Your fave cheeseball recipe

I'm going to a cheeseball party on Friday night and really need to impress my friends with a creative cheeseball. Any ideas? Sweet or savory, or both. Rolled in something, or not. Let's see what you can do, SEers!!

21 Comments:

a super duper easy cheese ball recipe uses plain ol' taco mix, cream cheese, and crushed tortilla chips:

2 blocks cream cheese, softened to room temp
1 packet taco seasoning
1 cup crushed tortilla chips

mix the cream cheese and taco seasoning very very well. refrigerate for one hour, then form into a ball. roll the ball in the crushed tortilla chips (also helps hide any imperfections from rolling...). serve with un-crushed tortilla chips! easy peasy!

Chocolate Chip Cheese Ball

"A sweet switch from the usual cheese ball. Serve with graham crackers or chocolate wafers."

1 (8 ounce) package cream cheese, softened
1/2 cup butter, softened
3/4 cup confectioners' sugar
2 tablespoons brown sugar
1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
3/4 cup miniature semisweet chocolate chips
3/4 cup finely chopped pecans

In a medium bowl, beat together cream cheese and butter until smooth. Mix in confectioners' sugar, brown sugar and vanilla. Stir in chocolate chips. Cover, and chill in the refrigerator for 2 hours.
Shape chilled cream cheese mixture into a ball. Wrap with plastic, and chill in the refrigerator for 1 hour.
Roll the cheese ball in finely chopped pecans before serving.

Make a savory cheesecake (mini). Virually the same ingredients with the addition of egg, cream, and a little oven time. Serve room temp with apples and crackers....quaranteed winner! Try cheddar with bacon and horseradish, or bluecheesecake, or, my last one was Ham and Cheesecake: Swiss cheese, minced ham in the middle with a dab of mustard....looked really pretty when sliced.

peanut butter cheese ball (sounds weird, but really good)

First off, a cheeseball party sounds like my idea of heaven!

Have you tried making the goat cheese lollipops from The Kitchn? Nothing says class like individual cheeseballs on sticks. With bacon. Mmmm.

If you want to do a full-size ball, Stilton with cream cheese and port rolled in crushed pecans is delicious.

But I'd make the pops, personally.

Oh my! It's a Cheeseball Potluck Party! LOL

I love the sweet Cheeseball ideas! My mom makes a pretty basic savory one with cream cheese, a little sour cream, chopped pepperoni (or some such pork product!), shredded cheese (any kind really) and scallions. GOT TO HAVE THE SCALLIONS. Simple but good.

i bet you could turn the famous jalapeno popper dip into a cheeseball...
less mayo, more cream cheese... just don't heat it up & roll the whole thing in the buttered, toasted panko breadcrumbs

My go-to cheeseballs are:

Goat cheese whipped with a little mascarpone or cream cheese and a few splashes of cream, then chunks of a tangy bleu-type cheese folded in along with fresh herbs like thyme and chives or sage. Mold and chill.
Then roll in crushed toasted almonds or pecans OR paprika OR finely chopped herbs. A drizzle of reduced red wine syrup in or on it is very good.

For a sweet, I like a mild soft goat cheese with lots of mascarpone and some sugar. Swirl a salted caramel through it, mold and chill. Roll in shaved chocolate, cocoa powder or toasted nuts and serve with fruit and sweet crackers, like homemade grahams or even tortillas baked to a crisp with cinnamon and sugar-or whatever you like.

Sounds like a fun party!!

