Wine, cider and beer brewing supplies

Can anyone recommend a vendor? There seem to be tons of merchants online, I don't know where to start. Ideally I would buy from a brick and mortar store in NYC, I like to support local businesses even if it costs a wee bit more, but there don't seem to be any near me... Unless you know of one?

So, I turn to the internets. Any suggestions? I'm looking for the basic get-started stuff, a couple carboys, an airlock, racking siphon, yeast.... What else would I need?

Thanks!

I've used homebrew.com and morebeer.com both were fine although I have not brewed for several years.

cool, thanks, I'll check them out.

My husband has ordered from Northern Brewer and they have a large selection. If you want a brick and morter store, there is one in Northport on Long Island. Worth the trip if you have a car/zipcar, it's about a 60-90 minute (depending on traffic) drive from the city.

William's Brewing is very reliable and has a substantial inventory. You need it, they have it.

They sell two types of home-brewery kits: Basic and Complete. The Basic version contains the essentials; you need to have a kettle to serve as your brew pot (3-5 gallon capacity.) The Complete includes a brew pot plus some other accessories that will make brewing easier (like a wort chiller.)

Awesome, thank you all! Browsing the various sites, I was a bit overwhelmed with all the various stuff to choose from. Good to see there are some basic kits that have all you need to get started.

I usually order from Strange Brew (www.home-brew.com). They have a good selection and will only charge actual shipping costs. That's nice, especially if you're buying a lot or large items and live on the east coast (they're in MA). They also have some nice getting-started kits and really great customer service in my experience.

I've used Midwest in the past (http://www.midwestsupplies.com/). If you don't mind a bit of a ride, there's The Brewer's Apprentice (http://www.brewapp.com/) down in Freehold NJ. And there's a shop up near West Point some place...

Another good one is http://www.homebrewheaven.com. Despite a vintage 1994 or so website design, I've had good results with several of their kits. I also purchased my start up supplies from them.

A great brick-and-mortar shop is Party Creations in Red Hook, New York (not the one in Brooklyn.) Their website is http://www.partycreations.net/.
They accept orders by e-mail, but I recommend calling. The owners seem to have tried more recipes than anyone else I've come across and are happy to give advice.

I'll second the William's note above - beyond excellent and terrific service. They're the only ones I use.
