What's not-to-miss in Italy?

We're going on our honeymoon to Italy! A few nights in Rome, then a week or so in Tuscany, then a few more nights in Venice. Anybody have recommendations? Restaurants, vineyards, agritourism farmstays? Many thanks!

My favorite objects in Rome are the four Bernini sculputures at the Borghese Galleries, especially the "Pluto and Persephone" and "Appolo and Daphne". You need to reserve a visiting time in advance via their website, or you can ask the concierge to see if they can squeeze you in.

My favorite Roman restaurant is Mario on Via della vite. Great tiramisu, great bistecca fiorentina, grilled scampi, ribollita, etc.. They made the best rissotto I ever had, which was gorgonzola and red cabbage. Ive tried to replicate it at home without success. In my last visit to Rome, I think my family and I ate there four times.

For gelato, I prefer Giolitti, especially for the fig gelato. Not a fan of San Crispino's.

The food I had in Venice was certainly good, but none of the restaurants I went to were "must go again." I prefer Central and Southern Italian cuisine, so I'm biased there. However, I had excellent good gelato at Nico by the Zattere vaporetto stop.

Well, it's not Italian food (it's French), but it is very good and quite an experience --L'Eau Vive, Via Monterone 85 (between the Pantheon and Piazza Navona),Tel: 06 688 02101 -- it's run by Carmelite nuns, and they all stop and sing Ave Maria at around 10pm -- even if you're not Catholic, it's quite an experience, and the food is very good.

Nothing to add - we grazed through Italy on a very limited budget, but let me tell you, first, congratulations on your wedding, and two, you will just LOVE Italy. Everything about that place is wonderful - a little tip - there aren't a lot of breakfast places - little stands with coffee and pastries usually - but - if there are a few table/chairs, remember that sitting down practically triples what you pay! Regardless, enjoy it all - in Venice there are bargains to be had - Murano glass is cheaper at the mainland stores and don't be talked into buying handbags on the Rialto bridge - you'll be ripped off. I wish I could come!

I just got back from the same trip! Not a honeymoon, but a trip to Rome, Florence and Venice! In Florence we ate at two great restaurants, one is La Giostra (the owner is a really animated guy and they give you an amazing sampler as soon as you sit down!), and Frescobaldi (they make their own wine, olive oil and an amazing semifreddo for dessert!).

In Rome the best restaurant we ate at was Trattoria Tritone which is near the Trevi Fountrain (which you should definitely see at night!)

If you stumble through San Gimignano, they have the best gelato there at Pluripremiata Gelateria. It is clearly touristy and they claim to be the "Gelato World Champions", but it really was the best/most reasonably priced we had on the trip! 3 small gelato for 5 euro.

The two best caprese salads of the trip were in Venice. Don't even remember the names of the small places we had them, but it seems they make them well regardless of where you eat!

Have an amazing time- its a truly magical place!

In Rome, you must head to the Campo D'Fiori market in the morning/early afternoon. Pick up some fresh fruits, veggies, meats, and cheese. And then head to the Campo Fiori bakery right on the perimeter of the market. It's easy to spot because it simply says in huge letters on the bldg, "Campo Fiori". Have the focaccia bread, either plain or with the toppings they have at the time. This was simply the best bread I've ever eaten. It was reviewed on this site so check it out! Much better than any pizza I've ever eaten.

Also, head to Cafe St. Eustachio near the Pantheon for a wonderful espresso and/or cappacino. Try the Gran Cafe version. You won't have anything better.

Thanks everyone! This is great. Keep them coming!

If you have the chance while in Rome, spend some time in the Monteverde Vecchio neighborhood, across the river from the ancient city and the city center. It's the home of the largest public park in Italy, which is huge, beautiful, and in the evenings, full of strolling families. Lots of great little cafés (aka "bars") and not far away from the hip Trastevere district, which has great food and shops. And I might be prejudiced, having studied there as a classics student in college, but I think the Forum is one of the most amazing places in the world. Rome is such a wonderful city.

I would advise you to obtain Rick Steve's guide to each of these cities- he has impeccable restaurant recommendations.

I would fly to Rome just to have gelato at Giolitti's. And it's a very good idea to have gelato every day.

Haven't been to Rome but the melon gelato in Venice was so good and I usually only eat chocolate!

I second having gelato every day, especially since you are going during the summer when it's wickedly hot outside and not a lot of places in Rome have air conditioning.

My recs would be Al 34 and Soralella both in Rome. But really it's hard to have a bad meal in Italy.

In florence,

Il Porcuspino (the porcupine) is delicious. We had an amazingly fun time with the waiters, and had the best bread and white bean soup i have ever had.

Also I would recommend the city of Florence in general. You cannot beat the art in this city. Fiesole is a small town up in the hills just outside of Florence, it is gorgeous and I they have this outdoor theater where they do opera and orchestra in the summer.

I am very jealous. Hope you have fun!
