pepper bread, and fig - honey - anise bread ... i dont get those very often, but when i do, i am lucky if there is any of the loaf left at the end of the day haha)

@aye - i dont crave much in the way of sweets either (only fruits - for some reason i am always craving apples). man i used to put away so much junk as a kid, i could go to my fort with a friend and put away half a bag of cheetos ! HAHA ... wouldnt dare touch that junk now!

i am with you on the clams and stuff, they always look SO tasty .. but i just cant get used to them yet

it took me a while to love sushi, but now that i do, its one of my favorite things!

i also used to not go anywhere near beans, now i enjoy them in chilis and soups and in tacos :)

fast food I have somewhat out grown.

Tastes definitely change. When I was a kid I couldn't stomach broccoli, cauliflower, anything pickled, or scallops. Needless to say I eat all of these foods now. When I was a kid I craved sugar coated sugar. Not a chance now. I don't crave doughnuts or anything really sugary. I do like sweets like tiramisu or cannoli, or even something with powdered sugar on it - but it can't be so overtly sweet as to make me want to peel my tongue out of my mouth. I ate that sort of stuff when I was a kid.

The difference between you and me is that I still love cereal - the brands have changed and evolved. I still love incredibly crunchy cereal. Cap'n Crunch has been replaced by Kashi Go Lean Crunch. SO LOUD you can't hear someone talking at the same table. Same crunch - less sweet.

You may have just "played it out." Take a break and see if you don't crave cereal again.

Dude...the last time i had a revelation like that i was trippin my ass off on some good LSD !!!

i just realized in the middle of my post, i started a sentence and didnt finish it ... haha

no more posting so early in the morning for me

I used to love shrimp and fear mussels, now I love mussels and fear shrimp.

I was obsessed with cereal growing up, then after college I took about a 8 year break. I love it again now, but not in the same way.

I used to be obsessed with packaged sweets, like swiss cake rolls. Blergh. Can't even think about eating something like that now. I think I liked them so much because they rarely made an appearance in our house when I was growing up. They seemed like a special treat. If I want a treat these days, I'd much rather have something home made.
