Where to eat in Western NC?
Hello all!!
My family is heading out of NJ at the end of the month, destination: Asheville, NC. We’re doing a straight shot down I 81 stopping overnight in Roanoke, VA., where I already have my sights set on a burger called the Cheesy Western at Texas Tavern (anyone had one of these?). Other than that, no other eating plans for the week. Does anybody have an old stand-by or off-the-beaten-path gem to suggest for a trip to Western North Carolina? Thanks!

Haven't been there in years but enjoyed reading about the area on http://www. culinarysherpas.com. The May 18 post "From Tampa to Ashville with love was very informative. There is also an earlier post about the area. Hope this helps. Beautiful area--lucky you!

If they're still open, Stoney Knob Cafe is excellent. There's a restaurant just outside the gate of the Farmer's Market that has great county food. The Mellow Mushroom is by far my favorite odd-ball pizza place. Their hummus is the best.

I LOVE the Daniel Boone Inn in Boone, NC (near Appalachian State University). Everything is served family style and you are served a southern set meal of three meats, five veg, soup or salad and dessert. I can say from experience that the chicken is good, but the highlight is the country ham biscuits. Last time I was there, it was all you can eat on everything . . . except the ham biscuits. Luckily, one of my friends does not eat ham, so I got two! Enjoy!

The Laughing Seed in Asheville has good red pepper hummus. It's (the restaurant) veggie and fairly earthy. The Early Girl Eatery in Asheville (both downtown, not far from each other) has good breakfasts. I haven't been ther in a couple of years. Check with Chowhound.com or Google for opinions. Asheville, and Western NC is so beautiful but the memorable food experiences favor those who like fried.

i was born and raised in asheville. the above suggestions are not good, nor authentically asheville and some (mellow mushroom, early girl) are downright tourist traps. but go there, eat at those restaurants but please dont tell your friends how amazing and majestic asheville is, its already overrun by out of towners to the point of nausea.

My niece lives in Asheville and loves it! She recommends Corner Kitchen for breakfast and I loved Tupelo Honey.