Here's two of my favorites (from Homesick Texan's blog) (Actually, I love everything on her blog)

Jean's cheese ball (by way of Aunt Betty)
Ingredients:
2 cups of sharp cheddar cheese
1 cup chopped or ground walnuts
8 oz. package of cream cheese
1/4 tsp garlic powder or one clove of garlic, minced
1 tbsp Worchester Sauce
2 tbsp minced onions
1 tbsp chili powder [or mixture with paprika]

Method:
Form in ball and roll in chili powder (or paprika).
Serve with crackers

Roquefort cheese roll (from my grandparents’ former next-door neighbor Norma Gaydos)
Ingredients:
8 oz. package of cream cheese
3 oz of Roquefort cheese (or any other soft and creamy blue cheese)
2 tablespoons of Worcestershire sauce
1 clove of garlic, minced
1 cup of crushed pecans

Method:
Beat together and roll in long tube shape.
Roll in crushed pecans.
Serve with crackers

this recipe was highlighted on serious eats about 18 months ago and i've made it quite a few times since then:

yum!

i've even put the cheese mixture into a serving dish and sprinkled the bacon on top (instead of making a ball).

Cheeseball party? That's a new one to me, I'd bring plenty of cold beer:-)

Pineapple Curry Cheeseball
8 oz. cream cheese
1/4 c. chutney, finely chopped
1/4 teas. curry powder
1 fresh pineapple halved and hollowed out
toasted almonds
assorted crackers, endive leaves

Mix first 3 ingredients, chill for at least 4 hours. You can either shape into ball and roll in almonds or mound in pineapple, sprinked with the nuts. Serve with an assorment of crackers and endive leaves.

I must agree with caramel - i got that recipe from my MIL and it is always a hit!!! It's good with graham crackers, but also great use for small/durable chocolate chip cookies, oreos, fruit slices, etc. I once served it with teddy grahams and my cousins' kids pretty much licked the bowl.

these are all amazing!! i'm really having trouble deciding. the hostess's signature cheeseball is cream cheese, chopped corn beef, pickles, and garlic salt, so I'm wondering if I should go with an american classic or something more sophisicated. I might just wait until tomorrow night to decide.

Mango chutney tortes are amazing, basically a combo of cream cheese, cottage cheese made smooth in a food processor or with an immersion blender, curry powder, mango chutney, green onions and nuts (optional--some people use golden raisins, too). Anyway, you could certainly just use cream cheese, a little cream or something to loosen it up, curry powder and mango chutney, then roll in green onions and nuts. It is SO good.

I take this one to the hospital (I work there) everytime we have a potluck of late night snacks. There is never any left.

Friona Cheeseball

2-8oz pkg cream cheese
1 envelope dry Ranch dressing mix
1 cup chopped chicken (canned white meat is good)
Toasted Chopped Pecans
Dry Parsley

Mix cream cheese, Ranch dressing mix and chicken. Place in plastic wrap and chill until moldable. Roll into a ball or flattened disc, then cover completely with an equal mixture of pecans and parsley. Serve with toasted baguette rounds.

@ raspberryberet, that sounds absolutely delicious. I don't have a cheeseball party to go to, but I don't care, I'm going to make it anyway!

This one is quite different and really, really good!

2 8oz. pkgs. cream cheese (softened)
1 reg. pkg. Hidden Valley Ranch salad dressing mix.
2 dashes of Tabasco sauce
cracked black pepper

Mix all ingredients except black pepper in a food processor.
Turn mixture out onto waxed paper and mold it into a ball shape.
Roll in cracked black pepper.
Wrap cheese ball in plastic wrap and refrigerate overnight.
Serve with assorted crackers.

I don't have the recipe handy, but we make one with cream cheese plus chopped pineapple, green bell pepper, onion, and pecans.

@andshewas...I like the way you think...that popper dip recipe would make a great cheeseball!

This salmon cheese ball recipe ought to be different!

Ingredients

1-lb. can of salmon
8-oz. cream cheese
1 Tbs. lemon juice
2 tsp. grated onion
1 tsp. horseradish
1/4 tsp. salt
1/2 C. crushed pecans
3 Tbs. minced parsley

Directions

Strain and flake salmon, removing any of the larger bones. Combine with the cream cheese, juice, onion, horseradish, and salt. Chill. Shape into ball. Combine the parsley and the pecans on a pie plate or shallow bowl. Roll the cheese ball in the mixture so it presses into the surface. Serve or wrap in plastic wrap and chill again till ready to use.
