When it's hot. . .

What kinds of savory food do you eat when it's really hot outside?

22 Comments:

Cucumbers with salt, pickles, cucumber and tomato salad with dill, feta and onion, potato salad with fresh peas (light on the potatoes and mayo--heavy on the peas), grilled veggies such as zucchini, summer squash, onions and peppers at room temp. with a drizzle of vinaigrette and any fresh crunchy green salad. And a sprinkling of whatever fresh herb I'm in the mood for on all of the above. So I guess I'm heavy on the veggies and light on everything else when its really hot (90+) around here.

I snack on a lot more fruit, but that's probably because it's available when it's warm. Right now I've got a bowl of cherries that keeps shrinking every time I walk past it.

Oddly, I seem to eat oatmeal for breakfast in the summer. I know it doesn't make sense. But it just seems to work out that way.

Does ice cream count? Most of the summer, there are 2-3 flavors of homemade ice cream on hand.

fruits, sorbets, cucumbers, tomatoes, potato salad - nothing reminds me of summer more than potato salad at bbqs!. Oh also love avocados. Basically anything that is in season. And mangoes...

Cold tofu with soy sauce and scallions too!

I just bought a couple tubs of Korean pickles (daikon and cucumber) from a local grocer. I've been eating them as snacks and lunch items over the last week or so. Best under $10 purchase ever!

I still eat what I crave all through out the year just less then in the colder weather.

I go back to my midwest American roots, and like to put out a big tray of cold meats and cheese, with fresh lettuce, sliced tomato, pickles, cucumber and avocado when we have guests over. Combine that with some fresh bread and an assortment of spreads, and a few bags of crisps.

It's also the perfect time for 'build-your-own taco' night...just some beef or seafood, and leave the shells or wraps with everything else on the table; some salsa fresca, sour cream, shredded lettuce, hot sauce, grated cheese. Make guacamole and have a bowl of tortilla chips at the ready. Goes great with cold beer or margaritas.

We don't have A/C, so I try and heat up the house as little as possible. The boy and I are working on building a brick barbecue, but it's slow going. Once it's finished, though, I might as well unplug the cooker.

I've been loving Ina Garten's roasted/grilled shrimp salad and Tabouleh pita pockets, as well as grilled chicken or pork tenderloins in flat bread with onions, tomato and lots of Tzaziki sauce. I love clean, bright flavors during the summer, and these sorts of things seem to really satisfy that.

Also, I love doing homemade guacamole and making a big pitcher of margaritas or red sangria. Valencia oranges are perfect this time of year, and I squeeze a bunch to add to my sangria. Perfect accompaniment to the guac. Yum!

Salad - and tons of it. Greek salad is a fav at the moment...I suppose it's because tomatoes, cucumbers, and onions are so good right now. And it's light & healthy, but still really flavorful at the same time. Chicken salad, cold noodle salad (could be of the Italian or Asian type), Mexican corn & bean salad, and green salads with fresh fruit on top all make appearances too. Last night I basically picked at a variety of things I had in my fridge - cold rotisserie chicken, cheese, crackers with a couple different kinds of dip, some fruit... I do that a lot when it's hot outside and I can't imagine cooking or eating a large, heavy meal. Oh, and smoothies are now my go-to lunch or snack when nothing else sounds good.

Lots of hummus, raw vegetables, and tabouleh.

Cold Japanese noodles. Zaru soba or udon, hiyashi chuka soba or somen... and always with an ice cube in the broth.

I crave soups, stews, spicy food, as well as salads and ice cream all year, and eat them with the same frequency, whether it's 20 below or 90. Spicy foods are made to be eaten in searing hot weather.

Mool naeng myun (Korean buckwheat noodles in a cold beef broth with veggies and slices of Asian pear) - sooo good on a hot day!

as I commented on a recent thread, ditto on cold noodles.
I just bought a bunch of somen and soba for the summer, but should've bought naengmyun too. Love them all :-)

and when I don't even want to boil water for noodles, I make some sort of rice dish in a rice cooker.

Cold fruit soups, preferably with berries.

When it's hot, I have lots of raw vegetables (chiogga beets with lemon juice and mint, carrot salad/dressing) and of course, I'll use any excuse to make sorbet (mmm mango).

Anything that can be grilled... which is basically anything. I particularly crave spicy food, like meat with a spicy rub, to be accompanied by a cold salad. Lots and lots of asian style slaw (rice wine vinegar, lime juice, ginger, garlic, scallions, fish sauce over shredded cabbage, snow peas, bean sprouts, etc.
Of course, to be followed by ice cream@!

Lots of fruit, grilled food (anything that can be grilled), flavored teas, vegetarian pastas.

Fresh fresh melon with proscuito, stone fruits (peaches, plums), anything you can cook on a grill and anything from the ocean. Pies and icebox cake. Simple food, nothing fussy or long cooked (except maybe ribs and BBQ)

mostly beer.... although a gin and tonic is not out of the question. The eating part?! Oh, well there is a lime in a G & T plus it's good for fending off scurvy! As for beer I just count on the carbs to be life sustaining.

@dhorst - Cucumber addict here too:
I slice them and top them with this Bad Reichenhaller Kräuter Salz mit Folsäure; it's really just a seasoning salt I think with various herbage; it's super versatile for all salads too. It just has to be refrigerated after it's been opened (for some reason);

100-cheers for ICE COLD beer! There's really nothing I crave MORE when it's hot out.

I eat raw veggies all the time all-year round but I get an extra-hinkling (sp?) for them in our very very very short summer.

This year I've found it EXTREMELY strange that I've been craving soda-fizziness... I usually avoid all sodas alltogether. At first I thought I was pregnant or something! It must be the weather...

all of these posts provide awesome ideas!!! thank you!

Tacos are always good, especially when they're really spicy (helps you sweat, which helps cool you off).
