I've checked it out. A lot of the ideas are pretty simple. But i think its cool!
Here's a link for anyone who is interested.

Oy, thanks for putting in the link, engmcmuffin! It looked like the html worked in the preview box, but I guess not. Sigh...

Some of the salads sound pretty random to me. For example, shredded carrots, blueberries and sunflower seeds??? OK... Then I guess whatever three things I can think of, there's a salad.
But the article reminded me that I have all the ingredients for my mom's awesome black bean salad which I'm going to make when I get home tonight. Now, there's a salad.

I really just don't like Mark Bittman and don't understand what's so great about him. Most of his salads were random concoctions that I didn't think were worthy of a 1 and 1/2 page spread in the NYT. I'd prefer to see actual recipes with an interesting article. I think of this stuff as mostly just summer fluff that the paper puts in because all the writers are on vacation.
His writing and his recipes really just don't do it for me, at all.

oh, and my favorite summer salad is as follows:
peanut butter/sesame dressing with plenty of fresh ginger
cold soba noodles
carrots thrown into boiling water for 5 minutes, then julienned
corn boiled for 3 minutes, then cut from the cob
sugar snap peas, sliced
cilantro, mint
mix everything together = YUM
but really any assortment of whatever is fresh and in season makes a good salad - no recipes needed.

I think there was a little bit of a stretch to reach 101...perhaps finding the 25 best would have been advisable.
@Trilby...care to share the recipe, or is it a locked-drawer type?

I like it; the majority of the recipes have some element that isn't obvious, so it gave me some ideas. I do think it would have been better as "101 Salad Ingredients and How to Use Them", more like the Flavor Bible.
I don't really have a favorite salad, but here's something recent that turned out pretty well:
--baby spinach
--lots of mint
--roasted pecans
--rhubarb slices (soaked in balsamic vinegar and splendo to sweeten)
--bits of kinda runny goat cheese
--salt, pepper, balsamic, & oil
Pretty standard but way good.

I saw that and I will be making something!! Love that guy. So many salads I would like to try now...Can't wait. :) Matter of fact, I may be making something tonight.
I should be honest...I will wind up making more than one thing. ;-)

Mom's Black Bean Salad
1 lg. can (or 2 small) black beans, rinsed
3-4 cups frozen corn kernels, cooked (of course you could use fresh)
1 green pepper, diced
1 red pepper, diced
1 lg. red onion, cut up however you like
small bunch of parsley, snipped
Dressing:
3/4 c. olive oil
1/3 c. red wine vinegar (must be red wine!)
3 T lime juice
red pepper flakes
1 T. dry mustard
2 T. cumin
sugar, to taste
Emulsify dressing, pour over veggies and toss. YUM!
Sometimes I add a chopped up cucumber to make it a little lighter. Sometimes I add cold leftover brown rice to make it heartier.

OK, I lied. You can use cider vinegar. Just made some and it's so good.

I thought it was an interesting read.
I think my favorite was 49. Toss greens with walnuts, blue cheese and raspberries; drizzle with a simple vinaigrette. Sell for $14 a serving.

thanks!

Aw, I like Bittman. I'm not a gushing fangirl or anything, but I like how he sort of knocks the stuffing out of pompous chefs and their dishes.
Also, we just happen to share the same outlook on food (Martha Stewart: "WHAT! Soy sauce with butter as a sauce for steak!" Bittman: "What? It tastes good.")

I love watermelon, red onion, and feta with a light vinaigrette. Grilling the watermelon in big slices first creates a great visual too.
Also a great basil-loaded panzanella.
And finally, snickers salad, which is nothing more than snickers, tart apples, and cool whip.
shoneyjoe at 1:26PM on 07/23/09
@shoney, my fave salad this summer has been the watermelon, feta & arugula salad with balsamic vinegar. Something about the combo of salty feta and sweet watermelon is simply divine! My husband's going to divorce me if I make it one more time for dinner.
Gosh I'm gonna miss him.
juliebugsmama at 1:29PM on 07/23/09
@ julie...hahaha...
my two faves...
grilled steak, baby greens, bleu cheese, croutons, and toasted almonds
and...
spinach, strawberries, red onion, goat cheese, and toasted almonds
MMM.
